With the newer Lumix 4K and 6K cameras like the Lumix G9 it's now possible to get focus stacking for landscapes, right in the camera.
If this video helped you, please buy me a coffee: buymeacoff.ee/imagemaven
Updated in 2019: Get the Lumix G9 Advanced Owner's Manual here: eww.pavc.panas...
Focus stacking is often used in macro photography. And it’s really easy to get stacked images right in the camera…. If you’ve been following me for awhile you know I always try to get things right in the camera, so I don’t have to spend so much time editing my photos.
#LumixG9 #FocusStacking #6KPhoto
In this video I’m using the new Lumix G9 camera but all of the newer 4K and 6K Lumix cameras have the post-focus and focus stacking feature built in.
Limitations: Internally processed focus stacking uses the Lumix 4K and 6K modes. Basically you’re shooting a video and extracting frames.
As a result you are limited to 4K or 6K sized photos. If you need larger photos you may want to do manual focus stacking - taking individual photos and merging to one file in Photoshop. But that’s a lot of extra work.
You can’t use raw files in 4K or 6K mode either. Again because these are video files. If you need to shoot raw files, then you’ll have to shoot your series of photos using different focus points, and then do your focus stacking manually using Photoshop or other photo editing software.
If you only need your photos for website, social media, and small print materials - such as real estate, or a catalogue of products - the Lumix in-camera focus stacking will be perfect and will save you a ton of time editing your photos.
Benefits of focus stacking: You can manipulate the depth of field more precisely than with camera optics alone. Example, if you want your background to suddenly drop out of focus, you can do that using a big f/stop and focus stacking.

A little tip that has nothing to do with the video: That type of camera wrist strap must be attached directly to the small cylinder. Remove the triangular key ring, and use the strap's ring :P

I would do that but I still use a long strap when I go hiking and snowshoeing. It’s just easier to attach with the triangle bits left on the camera body.

I haven’t tested that scenario myself. But with a small fstop you would have better depth of field anyhow. I have shot jewelry in the past with no focus stacking, with the whole piece in focus. So I’m not sure it’s necessary. Most people use stacking for landscapes. If you have a G9 you can test it for yourself.

Just tried this feature with my G85 for macro work, hoping it would substitute having to stack on my computer... sadly, this doesn't work. Not only is there a great deal of artifact generated (such as Marlene showed here), but also 1:1 magnification mode is impossible on my 60mm Olympus F2.8 macro lense because it only allows for manual focusing (Post Focus uses auto focus, obviously). Oh, well.

This is Ok, But there are a few issues here that Panasonic needs to fix in a new firmware upgrade. 1. I believe that the file extraction is not full resolution, it's 18meg not 20, and it's only in jpeg, Not Raw. Also, If I choose to use Focus bracketing, You can't use any flash or Strobe commander on the Hotshoe, it cancels out bracketing of any kind, period. Someone mentioned that you could use a PC-Sync cord, but I have wireless strobes, I don't want to have wires all over my studio. What they should do is allow flash and strobes to work with focus bracketing, by having a option in camera to set a shutter delay, 3-4 time options, for each bracketed shot. This would give the strobes or flashes time to recycle. I just found out that Olympus cameras are fine with this G9 short coming. There aren't too many, but this one frustrates me. I use my G9 in studio a lot. Nice training videos.

@jack_ art You can definitely get the file right out of the camera, but you need to check if Adobe Premier can actually open and edit that file. These files do open in LR and PS, but not sure about Premier as I don't use that app to edit my videos. Keep in mind though that if these sequences were taken at a high shutter speed, the video clip may be quite hard-to-watch as they jump around the frame at different focus points for about 1 second. So I'm not sure if the Focus Stacking sequences would be suitable for viewing as a clip. You may have better results with the 6K Burst modes sequences but again, they could be jumpy to watch, depending on your shutter speed, as most people are shooting fast moving subjects at 30 or 60 fps in the 6K mode. Hope that helps!

@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 жыл бұрын
Great question! I think this would be a good test subject. Just make sure you have a small f/stop for maximum depth of field, such as f/16 or f/22. You want everything in focus, I presume. And hopefully they aren't moving around. Moving insects would be impossible to do this with. I've never tested something this small, but let me know how it goes. I would think that you'd need fairly big insects - like grasshopper or bigger. You will soon know if it's not working as you will get those halos forming like I got in the video example when I used a large f/stop. With close subjects you have less depth of field anyhow, so it may be tricky. And you may not need focus stacking. Just regular ole f/22 might do the trick as far as focus goes.

Yes I do! I moved from Canon 5DMk2 to Lumix M43 about 5 years ago and the weight difference is substantial -- especially if you're hiking to places for shots with all your gear. Also the G9 has the super huge 80MP (raw and jpg) files available in the High Resolution Mode. Those are perfect for landscape photographers who want to take things to the next level. But the regular 20MP Large Size files are great too, and what I use all the time. I'm planning on upgrading to the G9 from my GX-85. I use the 4K post focus feature quite a bit for macros with the GX-85. One problem I have with it, though: the maximum exposure time is 1/30th of a second, so some of my shots are under-exposed, even with a wide aperture. Since it's a 30 fps video file, we're kinda stuck with that... or has the G9 figured out a way around that? Also, both cameras have another way to do focus stacking: there's also a focus bracketing feature. On the GX-85, this feature is pretty much unusable. The focusing increments are super tiny; I was getting hundreds of frames and still not covering the complete zone I wanted sharp. Does it work better in the G9? OH.... wait a second, I peek at the side column and I see Marlene has done a video about the focus bracketing, too. I'll watch that next.

I've been playing with my G9 and the playback of the Post Focus images. I can cycle through the DISP button to see all the variations of playback menu items. But that's the only changes I've made. The Fn1 button - also called Post Focus Play shows up for me. But even when it doesn't show up as an option, the Post Focus symbol itself shows up. When you touch that, then the Fn1 shows up and you can extract an image.

Yes, all the 4K and 6K modes shoot video files which are a series of jpgs. You can do focus stacking manually using raw files and Photoshop, but this "in camera" method is quick and easy and you don't need any photo editing software.

Hi Marlene, I mean that the focal point of the lens sometimes does not focus on the right point. You focus on your nose and your ear is sharp but not your nose. Then we are talking about back focus. Then in the camera you can normally perform a fine tunning on the lens of +3 or -3 in the menu. But apparently you can not find this function either. If you can not find this function I assume that it is not in it, since you have already gone through the menu of this camera. For this, my thanks, I still learn a lot from your video's But it is a shame about the missed funtion in the camera, I will have to do without it. Thanks for the quick response. Sincerely Hans van der Boor The Netherlands

Well explained, thanks Marlene! When it comes to auto merging why not shooting with a high F stop instead increasing the depth of field and therefore having more of the picture in focus naturally avoiding the halos? What would the difference be? :)
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 5 жыл бұрын
That is definitely an option, but even with small f/stop like f/22 you may get halos if using a long lens, because f/stop isn't the only thing that controls DOF.

Marlene, I wonder how well this would work if, say, you wanted to photograph a tree in a field in then trying to get a harvest moon behind it, assuming the two subjects were in alignment and you're trying to get them both as sharp as possible without a double exposure in camera or with the aide of Photoshop? Very interesting video.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not even sure you'd need Focus Stacking for that scenario. It would also work if you had deep depth of field using a wide angle lens (which inherently gives deeper depth of field as well), setting hyperfocal distance, and using small f/stop such as f/16. Try it! PLUS doing it this way would give a full sized file as opposed to a 4K or 6K size. Thanks for watching!

This is a nice feature for quick captures, but to anyone coming to this who doesn't know, there's focus bracketing on the G9 that can actually save RAW files. Shooting JPEGs is like getting ingredients for a dinner and just mashing them together randomly and eating it cold. The camera can't see what you see, so what you see on the back of the camera isn't important unless it's a histogram. It's about capturing light, Photoshop is the preparation of the image from the light you deem realistic/nice. People that start with "ooh I don't want to use Photoshop" might as well be chefs that tell me they hate frying pans. If you have the best scene in the world for 2 minutes and happened to choose the wrong white balance, your focus stacked image is 100% useless. Shoot RAW.

Best to talk to your printer about that to see their specs. I've printed 8MP files over 50" inches wide at photo labs. You can res them up a bit if needed. If you start with a good image, in focus and properly exposed, there will be minimal quality loss when you size up. When I use photo lab printing, I use 175 to 200 ppi at the final printed size. Do some crops with 8x10 prints to test. You need to keep in mind viewing distance as well. I've got more info in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/omOUaaqLe5hgm6c

I'm wondering if focus stacking might be useful in the following ways for bird photography novices like me? 1. A bird sat in a tree with branches around it. I find the normal autofocusing methods can be a real pita and I often miss the moment and end up with pin sharp images of branches. 2. A flock of birds on the ground where again it can be difficult to get the correct focus point quickly enough 3. Birds in flight again where focussing is something that up until now is only reliably achievable after lots and lots of parcatice It may come down to how quickly the various shots that make up the 4k/6k image can be taken and/or recorded. The speed of the card may be the bottleneck rather than the camera ?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Kevin, thanks for your question... Option 1 -- possibly. But you're likely better off using a different focus method. If you have a Lumix you can touch the back of the screen, or choose a more pin point focus setting, maybe even face/subject detection. Guess they need a "bird" detection setting ;) For Option 2 and 3, one of the 4k/6K burst modes would likely work better. And for Option 2, using a smaller f/stop for better depth of field so more of the birds are in focus. And in general focus stacking works best with a tripod/monopod so you've got that pita to deal with too, but I do know a lot of birders who use monopods with their long lenses. Are you a Lumix shooter? Check out the 4k/6k burst modes, if you have a newer Lumix camera. More videos to come on that from me too. I did make some 4K Burst mode videos using my GX8 a couple years back if you want to check them out.
