This Marseille part was fun. As I have lived in Marseille for 1.5 years, in Northern France near Lille for a year, and been visiting Nice & Antibes for 20 years. Marseille I can dearly suggest for living with kids. Rents are reasonable, weather is excellent, people are friendly towards foreigners as a big portion of the people there originate from abroad. And the situation has been like that for thousands of years, already. Quality of food is high, and the prices are still quite low. From Arab markets in Noailles you will find the most fresh ingredients around the world. And from the French bakeries, the best (and clearly different tasting) baquettes and croissants to enjoy. Busses take to you to the beaches, which are seven in the city. Ferries take you to the islands in front of the city. I could move back.

I spent a week in Marseille last 3rd week of June. One of my nephews is in graduate school in Marseille. I loved it! It has so much character, and I experienced the most friendly people! When people heard my English accent when trying to speak French, they would switch to English. Also, others would check it, to see if we needed help communicating. Funny, because my French nephew said people don’t speak English there. He was wrong. Hehe! It reminds me a lot of Lisbon. I met many Portuguese and Brazilians there. They just had a garbage strike, so there was trash piling up. If it weren’t France, I could live there. My nephews and their friends kept me out until 3, but through 2 am, I saw women walking on their own. I wouldn’t be out that late in the US. Marseille is very brown, and I think there’s a bias against minorities. I also heard, it’s not as bad as it’s been in the past.

Awesome! Thanks for sharing. We found the level of English there a mixed bag, but it was okay. The quote of the day is "If it weren't France, I could live there" because we can really resonate with that.

I’ve always enjoyed France, but the police are too present for my comfort. They also target minorities, very heavily. I saw it happen with the sanitation workers on strike, in June. There was a police van for each sanitation worker. They were only quietly picketing. That reminded me, it was still France.

I'm an EU citizen. I've been living in the Netherlands for 6 years. Think about coming to a big city in France. Paris is extremely cool (I've been there a couple of times), but cold winters scary me a bit (almost like here in the Netherlands 🥶). Is Marseille also a good option?🤔

Very good info, thanks. I will use this video with my students who are arriving in Marseilles in September from various parts of the world. It'll be a good intro to the city and I'll ask them if they too "would expat Marseilles?" (too late!!! They've done it already done it!!! At least for a year....)

As someone who has lived in Marseille for over 20 years I do get concerned when people keep on about the "danger aspect",if you go looking for it you will find it. In the housing estates in the north of the city drug dealing and violence are very common place, so you dont go looking for it!! Pickpockets are more common in Paris, street crime is generally not a big worry, and we have had one breakin to our building in 20 years. Weighing that against a good climate, the benefits of being on the coast ,with easy access to the Riviera, and great affordable restaurants ,we like it.
