A similar case to The Star Wars Holiday Special. Keep in mind, there are no subtitles for the Wookies in Star Wars. At least the non-KotOR Wookies, anyway. It's forgivable when people like Han Solo is around to translate the important stuff. But for a majority of the movie, it's just the Wookie family grunting at each other. We can't discern anything from them except their tone, which usually amounts to this: Grandpa: "Grandpa's watching his tittie flicks!" Mama: "Get over here!" Lumpy: "Ain't happenin'" Grandpa: "Is that so? Maybe one night, Grandpa will forget to turn the gas off." Yeah, I know that was a reused joke from Jontron, but hey, it was funny. That's just one problem with SWHS, as well as the ridiculous plot including a 7 minute long step by step instructional video. Like I said, it's more forgivable when the important conversations are translated by someone. For example, in Fifth Element, one of the main characters speaks in an ancient alien language, and only she and few others can understand. She slowly learns to speak English, but when she has something important to say in her language, they at least have someone around who can understand her.

This film had potential. It could've been a light hearted film about a child trying to rescue his mother. Befriending a lost man-child, an alien rebel, and a goofy robot helping him along the way. Along with some better motion capture, and a much nicer main character. I read the book as lot as a kid, so I wanted this film to be good.

At the end of the movie I didn't care about the humans, I just wanted to see the Aliens because A: the babies were cute and B: they looked cool. Wingnut was my favorite but I see him as a loveable idiot. A healthy dose of those is okay for me, I guess. "Flower power" thing was a bit much, and the Supervisor was not that scary of an antagonist.

I know this is something that came out after this movie but I've seen better results from a guy that used Blender from scratch. Even then, the people at ImageMovers did a better job with Beowulf. Aside from that, it looks like The Adventures of Tintin (which was done with Weta Digital) is the only movie I found with motion capture that would be worth my time and that's saying a lot (Sun. 12-15-2019).

The animation can be kind of nice to look at sometimes but it pretty dull looking and the humans look terrible. I think the humans looked their best with this style of animation in The Polar Express. While the humans still looked a little too realistic in that, the rest of the animation looked fantastic. Mars Needs Moms? NO! The only thing in this movie that is KIND OF entertaining is the hippie alien girl. She is a rebel and I do enjoy her curiosity. It does make sense the way she talks is dated, since she learned human speech from something that was dated. She's nothing great, but at least was kind of likable, unlike the rest of the film. The only Disney movie worse than this is Descendants!
