does the digital zoom work well with a telephoto lens? I do have a regular video camera as well as a g7 and a rack for my bike so i plan on being prepared . but once I have my g7 on a tripod and i see a deer from 100 yards away I Can turn it around and get some deer clips too.

Did you find a use for back button focus now with the Milky Way shots, Marlene? 😊 Thanks for all the great vids!!!
@ImageMaven

Yes, if you shoot in manual focus and you press and hold the back button focus (af-on) then that’s how you focus for the Milky Way. I show that in my latest video about shooting stars.

@@ImageMaven Yeah, I had just watched your five year old back button focus vid where you said it wasn't for you, so I thought I'd comment 🤓. I was on Mount Allan Sept 16, the night of the crazy Northern Lights show, (with my G9), and luckily remembered how to set the back button focus. I'm either unfamiliar how to lock manual focus, or the original G9 is just not capable of low light night sky focusing... (?). The BB saved the night though and I was essentially able to lock auto focus then point and shoot in any random direction. No tripod either, but I was able to capture some highly passable hand held shots!!!

I really enjoyed watching your video, and I like your presentation style (and battery drain note). I have a G9 + 100-300mm ii. My next upgrade will be Topaz Photo AI. If you still have your G9, a video comparing the G9 mark 1 + 100-400mm with the G9 ii + 100-300mm. ie which to upgrade: camera or lens :)
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 12 күн бұрын
I likely won’t do a video on that topic but if you can afford it, get the G9ii. You might even find a good used one these days. And the 100-400 might be kicking around too as it was recently upgraded to a Mark 2 version so the original could be had for less. Still is a sizeable investment though. But the G9ii is a great camera. I’ve also had great success with the OM-1 with the 100-400mm lens. And you could probably pick up a new OM-1 (original version) for less now too.

@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 17 күн бұрын
That's a long answer. Indoors or outdoors? Moving subjects or still? Start with iA Mode on your G100, if you're really new to photography. Then take those settings and modify them if needed. In general though, you need a slower shutter speed, wider f/stop and higher ISO when shooting in low light.

I tried this feature on my G9 two nights ago, when the skies were clear, to see if I could make it work. The camera would indicate "LOW" in the AF area, but never STAR. However it was focusing on stars most of the time. I was using at 15mm/1.7 lens and point up so there was no horizon in the photo, just stars. I remember trying star AF when I first got the G9 (many firmware revisions ago, and the 20mm/1.7 lens) and also being unable to trigger it. The manual doesn't list any prerequisites for star AF except stars.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 20 күн бұрын
@@NicDade Yes I’ve had that too. Focus on the stars also works even if it says ‘low’. I’ve done it many times. You can double check with focus peaking. Sometimes extra light, like moonlight, or another mystery reason, seems to stop the word ‘star’ from appearing.
@NicDade
@NicDade 20 күн бұрын
@@ImageMaven Thanks for answering. The moon two nights ago was still a newish moon, and wasn't up when I tried, but there is always sky glow from the nearby metropolis. Perhaps I'll have to wait until I get back to the mountains if it requires a dark sky conditions. As you said, it still focuses on the stars. I should try with longer lenses too, so focusing is more critical.

Thanks. Nice to know. I use the OM-5 and the OM-1 mkii, and have used the Panasonic-Leica 9mm, as well as OM system primes for astro. Like you, I tend to use the flip screen vice the EVF. Starry Sky AF works amazingly well, even with light pollution. For star trails, combining SS AF with Live Composite is terrific. I've set it up and let my camera run for almost three hours to get some cool effects. Glad the Lumix line has the Starlight feature. Manual focusing on stars is hard, especially for my old eyes. :)

Dear Marlene, Thanks for your content, always very useful and well-structured. I speak little English but I follow you willingly. To be honest, I have always discarded the G100 because the worst thing about Panasonic is its marketing. (even in Italy it is truly terrible). Now I have purchased a G100D to accompany my G90. I wanted a really small camera to always carry with me with the fantastic 12-32 or the wonderful Panaleica 25. I essentially take photos, and that is why I have never considered the small Lumix, presented as a Vlogger camera. Instead I was surprised. It is truly a miniature G90. It perfectly embodies the spirit of the M43 and with the right lenses (14 - 15 - 20 - 25 - 12/32) it is truly a jewel. Once the buttons are configured it is perfect, pleasant and fun. The D version with its OLED viewfinder and USB C port made it perfect. Have a good day.

Wow, that is an amazing tip for focusing on stars. I was going to experiment with Hyperfocal Distances, especially for my completely manual Laowa 7.5mm lens but I'm all giddy now.😀 I'm not sure if you have ever heard of a KZbin astrophotographer called Alyn Wallace. Sadly he died earlier this year, however before he died he created and published probably the best book ever to specifically discuss everything astrophotography. His family have printed a second run of the book and its due to be distributed through his channel very soon. The book is very spendy at around £80. Its a massive, heavy, book with information that is practically priceless and in my humble opinion worth every single penny. My mate had a couple of his images published in the book and there are even one or two images by the KZbinr Simon d'Entremont in there as well. I don't know if you use any apps to help plan your nights out under the stars, however I can highly recommend an app called Photo Pills. Not only does it tell you, and show you stuff like, with augmented reality, where the sun will set or where the moon will rise, but it will advise the best shutter speeds for specific camera sensors and lens combinations. There are tons of other features in the app that will help you out as well, including where the Milky Way will pop up.
