srbarkerchan except the director was actually the grandson of H.G. Wells. Yes,really,I literally searched about the director is the grandson of Wells on Wikipedia,don't judge me about Orson Welles's broadcast of War of the Worlds or the 2005 Spielberg film starring Mr. Some Pinoy-American guy who actually told a smoking weed guy asking asking if he fucked his Scientology hole and Dakota Fanning and narrated by Morgan Gordon Freeman

I remember seeing this movie and feeling really uncomfortable when I was younger, because its ending moral states that a family should have a mother and a father, and that's the way it should be. As a kid with divorced parents who live in separate states across the country, that wasn't a very good feeling for me.
@phastinemoon
@phastinemoon 6 жыл бұрын
I'm betting that the number of divorced/separated parents, single parents, and gay couples across America was enough that they all said 'Eh... let's take the kids to see something else...' and that's why this movie was such a bomb at the box office. Like, if you're gonna have an unpopular opinion, that's one thing, but be prepared for what it's gonna bring you.

Tintin is pretty much the only motion-capture animated movie I like and continue to watch again and again because it had a reason to be animated, Spielberg and Jackson wanted to accurately portray the style of the original books and the character designs, the Zemeckis animated movies mostly have no reason to be animated, you could just make those movies in live action, and virtually nothing will be different (I feel Beowulf was the biggest offender of this).

I remember when I first saw this at my dad's house. I think back then there wasn't much on TV at the time & not really any movies that I was curious enough to watch, expect for this one. So I watched it, and it made me sob and wanna hug my mom. My mom is my best friend since she had raised me but I was visiting my dad for the weekend so I couldn't hug my mom. And I get Nostalgia Critic is saying it's over done, but man the "death to useless mothers" thing was so painful to hear. I was very interested in the main boy of the movie and I was relieved when he was able to save his mom. And I was watching this alone, cause my dad was working on a project of his in the garage. But he did come out at some point and found me crying as the movie was still playing. I think we hugged so I could calm down. I believe I called my mom after the movie ended and just to let her know I loved her and I missed her. That was an emotional movie for me. But I loved the graffiti artist alien. :D She was cool.

Well, motion capture is still being utilized in films today, but this was the last time we saw a film entirely animated in that way. As for why they had Seth Green do the motion work for the kid, he originally recorded all of his lines for the film, but it was later decided that he sounded too old for the age the boy was supposed to be.

This movie was based off of a lovely children's book with the same title. The book was sweet and wonderful and I totally loved it, but like with the Polar Express, it's hard to make an epic movie out of a book that's only 20 pages long and has very little text. Read the book, it's written and drawn by the cartoonist who did 'Opus' and it's beautiful and charming and sad and bitter sweet.

Maybe if the movie wasn't about rebellion or moms and had focus on the 3 main characters (the boy, the man and the graffiti artist alien) having some fun, retro space opera type adventure but with this studio's twist on it, it could have been really good. But I don't think that this sort of anarchy thing is their thing. I haven't seen this film but I have seen Polar Express, which in my opinion is undeniably one of the most underrated movies I have ever seen. My favorite Christmas movie, too. Maybe a second opinion on the story and script and a little more time could have saved this movie.

+Watchman5 The Polar Express is a brilliant film and very underrated, like you said. Definitely one of my favourite Christmas Movies. I have never seen this film. The trailer really didn't give anything away. I know you can't just a book by it's cover, but I've never heard one good thing about this. I agree with what you say. It seems good on paper, but it just doesn't seem like it's executed well.

Actually Seth Green was going to be the main kid also as a voice role, but for unknown reasons at the last minute, they swapped him out with a kid actor. You can still hear his lines in the marketing like the trailer

I always thought the kid in this movie looked SUPER creepy because of Seth Green's face on that tiny little body. Like a grown man's expressions and face just....placed on a child. It was creepy then and it's creepy now.

I think one thing I really don't like about this, based on what I've seen from this video, is that the human character designs just looks so bad. The aliens don't look so bad because, you know, they're actually supposed to be weird looking, but the humans just look really bad to me. Especially the chubby guy. It's like they tried too hard in particular to make him more realistic than he needed to be, so he doesn't even blend in well with the other characters. And it's not just because of motion capture either because I actually really liked the designs of Polar Express. Sure there were a few hiccups with it being a movie that came out far earlier than this one, but they were pleasant enough. But yeah, I can't really say if this is a good or bad thing that we're probably not going to see motion capture works like this again because on one hand, while they could be entertaining, it's not really a medium I especially cared for.

In some countries, the movie is called "Milo and Mars". For the US release, they should have called it "Help! My Mom Has Been Kidnapped By Martians!" in cheesy 50's B-Movie writing.

I loved the idea of this motion-capture tech, sort of like a more modern Rotoscoping, but every movie they made with it was garbage. It wasn't the tech itself, it's what they chose to do with it that was awful.

+hal900x Agreed. I've seen WoW advertisement for another expansion with more realistic looking graphics, and those characters are usually not even human. (though granted, their cinematic shorts are incredible. so disappointed they aren't doing a whole movie in that caliber) It's a total shame when everyone looks like they should be real, but are very clearly not so. It makes them feel soulless. Looking at the cover, the boys eyes and the moms eyes are almost a copy and paste of each other. That's not what humans look like. Hell, even in taxidermy or uncanny valley the eyes look a little different. The story was creepy and depressing and all the characters looked like it too.

AS much as this studio has its issues, motion capture would be amazing if they used it more in 3D animated movies, as it would allow them to use ACTUAL facial movements, instead of just having to guess which can create some really jarring glitches.

Critic! You keep using the "we've seen this before" argument on KIDS movies. Kids have not lived long enough to watch every movie in the world. And they certainly should not have been watching a bunch of R-rated dystopian sci-fi films to the point they are bored of a little grim setting. I have the same beef with your Monsters U. review. "It's just Animal House, or any college movie really." Well pretty much every college-life movie is rated R, so the audience it was geared for is getting their first "Animal House" type experience. I see this as a good thing.
@phastinemoon
@phastinemoon 6 жыл бұрын
His argument isn't just "We've seen this before", but "We've seen this before, done better, and this isn't doing anything original, different, or noteworthy that you can't just say 'Go see the other films that did it better'." And, yes, even for kids films -- there were kids films from the 80s and 90s that had, not just the same story, but the same LOOK. Like, the design of the aliens isn't really unique, or their ships or the world -- it's just sort of generic and bland. And, in this case -- it's actually detrimental to give this an upgrade because, when the novelty of this film wears off, there's nothing else there. Other films like it at least have a point, or good writing, or memorable characters. This is just... generic -- like he said, everything exists just so... it can be there. Compare that to TRON, which is stylistically unique and is trying to convey a message. Or the Hunger Games, as he mentions, which has an actual real-world allegory, and allows for the grim, disturbing emotions to have weight and impact instead of just to be grim for the sake of being grim. And to say nothing of what 'Mars Needs Moms' concludes about it's story (I'll bet a lot of single parents had an uncomfortable talk with their kids on the way out of the theatres for this one)

So, I know that Disney and Robert Zemeckis' studio, basically did it to themselves, but... gee, thanks Doug for bursting my bubble, I kept wondering what the next thing that studio was going to put out would be, and why nothing since... (A Christmas Carol) honestly, I did not know this was one of their films until this video, and I didn't even know it was a Disney film until recently. Anyway, I remember seeing this after buying it on DVD back when it first came out available on DVD, and I still like it to this day.
