In this Video, my friend Dodie and I are taking a Road Trip to Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire to visit the World-Renowned Prehistoric Structure of Stonehenge. Archaeologists believe it was constructed from 3000 BCE to around 2000 BCE. The surrounding circular Earth Bank which constitute the earliest phase of the Neolithic Monument have been dated to about 3100 BCE. I apologise for some of the sound quality as it was very windy around the Monument.

As many of our generation did I visited the henge as a child. My dad lived in Salisbury and we were able to walk amongst the stones and touch them. A lovely memory to cherish. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏻

I went to the free festivals back in the 70'sand was surprised at how small it felt. Once wild camped at woodhenge, nothing for me. But Avebury is always like coming home.

Thanks so much for that Marq. Your's is the first video I've seen of the new visitor centre and the new approach to the monument. I'm not sure if Stonehenge can now be classed as one of the world's biggest disappointments. I don't think I've ever met anyone who, on visiting it for the first time, found it met with their expectations. I've not been since the closure of the old road and the building of the visitor centre and it is likely that I never will again. If and when the road tunnel gets built, then i'll never see it again either. The Avebury complex wins every time for me as a visitor experience.

It was nice to visit and we had a good time but Avebury always wins hands down.

The last time I visited Stonehenge was as a teenager when you could walk amongst and touch the stones. It seems over commercialised now, and sad that you are now herded around the edge like sheep. However, with its huge popularity, I understand why the stones are protected.

I was stationed near there in the fifties, and mixed with military and civvies.. I was in tech library with a gentleman called Mr Booth, an amateur archaeologist he was trying to get permission to dig Stonehenge believing it to be a burial site. He also taught me how to dowse along a hall way, and to mark on the floor where I got responses.. I did and all the marks corresponded with water pipes, he used a special type of dowsing tool with copper wire and washers.

That is fascinating Peter, as a long time Dowser, it is amazing what can be picked up.

I remember years ago being able to walk and sit between the stones and being allowed to touch them, but I fully appreciate the security implications. Did you do any Dowsing whilst at Stonehenge? Beautiful part of English heritage 👍

Only did a bit of Dowsing around the Heel Stone.

Stonehenge is a place (as an American) I have always wanted to visit. We just don't have anything like it here in the US - unless you count Foamhenge in Georgia & the smaller stone version of it built on the Washington side of the Columbia Gorge (Marysville I think?). Shame to see it so commercialized, but as a huge of tourist destination that it is I am not surprised!!🙄

Many find Stonehenge a big disappointment Lisa. Viewed as one small part of a huge landscape, then it has some significance. However the whole 'Stonehenge Landscape' is too huge to get your head around, with so many small, subtle monuments littering a vast area. A great research project though! Avebury has fewer, but generally larger and 'chunkier' monuments distributed over a slightly smaller area to satisfy the casual visitor.

Great video although the highlight was Marq’s hair 😆 In all seriousness, I’ve never much fancied going - I’ve driven past loads of times (I went to uni in Exeter) but the idea of walking round it from a great distance with thousands of others just doesn’t float my boat!

Marq English I have only been to Stonehenge 3 times, but I felt nothing any time I was there. Disappointing to me. Avebury is wonderful though.
