I don't know much about sign language, but it seems that her translator also deserves a huge round of applause. He is a mental athlete! She was talking so fast and he could not only translate, but also convey her humor and emotions so well, he makes it look so easy !

Jack is extraordinary and they’ve been working together since Children of a Lesser God came out, and he is also her producing partner, so he understands how she communicates and has been vital to her work.

I'm glad they set up the interview this way. I used to get so irritated when the interviewer would ask Marlee a question and then look at the interpreter as they answered. I was like "Why aren't you looking at Marlee? She's the one talking!" This was the way it should be, Stephen focusing on her.

And they kept the camera on her for the whole answer. People who sign got the full answer. Shows often cut away from a deaf speaker, and I've read that it's like when hearing people listen to a staticy radio.

Overly burdened with students, the continued proposal is to closed both and mainstream students. How many potential teachers go to colleges offering specialized training like that? How many classrooms spread the teacher "too thin"? There's more and more handicapped students, not less and less. Throw behaviorally handicapped students into the mix-someone will be shortchanged.

Marlee inspired me to learn ASL in my 20's. I was the only florist who knew basic signs and I was also commended by clients because I would take time with my hearing impaired/deaf clients to make sure they were fully heard about their wishes for their weddings/events. Thanks Marlee

I love the way they did the interpreting on this, really allows focus on her. I'm so used to seeing sign interpreters interpreting other people's words, so nice to see this reversed. I don't understand ASL, only a bit of Auslan, but it was really easy to follow exactly what she was signing with the way this was interpreted & I noticed for the first time there are a few cross over words between Auslan & ASL, "interpreter" in particular I noticed is identical. A few signs the same but with completely different meanings in the 2 languages too

His name is Jack Jason. He's been with Marlee since the beginning of her career, and he's also her producing partner. He's not her only interpreter though. He handles public/Hollywood/business stuff with her. But for family/personal stuff (PTA meetings, doctors appointments, etc), she has a female interpreter. But yeah, Jack's amazing!

I knew Marlee since the day I was on the set at Children of a Lesser God (as an extra actor). Just recently, even though I already knew that she was very kind to everyone including myself---but just recently I was floored to hear that Marlee once told the interviewer that she was not interested in gossip about how great the kiss was when she got it from co-star in Mark Harmon during the filming. She even said this to the interviewer "I'm being paid to kiss." Nothing more. Plus Marlee told the interviewer that she felt so sorry for the interviewer's husband for gossip stuff. Now, Marlee has my big-time respect from that day.

An old friend of mine was deaf and he felt extremely isolated since even his family didn't bother to learn sign language, even just fingerspelling. Wow, that was just incredible to watch. I don't know what I liked the most... She's just so expressive - even though I had to rely on the interpreter to fully understand it, her own gestures and faces made her speech so alive. Many many (MANY! lol) hearing people call what Jack was doing "translating". So, no worries. Translating actually means taking something written in one language and "translating" to a different written language. What Jack is doing is called Interpreting. It is literally the most difficult kind of Interpreting. He is seeing ASL (which is a completely different language than English) and interpreting it to spoken English. Simultaneously! It's hard enough to do that with two different spoken languages, ex Spanish to English. But, to do that with a visual language to a spoken language... well, some Neurolinguistic researchers have called it "impossible". Theoretically, of course. But, it happens and it's amazing. I've done it myself for the last 40 years. It's thrilling on so many levels.

As a disabled person, I have so much love and appreciation for actors with various disabilities. It is far too often that characters are written to be disabled and then an able-bodied actor “plays” disabled. I hope with this kind of representation that will become a thing of the past because truly the industry is missing out on so many talented people by overlooking them for their disability.

To those questioning her use of a male "voice"... and not to be such a geek but, I am always reminded of the Star Trek: TNG episode "Loud As A Whisper". That same person has been her "voice" for a very long time. He is only as good as she has made him. Listen to HER and not the voice that she is using to help YOU understand her.

Apparently it also helps people keep their attention on the subject, not the interpreter (that's the thought anyway). If it was a woman, you might start associating some of the speech to that interpreter in a weird way. With an opposite gendered voice, the contrast is night and day.

Yes, he HAS interpreted for her for a very long time. Her entire career.She chose someone she felt was skilled enough to work with her and she had rapport with, whether that person was male or female. (It's still most common to have same gender Interpreters for Voice Overs, public presentations, etc) And, we Interpreters owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Deaf community. But, with due respect, He WAS and IS an extremely skilled Interpreter and HAD been when he started working with Marlee. Or she never would've chosen him. These days he only interprets for her; he's now involved in other aspects of the film industry. As a producer, etc. But, I'm not sure you're aware that you insult him, and all Interpreters, to say he's only that skilled because of working with her.

It's most often same gendered Interpreters working with Deaf people doing interviews, "Voice Overs" (Sign Overs? lol) etc. The goal is to match the voice with the person as best as possible to reduce distraction. Same as dubbed movies. You won't hear a female voice over a male actor in any foreign film.

I will watch the movie as soon as I can, because it sounds wonderful! But I think it is a kind of remake/inspired by the french film "La famille Bélier", which is also about a deaf family, kind of relying on their hearing daughter, who wants to follow her passion of singing. A very emotional, beautiful film that moved me to tears. I am sure CODA will be great though, I am looking forward to watching it :)

“La famille Belier” is a decent movie in the eyes of people who can’t really tell the difference between hearing actors acting deaf and deaf actors in roles of deaf characters however “la famille belier” caused massive outrage as they were an all hearing cast, CODA has rectified this and included deaf actors in the roles they should rightly be performing and CODA has received many rewards and nominations whereas la famille belier did not fare as well. It shows what good and correct casting can do and the talent of deaf actors. (P.s I hope you found this interesting and you enjoy watching CODA and have a lovely day wherever you are.)

A lot of American movies are remakes of international films, I also believe the creators of the original were producers on the American version.

As long as disabled actors don't get picked for roles where the disability has little to no influence on the story, then able-bodied actors should not get disabled roles. Said by me, someone who uses a wheelchair at times. I still remember an actor in the series Las Vegas. A background character who used a wheelchair. Not because the scene needed one. He was just there.

I think it was Madam Secretary (one of those white house shows if not that one) had an office staff member background extra who was in a wheelchair too, clearly they just gave the part to a person in a wheelchair, cause, why not? That's how it should be! (but for main parts as well)

In the case of a Deaf character who signs in the movie, fluency is also a huge thing.

You know, people of all backgrounds are being held back as a unit, so there's no longer a stable baseline as to the notion that people of any background can do a wide range of things. Therefore, it makes more sense to remove the qualification that people who are deaf specifically are capable of doing anything and apply that statement to everybody as a unit. We must always make a part of our thoughts and our actions the idea that we are individually and collectively capable of great things.

I did a representation of her in my English class and searching about her background, I realized how strong she was. It was an inspirational story to read. I recommend you guys to do so as it might be a motivation for you to overcome your obstacles as well.

Can we take a moment to applaude....well....all the role players here? 1) Marlee...for being so easy-going, humourous, smart, and completely comfortable with the hearing world. It is more than I can say about the Hearers toward the deaf. 2) Stephen, for being so relaxed and gracious. Interviewed her like any regular guest. If the camera was focused on him only, I'd just assume it was a regular interview with a male guest. 3) The unsung hero: the interpreter. Need I say more? It was flawless. Always one step ahead. Articulate. And kept it flowing. Was such an amazing, yet regular interview. You would have to credit all the roleplayers for the effortless synchrony.

Marlee is so amazing in so many ways! She was absolutely correct in putting her foot down for Deaf actors! As an Interpreter for 40 years, I can't even watch movies that use hearing actors and hoping we'll buy that they're fluent in ASL! It's painful. Most hearing people will be clueless, of course, but Deaf and Hard of Hearing folks, as well as Hearing who are fluent in ASL are not an insignificant group. Just like we no longer use make up to make white actors look Asian, or Latinx etc, it's also inappropriate to put Hearing people in Deaf roles. Brava Ms Matlin!

She makes my heart smile. And it has nothing whatsoever to do with her happening to be deaf. I think that she's a remarkable lady. She's so intelligent, witty, natural, beautiful, and sexy! If you'd like to see a fantastic documentary, she stars in one of my favorites called What the Bleep do we know? ( Down the Rabbit Hole) about Quantum Theory. She's as superb in it as she is in everything else that she does.
