Marriage and Weight Loss Surgery

I've heard many times that the divorce rate after weight loss surgery is 75% within two years. I have to say that I don't believe that number is correct, but I do know that WLS can put some real strain on your marriage. I'll explain what I've explerienced in the past two years, and how my marriage is thriving after such a big shake up called WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY.

Been blessed that my wife and I both had the switch together so we're both getting new partners. Sometimes when we walk up on each other inside a store it takes a moment to recognize each other. Your advice about going to support group together is very key!

Thank you for sharing. I just had my Surgery 5 days ago (Sleeve). Fortunately for me my Wife had hers done back in April. Great to see that we'll be able to do this together. I love the video, My husband and I have been married 23 years and I was super skinny when he met me. Then in our late 30s we had 2 babies and I’ve never lost the weight. I’m 48 now and am struggling trying to lose. I’ve also gained High Blood pressure, sleep apnea, severe joint pain, and chronic GERD. I feel like total crap! I’m now going thru the steps to move forward with Gastric Bypass. And he loves me no matter what I look like he says. He says I don’t need it but if this is what will make me better then go for it! He supports me. We also have 2 boys 11 & 13 that are overweight so hopefully this can show them good eating habits. We don’t want them to go thru WLS . I love my husband and I know he loves me and he’s seen me skinny and fat. I feel in his heart (he would never say it ) that he would like to have the skinny me back. I know I do! Your videos are awesome, you have raised questions and offered answers to things i never even considered. My husband and i are both getting the gastric sleeve surgery on the 5th of December. I don't know how either of us would have managed it on our own. I think if it was just one of us having it done and not the other, it definitely would have been a massive strain on our marriage.

Great honesty in your video & it really hit home for me. My wife & I both had gastric sleeve surgery a month apart 2 years ago (2012). She lost 120lbs & i have lost 170lbs. We were happily married after 4 years of marriage & I thought weight loss surgery would make us even closer & more active. Before surgery, we used to eat out with friends all of the time & used food as a way to be social. After surgery, neither of us liked food much because it was uncomfortable & we didn't want food at the same times. We stopped eating out, eating together & ate only when we were able to. It changed how we interacted with each other because we didn't have the dinner table time to talk to each other. My wife went from a couch potato to wanting to run marathons, hiking & sky diving. I have a serious knee issue keeping me from doing any of those activities. A year after surgery my wife asked for a separation. I was in shock. Though we both changed physically & had difficulties in how we handled weight loss surgery i never thought it would drive us apart. My wife i believe went through the things you mentioned. Being more active, looking more attractive, gaining more confidence, getting compliments & increasing her dating pool. While i know i would not be alive today if i didn't have weight loss surgery, i wish everyday we never had the surgery because i lost the love of my life because of it.

Thank God I already have such a high confidence level because I looked good in the past. It is one thing for a person to be overweight their whole life, but having attention has never been a problem for me even at my weight right now. I am sticking with my wifey :)

It's true if a woman gets more attention and you don't want to go workout everyday or change your diet and lifestyle to fit hers she will leave we got married the first month of our marriage she got the surgery then we bought a house about a year later and she turned what was supposed to be the nursery into a gym and wanted a divorce a month later she put her whole story online and had a bunch of guys liking her pics and she became obsessed with the attention and her personality changed she was nice sweet and caring when I met her now she is cold distant no sex for months not because I didn't try and she went out more and never wanted me to come attention equals wanting to see if they can find someone better it's wierd I loved her at 300 pounds and treated her like a princess and she left me for someone that was attracted by her looks

I can tell you from experience that yes, it does affect a marriage. My wife and I were strained before, but here it is 2 years later and we are going thru a divorce after 18 years together. I never thought in my wildest dreams that we'd be getting divorced, but here it is. She went through gastric bypass in 2003, me the sleeve in 2012. We both went off the chain for the past couple of years and our lives are completely ruined. Is it because of the surgery? No. It's because we both made horrible decisions for our lives. But, I can't help but think that we may still be together if I'd never had the surgery.

My wife or should I say estranged wife is two months post op. We’ve been separated for a lil over a month. I think the surgery went to her head. I still love her. But the attention she’s getting from other men now are more important to her. She’s been with 15 other men so far. I believe she needs therapy. It’s out of my hands now. I miss the person I married. I would not recommend to a couple who isn’t secure in their relationship. :’(

love your videos.. I'm about 2 months out from my surgery, and my honey doesn't want me to.. says he is losing a part of me. its crazy how similar our lives are, we love to eat together and do nothing! if i sit down, he will get my drink or bring my phone or he is the one turning off the light.. the little things that he does everyday, i never really stopped to appreciate it until now. i hope we make it through this. this surgery is so important to me. any advice on how to make this easier for him.. how to make him understand how much i need this, not cuz I'm weak, but because i just cant do it on my own.. I've tried, I've failed..

i guess what she means is don't get carried away when your poof of fish gets bigger. don't forget to stand by the person who chose to love you and stand by you when you were fat. now that you have the body and confidence, don't walk away from them. and you know, when you are losing, you are excited about your new body. you are involved in yourself so much.. make a point of giving some attention to them too. that maybe the cause of anxiety leading to divorces..

357sweetpea YES! From a size 11 to a 6.5! In fact, my ring was so big that they couldn't size it down all the way (it was a cheap ring).

Its a statistical mistake to relate the divorce rate at 50%. Ask a math professor. For example, people say there are 10 people married every year. There are 5 divorced every year. Thats 50%. Its a wrong comparison. Lets say the total population is 100. Then 10 people married every year is 10% and 5 people divorced is 5% of that total population. I hope this helps.

My wife told me that she was doing it for her health and I believed her. She just wanted to increase her "pool of fish". We divorced and now she has a different sex partner every week. Congrats to her.

@@WLSCoachLauren. No reason to be sorry, from what I gather, that is what the surgery is for. Even you said in your videos, your pool increased but, you chose to stay with your husband. I did not hear that the importance of marriage played a role in your decision but you also do not promote infidelity. Society promotes that a woman's freedom and happiness carries more weight than her commitments. No need to waste this new body on the past when you can use it to better your mate and social standing. 23 years, two kids, she never had to work a day in her life, I paid for the procedure. I was never unfaithful and always supportive and my love for her was truly singular. Now I have to sell my house and give her half of everything I own because she deserves better than me. I am the definition of blind trust and my suffering is a point of success for her. Don't get me wrong, I do not wish to discourage anyone from knowing the truth and this procedure will do EXACTLY that for anyone who does it, good or bad. Thanks for your videos ma'am, keep up the good work.
