Marmorino KS | matte/satin venetian plaster

I have an area around the fireplace with hardie backerboard that I will Ardex Feather finish first, and then Marmorino KS on top, like you did on your fireplace. Above that I have painted drywall. 1.To get the same finished look on the bottom backerboard and top drywall, do I need to use both the Ardex and the Maromorino on both sections, or just finish the drywall with the Marmorino KS? 2.Will lightly sanding the painted drywall be sufficient to bond the Marmorino, or do I need a bonding agent? And 3, how do I tint the Marmorino, at the paint store? Thanks

1. You don't need to use the Ardex to get the same look. That was only used to create a seamless surface for the plaster to go on. 2. I always recommend using a primer before applying plaster. If you are using maramino KS, I'd recommend a quartz primer - bit.ly/firenzeprimer 3. You can't tint this at the paint store. You will either need to buy this pre-tinted or tint it using plaster tints.

I used a feather finish on my fireplace as my first step, and found that it was easier for me to use a 4 or 6" joint knife rather than my rectangular trowel and it turned out great and am tempted to leave as is except that we don't want the grey color so we will use Firenze Marmorino KS tinted to our taupe color. 1) Can I use a 4" or 6" joint knife for the venetian plaster and get the same effect that you are doing, or will it have too much movement? I hesitate to put money into a trowel that I may not be able to get the hang of. 2) How do you avoid the black marks that I got when I burnished my feather finish? 3)Do you have a video on how to do an outside corner smoothly? Marmorino KS can be matte if you don't burnish that much. Venetain plaster in general tends to have marble dust in it, so that will always have a tiny bit of sparkle to it. If you are wanting something even more matte/flat, I would look at something that has clay in it. In my option clay tends to be a bit more matte. The main thing I suggest when dealing with uneven surfaces is making your surface smooth before using your venetian plaster. Venetian plaster is an expensive way to fill in gaps and voids in your wall so using other materials to make the surface smooth first will be your best bet and give you the best results. In the case of the fireplace, this might mean over-grouting the entire things to get the fireplace ready to be venetian plastered. Great question! They are both very similar in my option. Depending on how you apply them, they might look identical. Comparing them in-person, VP Suede is more matte and by that I mean the sheen is more diffused than Marmorino KS. When the light hits VP Suede there's less definition in the sheen. I would say Marmorino KS is just ever so slightly finer which is probably why the sheen is slightly different. I hope my descriptions help! Hi! I am new to plastering and I really enjoy your videos! I am kind of stuck and I was wondering if you may be able to give me some tips. I am using the marmorino ks untinted plaster on a range hood I built. The range hood is made with drywall and it has the steel edges along with a joint compound. I went ahead and applied the Venetian plaster, and it is my first time so I think I used way more than necessary. I did sand off the excess but I ran out before I could give it a second coat, cover the edges and small sections on the side of the hood. What is your best recommendation moving forward, should I seal while I wait for more plaster to be shipped, is it ok for it to stay unsealed in a kitchen area? Also, would it be ok to layer the plaster in some areas to cover the edges, even though the plaster would already be set for a while by the time the plaster arrives ? I really need your help, and thank you for thanking the time to read this 😁

Hi Tania, Glad our videos have been helpful! My recommendation would be to wait till you are able to complete the project before applying sealer. I would also make sure to sand and prep the edges of the area where you already applied, so you can feather in your new plaster. This will help with adhesion and help make it more seamless. This job might be a bit tricky so I would just take it slow and make sure you're happy with how it's turning out as you go. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have other questions.

Tania- I am getting ready to have a range hood done in a plaster also- question. What did you do for the undersides? we have about 12 inches underneath on each side of the vent. Did you? Did you plaster it? Will the Marmarino ks be waterproof or do you think there will be pasta sauce splatter on there that will never be wipeable???? eek. Thanks! Would love to know both of your opinions on it.

This will slightly depend on how fast it’s drying at your location but generally speaking you’ll want to stop every 3-4 feet and burnish as your applying. You shouldn’t be pulling that much plaster back off when you burnish, so if you are, you should wait a little longer. The plaster does still need to be a bit workable as your burnishing, so you also can’t let it dry too much. Hope this helps.

Burnishing makes it smooth. It compresses the final layer into the bottom layer giving it movement. You can do less burnishing if you’d like. It’s really up to you. The whole process is more of an art than a science. The main thing would be to test it before trying it so you know what your getting yourself into. Also, the shine really depends on the type of product you use. With marmorino KS even if you burnish a lot, it still won’t ever be that shiny because of how it’s made.

You wont get this look when doing a large wall though, you will have dry lines all over with this particular method

@@Statement_stone you always want to keep a wet edge when burnishing to avoid this and always start your strokes away from the burnished area to feather it in. This is why I recommend applying in one direction. You can also use a bit of mist to keep it moist.

Hello i just want to know if i have to use firenze primer for marmorino ks, or ANY primer would do?

Firenze Primer is going to give you the best adhesion for your plaster. This is because it's a quartz primer which means it has small tiny aggregate in it. This makes the wall sorta feel rough like sand paper and give the plaster a better grip. All that being said, you can use a normal primer as well but obviously the recommended primer would be some sort of quartz primer. You can also find different brands that offer quartz primers as well. Did this answer your question? Let me know either way.

Hi, i have a brick veneered fireplace that I want to cover using Ardex feather finish to create a flat surface. Do i need to prime that with quartz primer first then apply marmarino ks venician plaster? Or can i skip the primer? Also, if i dont add any paint additive to firenzcolor marmarino ks, would it still have some natural sandy color? Or stark white? Thank you

I haven't tested not priming the feather finish before applying marmario but my guess is that you'd probably be fine. You should test it before doing a large area though. If you don't tint the marmario KS then it's sort of a milky white color. If you wanted it more sandy color then you'd need to add some pigment into it since the base color is white.

If you want a mirror finish, check out Grassello Fino from Frienzecolor - bit.ly/grassello-fino. They also have a plaster called Mirror which is similar. For sealer, you'll want to you a wax such as Cera Wax. Hope this helps.

The best and cheapest boards I've found are MDF boards but you can use anything that's smooth. I'd also recommend priming the board so your sample is as similar to the final as possible.

For typical drywall or smooth surfaces, I use a quartz primer with Marmorino KS. This gives a little bit of grit so the plaster can hold onto the wall better.

You'll first have to measure the wall area to determine how much you need. Marmorino KS has an 8-10 Sq. Ft. per kilo coverage rate for two coats.
