Philippe Sly might have the purest baritone voice i’ve ever heard. He’s my second favorite behind the late great Hvorostovsky!

A little sad to see John Del Carlo again. This must have been very soon before he passed. Love all the cast, though.

Nice but, have to wonder why the highlights dont include almost none of the well-known tunes? If you want to get more ppl to go to the Opera, perhaps a potpourri of those would have been better?
@cstevenson03888 жыл бұрын
These are all tunes I recognize as Le Nozze di Figaro 😳. Can't get more famous than that!
@nathangraham16118 жыл бұрын
What is even missing? The Letter Duet and Voi che sapete ... otherwise the most famous tunes are here.
@clarehohn94076 жыл бұрын
Heavens I know all of these tunes They pretty well known if one is familiar with this opera
@robert111k5 жыл бұрын
@@cstevenson0388, except for the three generally better known: Voi che sapete, Canzonetta sull'aria (The Shawshank Redemption) and Porgi amor. And there are other popular tunes in Le Nozze, like the begining of Cinque, dieci... or Se vuol ballare signor contino, that I haven't heard either.

The Marriage of Figaro ist not a fun and playful comedy. Sure, most directors think it´s funny and bring them on stage as a slapstick-comedy, but that´s all. Figaro is in fact a satire AGAINST the noblemen, against the royals etc. (that´s why the emperor of Austria forbid it, it was seen as revolutionary). Please read the third part of Beaumarchais´ Figaro-trilogy! In it Figaro and Susanna have a boring life, most of the love is gone. The countess and the count don´t like each other, and both have children from affairs with other people. The countess has a child from cherubino, but she sends Cherubino into the war. There he is wounded on the battlefield, and while dying he writes a goodbye-letter to her with his own blood. The last words are not readable because they are blurred by his tears. But most directors don´t care for that - they say "Hey, let´s make a funny comedy out of it, who cares about the third part, who cares about the original intentions of the creator?".

But Mozart's opera is NOT Beaumarchais' play, it's based upon it, but he and da Ponte could only make and produce this opera by taking the revolutionary bits out of if. That's the genius of the opera; in it, da Ponte and Mozart show the humanity of ALL the characters, they don't just paint some as 'evil oppressors' and others as 'poor widdle victims'. That's tedious AND it would date the piece. By making the red thread through the piece that inappropriate love is, well, inappropriate, the piece has become a timeless classic. The reason why Beaumarchais is not read anymore is because he was a product of his time and place, while Mozart's opera of appropriate and inappropriate love, jealousy and human foibles is of all times and all places.
