Interesting. The ribbons reminds of how my husband and i married 20 years ago. Handfasting as pagans. Love the pragmatism and symbology that feel familiar. Miigwech.

Miigwech Love these videos. Do you know if there was like a village community that would support those who couldn't provide for themselves? I'm also curious about land ownership, I've heard it was individual but I heard from other people that most land was communal, I'd love to hear your knowledge on that.

I’ll put a video together on that in the future

Miigwech. My son is getting married this month. Is there any tradition for the mother of the groom to make or gift the bride anything? Or is it just as you said, pretty simple? I have been seperated from our culture since birth but the pull of tradition has always been very strong. Hense the name I have been borrowing for this paltform. I do not mean any disresect. I just honestly thought I would never have the oppurtunity to connect with anyone who would reconize what it is. lol Anyway, I just want the two of them to have every blessing and of course your teaching here was exactly what I needed to hear for the most part. Not required, but the family is free to make whatever gifts they feel are appropriate for the occasion. Congrats!

@@anton.treuer Miigwech! Also a huge miigwech for your videos. I am passing them along to my cousins hoping to get more of the family involved in reclaiming our heritage and writing them down making a journal for my granddaughters. 🙏

A question about French / Native marriage: did intermarriage have an “insulating” effect on those offspring from European diseases? It seems that the ravages of foreign diseases had a profound effect on population resiliency (aside from all of the other confounding factors). Miigwech.

We don't have really good objective scientific data on that during the early contact period, but it does seem probable. Natural immunity is genetic--so someone of mixed racial heritage has some measure of genetic immunity from both sides of the family.

Did Polyamory or homosexual marriage exist within the ojibwe traditionally?

Yes, both

@@anton.treuer Huh. I knew that the Anishinaabeg were more fluid in the marriage-aspect, but I am surprised about the gay relationships. The articles I read never spoke on it. Nice to see an expert give their opinion. Miigwech niijii :)

Did the colonists marry Ojibwe women only to divorce them when they brought French and British women over?
