I wish Toyota had done this from the beginning. I’ve been having trouble with 4WD for a couple months now

Dude, I just "wasted" like 3 hrs thanks to you. :^ ) I watched your vid and then went to your Taco World page where you did a major write-up. Read it all - loved it! You spelled it all out so anyone interested can duplicate your mods with all the links to sites given. You're methodical and meticulous - Marine Corps trng, sir! Ooh rah! I'm a retired Navy guy ('07) and now working at a Naval Depot facility doing F-18 rework & other acft. I thoroughly enjoyed your vid & your TW writeup. Not sure exactly how that'll apply to my GX-470 and LX-470, but you had some pearls I picked up on. Thx!

I really appreciate the compliments! It's been a labor of love, both the write-ups and the truck. I got sick of hunting and digging for hard-to-find information and wanted my build thread to be a bit easier for others to navigate through the junk and BS to find valuable information. Glad you enjoyed it :D

Sup dude, aircraft mechanic here! Haha Would I be able to install the triple sticks without installing the crawl box yet? Do you think that would work since you’ve already gone through the process and seen the internals and what not. I have a 2011 Tacoma AC 6sp manual trans 4x4.
@obamadontreadgood2 жыл бұрын
I don't think you could do that, at least not with the RADesigns sticks I used. I don't think it was be easy or practical to Frankenstein the triple shifter temporarily to make it work like that. There is good news though: if you do the FJ swap with the twin stick mod, and cut the hole in the floor for the shifter, the hardest part is pretty much over and the crawl box will just button up in between the trans and xfer case with the triple sticks when you do get it. I believe it's Trail Gear that has a double stick option for the FJ case that would work until you're ready for the crawl box.

Bro, bad ass mod. I've been wanting to do this since I came across it. I noticed, maybe because you're manual, you didn't need to shift levers, then push any type of button. Did you bypass this with the FJ arm as well? I'm in a 2013 auto, so am curiois?? 2nd, did you mean S.A. Tx?? Thanks for the vid. Bad ass truck!!!
@obamadontreadgood4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It's a really fun mod. Completely changes the offroad game. I think you're talking about the ADD to engage the front differential that comes on Tacomas. I deleted the ADD when I installed the FJ transfer case replacing it with the solid FJ tube. Everything in my 4WD is mechanical, no failure-prone, plastic-gear-driven actuators to engage or disengage for 4WD to work for me. It goes in and out of 2/4WD, High/Low, and 1:1/4.7:1 with each of the three levers. And yea, I'm in SATX. You can see more of my build here ---> www.tacomaworld.com/threads/hoverlover%E2%80%99s-%E2%80%9Cthere-are-many-like-it-but-this-one-is-mine%E2%80%9D-extra-long-title-bs-thread-and-build-too.545636/ Feel free to contact me there also if you want to see more of the truck. @@obamadontreadgood bad out!!! I'd love to see that truck in person. I'm actually in New Braunfels, and work in S.A. so I may have to treat for lunch and "Taco-Talk" because my schedule never allowed me any meets with cars and coffee. Man thanks for responding, and hope to meet up sometime.

Love the build! question, did your FJ tcase come from a automatic or manual? Also is it necessary to get a Hurst shifter to clear the Triple shifter?
@obamadontreadgood3 жыл бұрын
It came from an auto. I'm sure it can be done but you'll most likely need to cut a lot out of your center console as well as a lot of bending on the triple shifter. In the grand scheme of things, it's only a few hundred bucks more, it DOES drastically reduce shifter throw, and it does look pretty good even if chrome isn't your thing.
@mountainslapstick61702 жыл бұрын
How hard was this to do? Do you have to do the dual stick or can you do a single? I have a 4.0 auto I want to do this too
@obamadontreadgood2 жыл бұрын
It wasn't difficult at all, just time consuming. It can definitely be done by yourself over a weekend with the proper tools. You do not have to do the dual-stick mod but I would recommend switching over to the FJ transfer case and do the ADD delete up front if you're looking to add the crawl box, it just makes sense and it's a much better system than the Tacoma diff and xfer case. Those plastic gear driven actuators are prone to failure and cost more than a used FJ case to replace. When they do fail you're stuck in 2wd, 4hi, or 4low. That said, many have had good results sticking with the factory Tacoma transfer case.

Great video, I had a dual case setup in my 95 pickup. Loved having a twin stick. My stock transfer case and marlin crawler were top shifting. Does your triple stick have levers coming over transfer case to get the shifters that far forward? Does your triple stick get in the way of your transmission shifter? Also the FJ case, did you use the one from an Automatic ? Did you have to do any custom wiring? Did your speedo cable hook up to the FJ case? Thank you
@obamadontreadgood4 жыл бұрын
I spent a lot of time measuring, removing, heating, bending, and repeating to get them to fit in the factory shifter location without hitting the trans shifter. It was a pain in the ass and took the better part of a day to do, but I got it exactly how I wanted it. Worth it! I did use an auto FJ case but I didn't have to deal with the speedo because my 2013 taco uses wheel speed sensors. As for custom wiring, not really, I just had to bypass the 4x4 ECU to get the lights on the dash, the ATRAC, and the factory locker to work properly.
