Regarding the split-up-the-characters trope: the difference with the Expanse is that they knew this was coming since season 1, and spent four years setting up the back stories.

Lydia: We learned about "Lydia Maalouf from Baltimore" back in season 2 already (2x08). Amos was searching for her name on the Roci's computer. 04:08 Did you realize the (almost) one-shot sequence in the Baltimore opening scene? They flew in on a helicopter, passed the camera to a crane (with a hidden cut), then passed it to the cameraman on the ground (no cut) who then followed Amos on the street. 10:12 Did you get the Simpsons reference right before that scene? *No bowl, stick, stick" 11:23 There is no up and down, and therefore no upside-down, in space. Also, it's not harder for your blood to pump, it's easier. It doesn't have to pump it against gravity. 19:25 They're not real brothers. It's just a "bro" thing. They were both working for mob boss Amos Burton as kids. Remember Monika telling Amos that the only Amos Burton in Baltimore she could find was "kind of a mob boss" back in season 3?
@gazzamanazza4pm
@gazzamanazza4pm 7 ай бұрын
To answer your question about whether blood pools in Zero-G - the answer is actually "yes, sort of, but it's not for the reasons you might think, and whether one is upside down or not has nothing to do with it!" The human heart is designed to battle against gravity and pump blood upwards to the brain where it's needed the most. However, it will continue to do this in Zero-G, so one's blood will pool up in the upper half of their body regardless of which way around they are. That's why, if you look at pictures of astronauts on the International Space Station, it's common for their faces to appear slightly red or puffy. It's also why Naomi and other Belters struggle with planetary levels of gravity - their heart, lungs, muscles and bones all developed in the absence of g-forces, so they're not designed to work against those forces.
@XeonAlpha
@XeonAlpha 7 ай бұрын
Also this was a major point during season 3 when the speed limit changed in the ring space injuring thousands. Without gravity any kind of internal bleeding is a death sentence. Spinning up the drum on the Behemoth was to provide enough spin gravity to save people with bleeding injuries.
@gazzamanazza4pm
@gazzamanazza4pm 7 ай бұрын
@@XeonAlpha That had more to do with the lack of g-forces resulting in wounds not naturally draining, so clots would form in places they shouldn't and would therefore be fatal, but you're correct in that the same physical principles are behind both things.

One of the main reasons The Expanse's take on "scattering" the crew works is because the entire series has built up to this point. None of the elements that drew the Roci crew away from their ship/family was entirely introduced this season. From the corruption in Mars, Avasarala's limited authority, Alex's family dynamic, Holden's inability to ignore protomolecule threats, Naomi's son, Amos' past. All of it has been seeded for several years/books/seasons, and the characters are developed enough that we actually want to see them explore these plotlines. While the original authors certainly had this intent as well, many of the modifications that were made for the TV adaptation were added to serve this purpose even further, which was a great move by the showrunners/writers.
@pali1d

A detail worth noting: Erich in the books has the exact same disfigurement. So they intentionally sought out an actor who had it as well, because it's too important a character detail to abandon.
@Justanotherconsumer

One of the better bits of disability representation that they do in the show is that it’s just kinda there. It’s not what defines him as a character, no one really talks about it or pays attention to it and it isn’t played for pity or sympathy, it’s just part of who the guy is.
@AnotherScribbler

@pali1d

@@Justanotherconsumer I agree that it certainly doesn't define the character, but a street kid with such a disability managing to rise to the top the way he did definitely hints that this guy's mind is nothing to scoff at - hence why I said it was too important a character detail to lose.

The show handles the separate story lines so well. Charles is played by Frankie Faison, who was Commissioner Burrell in The Wire. It cracks me up to see he's still in Baltimore all those years later. The Expanse gets such great performances from one-episode characters, like Charles or Champa in the 52 scene in Season 2, etc.
@AngeloBarovierSD

I go on about all the wonderful people I met working on the show (on and off screen) but we were spread out quite a bit for the Baltimore scenes and I never even got to lay eyes on Frankie Faison. And that’s to my eternal regret, both because “The Wire” is one of the greatest shows to exist and Faison also played some iconic (to me) roles, including the impeccable “Pop” in Luke Cage. Just to have been able to shake the man’s hand would’ve made my year. Alas, can’t always get what I want.

Alfred Hitchcock had a famous example of tension, and I'm sure I'll butcher it, but it basically goes like this. If you have two guys at a table talking about baseball and then you have a bomb go off under the table, you've created a moment of sheer terror. But if you show the audience that there's a bomb under the table, that ten minute conversation about baseball becomes an entire nightmare of stress and anxiety. I feel like that is the atmosphere created by the rocks that are coming

@@Justanotherconsumer One of my favourite lines from Amos is actually from the books when Holden asks him about Bobby and her combat abilities. "See Cap, I'm what you might call a talented amateur. You guys finally get to meet Drummer's Poly-Am-Fam!!! They're one sexy group of collectively married people!! Also, this is a GREAT season for Amos!!! We get to learn SO MUCH about his past!! And this is basically the first season we see Amos flying solo, without his surrogate conscience(AKA his crew) helping him make decisions. So things are BOUND to be interesting!!! Also, it's much easier for your heart to pump blood in zero-G, because it doesn't have to fight gravity anymore to pump it up from the bottom of your feet to the top of your brain. That's why Belters have comparatively weaker hearts than Inners and have to do a LOT of exercize and usually take a bunch of drugs before they can even hope to step foot on a planet.

I love the way they handled Amos' trauma. My father worked on child services law and frequently encountered people who dissociate from trauma. They might not LITERALLY see themselves as children, apart, but they definitely tend to think of another person having the bad stuff.
@Justanotherconsumer
@Justanotherconsumer 7 ай бұрын
My wife deals with family law and there’s a situation that’s explained coming up where she thinks the show could have gone a bit farther with what is typical for moms in that situation, that “giving up and moving on” is basically impossible for most. The show eventually goes into a bit of how that transition happened, but the mom in question definitely gets at least passing grades for the amount of effort she puts in to attempting to get her kid back. There’s a very good depiction of the relationship between abusers and abused coming up too, to the point where content warning is a very real consideration.

Great reaction😊 the reason book 5 is my favourite of the series is that each of the Rocci crew gets their own POV. Up until now, we had only seen each of the crew through Holdens perspective (or one of the other POV's that change every book) The other advantage of splitting up the crew is that you get to see what's happening through the crews eyes on Tycho, earth, mars, and in the outer belt. S4 had a really difficult job as it had to reset after the chaos of S3 and set up everything moving forward. I agree it's the weaker season, but I think it was necessary.

Book 5 splits up the group in exactly the same way, and it works really well because Holden suddenly *is not* the main character of the story. All the other characters are *so much* more fleshed out by the end of Book 5; they're just as solidly real as Holden and Miller. They also continued Bobbie's plot from a short story, and it works really well this season, too.

Btw, Baltimore entrance at 4:25 is a helicopter shot, into a crane shot and then operator taking it off the crane and catching Wes Chatham walking. As said by showrunner, some articles on this episode, and I think, as far as I remember, Wes Chatham discussed it with Ty Frank on their podcast. So it is a Baltimore shot with some CGI added, but not a lot, so it would still look realistic.

It's interesting that you observe "maybe S4 needed those plotlines for S5 to be this good." As I'm sure the comment sections shared during S4, Crisjen and Bobbie's plotlines weren't a part of that book, I believe, so they were additions to S4 to give those actors something to do. I believe the showrunners openly admitted that it was a "we have the space to tell this part of their stories now, so we did." Their plotlines are effectively the prologue for S5, which gives S5 the breathing room.

One of the great things the story does is in the world building.... They do not have to spell everything else exceptionally. They can paint you a picture just by starting at the edges , giving you a corner here or there..... You know, there's something juicy at the heart, but you can't make it out yet. Then then the pieces start slipping into place and you realize how interconnected everything is. Nope Amos did not always work in space.

For a variety of reasons, the majority of fans seem to consider both season 4 and book 4 to be the weakest. I thought the Bobbie plotline was good, although that mostly comes from a separate novella. I thought you guys were already married...just decided to stay in a Las Vegas honeymoon suite for kicks, huh? Nice count of Chekov's Guns in this episode.

I really liked season 4, and also thought it was a necessary "reset" after the craziness and breakneck pace of season 3. That said, I do understand why some people feel it's a bit disconnected. It doesn't give much about what's happening with Earth, or between Earth and Mars. I think that was intentional since our crew is actually physically disconnected from being in our solar system, but I can see why that made it feel sort of out of place to some people. It's also the first time that the crew is in one place for a long time so that may have something to do with it.

I liked season 1 but I can completely understand why others had an issue, it spent A LOT of time establishing the universe. Seasons 2, 3, and 5 I loved, binged them like candy. 4 was my least favorite, you hit the main reasons why in your own opinions, though I loved the Murtry/Amos stuff especially their fight at the end. Season 6 felt rushed to me but it was so yeah not a strong end. Not terrible but maybe dipped to a 7.

The novel that season 4 was based on is thought to be the weakest of the book series. Also, the politics back on Earth was not part of the novel. I think it was just a way to keep Chrissy somewhat relevant. That wasn't Amos' real brother. Don't know if you thought that. Now that you seen this episode, you should check out the novella "The Churn." SPOILER ALERT for those who might plan to read the novella............................... Timmy and his surrogate "mom" had an intimate relationship.

This show DOES rock! The season 4 book equivalent was better. It's much easier to give out information about things you can't show in print than it is in video. But even then it was the weakest of them all for me.

I also wonder how things would have been different if the series was still on SciFi / SyFy / (whatever its called now). It is hard to just jump onto a series after so many seasons (like when Buffy jumped from WB/CW to UPN), so there is an obligation to do some amount of reintroduction of characters and world-building, to do some hand-holding for Amazon viewers who have to judge if they should go back and watch the first 3 seasons for the first time.
@MattNolanCustom
@MattNolanCustom 7 ай бұрын
@@mmattson8947 the first three seasons were available on Amazon at least a year before S4 dropped. I don't think there was any reintroduction or re-world-building besides the few minutes recap at the beginning of Ep 1.

@@MattNolanCustom There is a difference between an "old" series showing up on a network, and brand new episodes coming out. (Not as big a difference as in the pre-streaming past, but we shouldn't underestimate the novelty factor in what people will decide to watch.) A lot of time the reintroductions are subtle. For the Firefly series, the commentary for "Train Job" mentioned that they found ways to mention titles more often, like "captain", "engineer", or "wife". Bits of commentary or scene development that wouldn't have happened if the episode wasn't treated like a 2nd pilot episode. Not in-your-face, but it still slowed down the pacing.

@@mmattson8947please give a number of examples from the early episodes of Expanse S4 to back up your claim. Thanks.
@mmattson8947
@mmattson8947 7 ай бұрын
@@MattNolanCustom What claim is that? If you look back, I asked "I wonder how things would have been different?", because I don't know how these clever writers approach breaking down a season. Maybe they made different choices than they would have. Maybe they wouldn't. (From your responses, you are thinking they wouldn't.) Since we don't have a "SyFy Season 4" to compare to, I don't know how I would give "examples" to back up "my claim". We know these episodes had to be different for two basic reasons: Amazon dropped all episodes at once (instead of one a week), and the episodes didn't have commercial breaks (like they did for SyFy). In season 3, all episodes were from 42-44 minutes in length. In season 4, they went from 43-53 minutes (much greater variation). I have no idea how significant these effects were on their creative process (maybe little, maybe much), but the production environment was not identical to the previous 3 seasons.

Season 4 felt, disconnected. Everyone was split up. Avasarala was reduced to swearing on earth. They ended on a really high note with Miller showing up but it was definitely the weakest season.
