Still have my model 60 I bought new in 1978. It still runs like a champ. First new rifle I ever bought, last rifle I'd ever sell. A true American classic.

@jeff Jeff, my wife and I both bought the Marlin model 60, my wife bought her's in 1978 and I bought mine in 1979 and both were limited editions from Otasco and both rifles still function like they were new. I've also owned two Ruger 10/22 22LR semi-auto rifles since I'd bought my Marlin, I bought the first Ruger rifle in 1986 and the second Ruger rifle in 2003, with the 1986 Ruger rifle being the best by far of the two Ruger 10/22 rifles in performance and the design, but neither of the two Ruger 10/22 rifles couldn't compare to the superior accuracy of the Marlin model 60, with or without a scope and regardless of the range. I personally believe the Marlin model 60 22LR is the best semi-auto 22LR rifle that has ever been manufactured. I also owned a Remington semi-auto 22LR that was tube fed from the butt stock back in the mid to late sixties, but it wouldn't shoot hollow point ammo without jamming, my 2003 model Ruger 10/22 had the same problem, but the old Marlin model 60 would shoot any type of 22LR ammo you shoved down it's throat, with the exception I never used the sub-sonic ammo in any type of semi-auto firearm. I broke the wooden stock behind the trigger guard so I just recently replaced the wooden stock on my Marlin 60 with a ATI Fiberforce Technology Polymer Black Rifle Stock for Marlin 60, 75, 990, 995 Series for Tube or Magazine Fed Rifles, I bought it off eBay for $63 and free shipping. It really changed the looks, it almost looks like one of those black scary assault rifles that the democrats are scared shitless over, I love the pistol grip and it's super lite, I also used see through scope rings for my 3-9X40 scope and I can still use my open sights.

Same thing happened to me tonight. Replaced the buffer and was trying to get the springs compressed and ended up spending about 10 minutes trying to find the parts that flew. Wish I had watched this video first and learned about using a paper lip to keep the spring compressed. This video really helped make sure it all went back together properly. Thank you!

I found one of these rifles in my mom's storage after she died and disassembled it to clean it. It was pretty messy on the inside as I don't think it had been fired or cleaned in more than a decade. When reassembling it I had a hell of a time with that recoil spring and ended out crimping it. Got a new one ordered and am looking forward to plinking a few rounds out of it at the local range. Looks like these things go for anywhere from $250 to $350 on private sales! Mine is one of the older ones with the 22" barrel.

Thank you so much for helping me figure out how the hell to replace the trigger/action assembly right back in place after the reverse step of the bolt carrier block and recoil spring/spring guide rod!! 😊 I struggled so much until I handled the action by pulling it backwards by the bolt handle, which you correctly stated will allow the trigger assembly to swing back in place towards the rear, then held by the plastic pin. My Marlin 60 is 12 years old (acquired in 2012) and for once I needed to deep clean it in Ballistol plus bore snake the barrel before taking it back out at the range again. (I chose to skip the steps of taking apart the trigger assembly and removing the trigger guard unit being held by only one screw into the wood stock for my own simplicity's sake as a first timer on taking care of this gun.)

Hey Jason, had a minute to take a look at it. Actually will be quite simple, on top of the bolt you will see two small pins that are underneath the bolt handle. With a small punch drive them out and you can replace the extractor pieces you need, there is a right and left to the extractor so unless you are changing both halves you only need to drive out one pin. Note! there is a small spring under a bit of pressure just make sure not to lose it but very quite to punch out and put back together. If you want or need a picture send me an email and I can fire you back a couple photos.

Thanks for making this video. I've had my Marlin Model 60 for longer than I can remember. Maybe since the mid 90's. Anyway, I'm embarrassed to admit this but I have never cleaned the trigger and bolt assembly. I have cleaned it through the ejector port but that is not very through. After about 30 years and more ammo than I can remember, the bolt is getting sticky. So I know it needs to be cleaned inside. I also like Hoppes for my rifles and Winchester ammo has been the best for this rifle. It's a great plinker and squirrel rifle.

Found your video. Great job. Needed to replace the buffer which disintegrated after many years and of course clean out all the crud that accumulated during that time. I don't think you actually have to remove the large circlip since the plate comes off easily with the bold close lever remaining in place. An update. After reassembling the rifle I discovered the bolt was being restricted somehow. Took it apart put it back together over and over. Could not figure out the problem. So I went back to your video and watched the reassembly part several times and finally discovered that I had not replaced the short end of the ejector spring into the correct position. Now it seems to function properly. Hallelujah! I’m of to the range to test it out. Thanks again for a great video. Saved my bacon!

Hey Vergil, hopefully this makes sense without pictures. 1) lay rifle across your lap, sights down 2) insert rod into end of spring (don't compress yet) 3) insert end of rod/spring into notch/hole at the rear of the receiver/rifle 4) put long/loose end of spring into end of bolt 5) keep spring and bolt in line and as close to rifle as possible. roughly 30 degree angle 6) left hand -start compressing the spring by pushing the bolt rearward 7)make sure as you are doing this that rod and other end of spring are firmly seated in end of receiver (this holds it in place for you) 8) use right hand to align rod and spring into end of bolt as you continue compressing 9) one bolt clears frame it should drop down into place

U didn't put the extractor spring in the right spot. You hooked the L bend into the top Grove of the cartridge lifter. It has to go on the bottom! If you don't then when you fire once it's going to pop the extractor spring out of place causing it not to cycle ammo.

Three things I would check to start. 1 - make sure the rifle and internal parts are all good and clear. 2 - use only good quality ammo. I found that Winchester Super X gave me lots of problems but other people have had good success with it. You should try several brands to find one that works well. High velocity is what you want...more than 1200 fps. 3 - check the extractor and make sure it is not damaged

First thing that jumps out at me....don't dry fire. I have done that before I knew I shouldn't have and in fairness I have dry fired 22s since, but it is almost guaranteed to cause issues. Center fire is more forgiving but that is bad news with rim fire, I suspect your firing pin has been damaged, may still leave a mark in the rim of the shell but probably doesn't squeeze it hard enough to set off the primer. Fortunately not a super expensive part to change out.

Hey quick question! What exactly does the buffer do and how does it affect the gun when it is broken? Does it control recoil and affect the cycling system? THANKS!
@mattsgaragediy
@mattsgaragediy Ай бұрын
The buffer helps to absorb the shock of the bolt slamming backwards. If it is fully intact it should be fine but they can harden and crack over time. If it is damaged or chipping off it is more than time to replace it. They are cheap and readily available if you are taking the rifle apart to rebuild it is cheap insurance to replace it at the same time. If it looks good and you are having cycling problems there could be other issues as well. Recoil spring, ammo, powder build up.

I have one of the last Model 60s made, a "Remlin" Model 60, made in Huntsville, Alabama. I doubt these will ever be made again under the Marlin name, as long as Marlin remains under Ruger ownership. Ruger doesn't want anything cutting into their 10-22 sales. Both guns are masterpieces IMO, yet different as night and day by operation and the way they handle.

What was it like when you went to chamber a round and it never picked one up? Because that’s what happened to me… you didn’t put the extractor spring back on correctly
@mattsgaragediy
@mattsgaragediy Жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, when I've had it not pick up a round, it just cycles from the previous round firing and then I have a dry fire. (Very rare for me, was just in need of a deep clean after hundreds of rounds of cheap ammo). Good eye noticing the extractor spring, I added a note in the video description as it is virtually impossible to edit the video once posted.

Does anyone know the part number/specific name for the plastic piece on the back side of the action? Mine has totally disintegrated over time and is cracking apart
@mattsgaragediy
@mattsgaragediy 4 ай бұрын
I think the piece you are referring to is called the buffer. I know you can get it from Numrich gun parts which has been my go to for lots of parts. But if you search online "marlin model 60 buffer' there are lots of options, especially if you are in the US

I thought he lost one of those little E-clips.... I already lost all 4😂 he used a safety pin as a spring, I used little cut off pieces of an Arizona can to make my E-clips.

Hey Trenton, sorry for the confusion, I added a note in the description to help clarify. Note: at 8:16 - short leg of extractor spring clips below the "s" bend of the cartridge lifter leg. hope this helps

I’m having an issue where everytime I put the feed assembly back into the gun the extractor spring pops off of the lifter, any ideas would be very helpful
@mattsgaragediy
@mattsgaragediy Жыл бұрын
Hey Spppanky, number one thing I would check / do is make sure the bolt is locked in the fully retracted position. If it isn't the spring his on the bottom of it and can mis align it causing fail to eject issues. With the bolt locked fully back the assembly should rotate into place with no issues.

@@mattsgaragediy hey thank you for the reply! Turns out I wasn’t pressing the spring all the way down past the lifter! Everything works perfectly now :) Thank you for your video to! Without it I wouldn’t have been able to put my marlin back together haha

Hey Derek, I used the following link for a parts diagram, but I have not found a written set of instructions, that was my motivation to make this video. My newer model has only one "screw"" holding the stock to the rest of the rifle and and it's nothing I've ever seen before none of my drivers will fit into what looks like a round hole in the head of the screw. It came from the factory like this. Can anybody help me out?

That does seem strange. I have not seen that before, any chance it is a small hex hole for an Allen Key or something like a torqex bit?

Good informative video but one thing for sure you need to pay more attention to detail so everything doesn't get all scratched up or bend the recoil spring more than it already is. No problem working on your own firearm doing it that way but please don't do it to someone else's if you are helping them.

@@mattsgaragediy I figured it out for the most part. Thank you for the reply, link. I was afraid I was going to deform the bolt to get the rear 'extractor' out. That pin just wouldn't budge. Wondered if it had to come out from a certain side. The bolt being so thin on that side. I didn't want to damage it.
