TBF I think SM2 is probably set after he's declared a Living Saint. It better explains why he can resist and push through the Chaos Sorcery. Plus Titus and his tight crew are still the ones that beat down Imurah, Calgar's acting as a distraction to keep the Lord of Change occupied and away from Titus in those final scenes.

As far as the avatars of Khaine I like to think that some slivers or shards can vary wildly in strength for the better because they are simply a larger fragment. If you drop a glass plate there will be a “large piece” and pieces so small they’re just not a good rep for the larger plates girth. Fulgrum fought an avatar of Khaine that would have killed Calgar outright. You can’t say that they’re both of equal strength Fulgrum is way more powerful

Well, Calgar didn't even try to punch the lord of change in space marine 2. Heck, he never throw a single fist at all during the cutscenes. And yes, the avatar's power is varied. Valedor told briefly how an avatar survived for more than 4 days alone in a planet swarmed by Tyranids. When the eldar forces returned to said planet to destroy the planet along with the swarm, the avatar was still fighting atop the hill of tyranid carcasses, apparently having killed several giant tyranids (was never mentioned which types) in the process as well. The warshard in the second book of ghost warriors kicked the arse of a daemon prince/greater daemon or two rather handily. Same goes with the avatar that appear in one of Ciaphas Cain's books. The point is, each one is a different avatar belonging to different craftworlds/group (warshard being held by an autarch serving the Ynnari).

Other point. Calgar has always been used to punching up, Fulgrim punches down. So fighting something like a scaled up Eldar would be a surprise for Fulgrim. Also maybe that shard of Khaine sensed the Laer Blades Slaaneshi BS and it activated its hate boner for its slayer in particular

Here are some ideas for consideration: What if every Astartes Legion staged a coup on the Emperor and took over the Imperium? How would they rule it and how successful would it be, compared to the canon Imperium? (this is all legions on the same side with minimal Chaos influence on events) What if 2 Primarchs held the Warmaster position cooperatively, under the assumption that those who would take issue at one Warmaster would respect the other one more and they could thus overall be more productive? Which nonhuman species would be the best fit for Chaos to take over and attain galactic dominance? If any one Loyalist and Traitor Primarch switched sides for the Horus Heresy, who would you choose for the best outcome for either the Loyalists, or the Traitors? What if the Silent King never got rid of his Command Protocols and took (almost) all the Necrons with him out of the galaxy to perhaps find a new and better one and come across the Tyranids? What if the Great Crusade had all the Primarchs and none turned Traitor, but there were no Astartes? What if the Beast Orks succeeded in defeating the Imperium? What if the Raptor Project succeeded/was never sabotaged? How would each Heresy/Crusade-era Primarch and Legion fare against the modern Tau Empire? What if one of the Primarchs landed on a xenos world and was raised by them? What if the Eldar managed to kill Angron before he was enslaved? What if another power rose to power during M31 instead of the Imperium, such as the Ullanor Orks, the Rangdan, or the Necrons via the Silent King returning early? What if the Beast Orks grew to threaten the Imperium before the Heresy could happen? What if the Tyranids arrived in M31, before the Heresy could happen?

Dividing every though bit more cleanly would help. 1: We would have roughly 1.8 million astartes and their primarchs against nearly everything else that 30k imperium has to throw at them. This means guardsmen with uber buffed weaponry and custodes becoming norm for super soldiers. roughly 180k of custodes would be equal to all the astartes so not really achieveable in short time, leaving maybe 20k tops so the balance of power would be heavily on the side of astartes forces yet they would likely be overwhelmed due to disagreements among primarchs. Especially ones that had actual tooth to pick with emperor would have hard time remaining with more calm minded ones which would end in three way split: Religious lunatics, raging lunatics and more normal ones. Emperor also would win against all primarchs in one on one so their options are extremely limited, mostly towards similar full frontal assault as horus heresy did. 2: Two primarchs competing rather than working together is more likely option, which would see non-warmasters try to begin competing too. They are not exactly adviced to work on eachothers weaknesses at any point so exploitation would become a norm. Malcador could change this easily, emperor most likely wouldn't have the focus to keep them in check. 3: Humans are canonically only real option as they are not bound to warp beings already. Sure, corrupting eldar is possible and that is slaneesh domain, corrupting orks is possible but that is domain of khorne, corrupting tau is possible but that is domain of tzeench and corrupting nids is possible but that is domain of nurgle. Each have a way to do something to other major races but they can't all get to one of them. 4: Swapping Lion and Magnus would be most intresting. Lion lost everything and was broken yet woke up loyal, breaking him further and causing him to work with the fallen? Yes please. And the one who was betrayed over and over, remaining loyal trough it all instead of breaking away each piece that made him feel bad enough to go and throw temper tantrum betrayal himself? Yes please. Basically the two wtf is this guys getting swapped. With Magnus, we don't need to lose malcador and we get more open handed approach by emperor and the project over webway doesn't have to be lost. Lion going mad is basically taking the only one that has practically unlimited potential getting connected to warp 10 000 years earlier. Rest are very much limited by their own lack of curiosity out of all things. Magnus loses that curiosity as part of his ascension. 5: we lost 2 armies to play with, no thanks. 6: More focus on weaponry, more focus on bullshittery, more focus on numbers. The galactic fleet would need to be upped roughly 10 times in size just to transport the troops around for same outcome. Considering how much of that fleet is relic ships, we got a problem. 7: Orks win imperium = Most of good fights gone. Orks live to fight so they would further devolve until waking up of all necrons. 8: Raptors would effectively be "Public enemy number one" in eyes of all chaos forces so their implementation en masse would result in constant cycles of corruption, making the war way more intresting at the 40k time. Corax would not be a warp bound boogieman but instead a leader of army of boogiemen to the warp. Pretty much all of the ones who get corrupted would be potential demon princes so not even one of the traitor primarchs would like the situation losing their favor over some upstarts. Don't like the idea, everything becomes too messy and we are talking about warhammer here. 9: Quillboarman would win, lion would win, angron would lose, lorgar would lose, rest would be pretty much 50/50 with just their own forces. 10: Sanguinius is from baal which is death/feral world filled with monstrous mutans from dark age. Mortarions home planet barbarus was ruled by alien overlords. 11: Loss of angon would most likely have resulted in Sanguinius falling to chaos. This is based off of emperor vs malcador regiside game talk. 12: Survival of fittest, humans would evolve to be even more combat oriented as in our timeline they are pretty much warriors by mind servants by bodies outside of few specific groups or genetically altered ones. 13: Easier war for humans. 14: hoo boy chaos has a fielday with spreading their corruption with the fear of tyranids around, not all of space is under control of great powers so they would have far more feral worlds to feed off of.

@@reigoj8228 Yeah i think the thing people forget about Horus vs the Emperor is that it was a case of the emperor genuinely holding back and trying his hardest to bring his son back to the light up until he saw one of his greatest sons, and had his closest friend frying on his chair. The moment the emperor stopped holding back Horus was almost instantly obliterated. 2. The only way this could work is Vulkan + 1. Every other possible combination would just fail. Perhaps Vulkan + the blueberries would work together well. Their politics and methods would disagree, but the Salamanders are pretty non caring about all of that shit so long as theres people to save, and things to be done. 3. in the assumed lore yes. But currently, Tau are oblivious to chaos/incorruptable because they have no value to chaos to corrupt due to their warp presence being basically zero. The tyranids would be impossible for Nurgle to corrupt as its a massive hivemind that is functionally beyond the ability of chaos to corrupt since once a Tyranid is cut off from the hivemind, its no more intelligent then a rock. Orks can't be corrupted by chaos because Gork and mork. Although they could theoretically hold the banner of chaos, they'd still be Gork and morks children at the end of the day, and not actually hold any benefit/loyalty towards Khorn. 4. Answer doesn't matter. Ultimately the horus heresy went so wrong because the emperor was unwilling to admit Horus was a lost cause until the entirety of terra was nearly in ruin. Swapping people around i don't think would have ultimately made it better for chaos. Quite ironically, the hand horus was dealt was actually the best possible hand. Because everything that could have went wrong for the imperium, did go wrong up until the boys in blueberry armor arrived to salvage the situation. 12. I strongly disagree. Humanity by that point was still wrecked by the whole age of strife thing. They would have evolved to be more like cadians sure. But comparatively speaking, they'd be fighting with a crossbow instead of a wooden club with a big boulder tied to it so to speak. If say the Necron's rose to prominence, humanity might try to scale up to potentially combat the threat, but because by M31 the emperor would be a freshly mangled corpse on a golden throne, Humanity would literally only be able to survive by the fact its a bunch of cavemen and would be at the complete mercy of the Necrons just opting to not conquest their worlds with no effort involved. Making every human in the 30k setting into a Cadian would be overall good for humanity, but that doesn't give them much hope against other races (except maybe orks) when they are technologically stunted for the next 10k years. And remember tech heresy stunted humanities technological growth. And war up until very recently didn't promote advancement in the Imperiums armory. So you'd be playing with 30% of astarties at best, and a bunch of cadians fighting Space T-900's. 14. True for a while, but Chaos despises the Tyranids because if the Tyranids appear anywhere in the galaxy, the warp gets all kinds of fucked up and doesn't work right. Chaos doesn't fight the Tyranids directly because afaik if Demons get slaughtered by the Tyranids they all basically experience either true death or some really fucked up shit happens to them on the way back to the warp. I honestly forget which. For a while, chaos will let the Tyranids do what they want, but once the chaos gods realize they are gradually losing power and the warp is gradually getting more and more fucked up as the Tyranid plague spreads, i could genuinely see them getting involved. Not to the defense of anyone in particular, but as of an enemy of an enemy is my friend kind of deal. Remember. If all humans die, Chaos dies with them since Tyranids interfere with the warp with the shadow they cast. It might not *destroy* the warp. But its disruptive enough to be noticable. Also Tyranids are already aware of Chaos and have made a fleet designated to ram into the eye of terror and try to beat the shit out of chaos. I don't think we've actually seen Kronos properly ram into the eye of terror yet, But the tyranids, specifically hivemind Leviathan always leaves worlds with at least a certain percentage of its biomass leftover so Kronos can refuel after beating up demons, since warp entities don't refund expended biomass. The hive fleet can, and already has begun its adaptations to counter chaos, and eventually Chaos would either be forced to fully commit to destroying/repelling the Tyranids for its own survival, or die as the hive fleet eventually adapts to be able to fundamentally destroy the warp/true death everything they encounter. Although realistically. Its likely the Heresy wouldn't happen, because even when the Astarties start to throw a temper tantum over something, if duty comes up they genuinely just forget their beef and go deal with the problem at hand, and everyone would quickly realize that the Tyranids are a bigger immediate problem then their daddy not giving them the attention they crave. If humanity could delay the Tyranids for a millennia or two (not going to happen) then humanity might stand a chance, assuming the emperor is still alive by that time. The reason i say this is because if the emperor is still alive, he can smack around the Mechanicus into stopping with the tech heresy shit and begin developing actually effective weapons against the Tyranids. We know from the Tau that virus weapons can work, and its possible to overload the tyranids by bombarding them with dozens of plagues at controlled intervals due to how their adaptations work. But without the emperor, humanity is simply too stupid, and the chains of the Mechanicus are too heavy for them to win, let alone delay their advance..

I am a bit more forgiving for Chapter Masters being a bit OP. With most of the Primarchs gone and with quite a few chapter masters biting it, having a few that can stand the test of time and be psuedo replacements for their primarchs isn't such a bad thing especially for the First Founding Legions.

I was a firm believer that Calgar was just the UltraSmurf for so long. I wished Abaddon had killed him when he was trying to slow him down. But his appearance in Space Marine 2 was so good, I’m now team UltraSmurf

That Avatar KO happened once in a game (3rd edition) we had about 2 decades ago. Back then, Calgar didn't have invulnerable save and the hit chance was relative to the WS vs WS. Avatar having higher WS meant Calgar would hit on 4+, while Avatar was hitting Calgar on 3+. Not only that, but it was initiate based, so Calgar having powerfists (used to hit last, even after I1 if I remember correctly) he would be going after Avatar. Sure, Calgar had his sword, but when Avatar (with 2 wounds left) charged Calgar (who had almighty 1 wound left) I decided that only way to have at least a chance of winning would be powerfists... So, what happened was Avatar managed to hit Calgar 3 times. Back then, Avatar had S6, meaning it would wound Calgar (T4) on a 2+. Calgar having 1 wound left (it was my Ultramarines vs combined forces of Eldar and Salamanders, me having about 2500 points and them having over 5k) and no invulnerable save, so the chances were pretty slim. But as the eldar player was about to throw his 3 dice, I obviously shouted "3 ones!" and it indeed happened. Me and the Salamander player were laughing so hard and now it was time for Calgar to hit back... 5 dice and 3 of them hit (on 4's). I needed 2+ to wound, because powerfist doubled the S value (S8 against T6). All 3 wounded and eldar player went on rolling the invulnerable save (Avatar had 5+) and failed 2, which was enough and the red on the eldar players face was more red than the vehicles on Speed Freekz when me and the Salamander player laughed our butts off. Yes, this happened, so in my headcanon Calgar is pretty awesome and whatever he does, I don't think is too overpowered at all 🤣

I have a fun theory/idea. If Space Marine 2 is set before Vigilus, GW should retcon Calgar surviving and have Titus somehow become the new chapter master! Have him be with Calgar during his fight with Abaddon. That would definitely give a certain codex thumper a dual heart attack.

My headcanon for Avatars was always that they are in fact similar to Magnus. When Eldars summon the Avatar they in fact call upon the shard of Khaine which may be super strong or kinda weak. The difference between Shards of Magnus and the Avatar would be the fact Avatars can naturally grow in power the longer they are around with each Murder and in theory can call upon more shards ultimately making Khaine whole again.
