Whoever chose these women for this performance understood the assignment! Kelly, being very soulful and tamed. Then Marsha gave me Arabian nights with those runs and note slips. Jilly from PHILLY gave footpath cafe jazz LEGEND, and Ledisi closed it DOWN giving powerhouse straight outta the French Quarters of Louisiana #IconicPerformance

Each voice was perfect for the character they were portraying and gave the right amount of drama for the lines they had and the story they were telling. Marsha's voice is unique and it absolutely fit IMO - Everyone singing in the same style would be boring and defeat the purpose.

I haven’t gotten this performance out of my head since the first time it premiered. Everyone did absolutely amazing with narrating their stories, but Ledisi blew me away. Her closing line (“my name is Peaches”) had such a chilling and triumphant tone to it. It’s almost as if, through Peaches’ anger, she redeemed each of the women and their stories. It’s like she was determined to not be consumed by the labels/stereotypes they put on her. Ledisi brought Peaches to life.

Have this in my playlist! As every woman represented is relatable to some sort of degree. We’ve come from lineage of humble Aunt Sara’s who did what she had to survive and raise her children and the Masters too. We have the Saffronia’s who were caught between 2 worlds..loved, privileged and adored and hated at the same time. Sweet Things learned or taught to hustle and use their bodies because the black woman has always been hyper sexualized since slavery, molested by men in the family or men of the cloth, raped by the Master, and forced to be breeders. Peaches is the rebel who at some point takes a stand and no longer want to be victimized. Peaches is dangerous and can help lead a revolution! We are all these women to some degree! Nina did the hell out of this song!!

This was one powerful ass performance beginning to end. I'm a fan of all these ladies. Kelly delivers of course, Jill brings all her sentry, amazing vocal skills and Ledisi killed it if course with her ridiculous vocal range & attitude (my brother worked at the Paradise Theatre at the time where this took place & said this was the 2nd take cuz the audience went too crazy 4 tv after her) but Marsha. Marsha's voice is unmatched with her vocal ability while she yodels. I can go on & on but I'll just say her albums can be listened to all the way thru & to see her live is a treat.

When I first saw this I almost jumped out of my seat. When you listen to the original and Nina gets to the "my name is Peaches" and her voices breaks - it gives you CHILLS!!! So Ledisi KNEW what she had to do when she shut it down and she did NOT disappoint. All of them were PERFECT. And don't get it twisted Kelly and Jill could have done Peaches, proud too, but I love how they sang their parts exactly the way they should have and didn't just try to outdo each other. They definitely should have posted this long time ago! Each of them fit the part and they sing differently but emote the story well, in their own jazzy way. Love the grit and contempt Jill sang “Sweet Thang” during her, fitting so well with the words in her parts, and then the sorrow she sang it when they all resang their names. Kelly was clean, intentional yet soulful. Marsha knows when to cry out with emotion, can feel the pain of Saffronia’s words with her voice. And Ledisi, killed it! Blunt and powerful just like Peaches. Loved it all. Also shout out to the camera and lighting staff. The camera under-pan to Ledisi when the light revealed her was perfect.

In my humble opinion, each woman “looks” like the women described in Nina Simone’s lyrics!❤️💚🖤✊🏾

Ledisi was the only original singer from the For Colored Girls Soundtrack that sang Four Women live. I love this version. Good picks. They all killed it. Especially with the harmonies!

I knew Jill was going to murder this! I wish she would put out a jazz album! Marsha has such a unique voice that I think it’s hard for her to sing certain songs. Kelly is not a jazz singer so I don’t think she was in her element. LEDISI THOUGH…chiiilllleee!!!! What she did was unacceptable in the best way lol! How dare she confuse my senses! I didn’t know whether to cry, shout, or run to freedom land! Powerful!!! 🤯

Oh my goodness I could not agree anymore I love Jill Scott she did amazing job she’s my favorite artist of this generation and I feel a jazz album would be perfect I also agree with you on Marsha I feel her voice is unique that it doesn’t work for all songs but I do feel this song was actually a good fit for her but I have other people were said she sounds like she can’t seem but to me it’s just based off of what song she is singing.

I think they were all in their element. Each person did vocally what their character embodied. Each choice made sense.

Whoever was responsible for producing and identifying each vocalist for each part did an amazing job! Each vocalist embodied the pure essence of each verse telling the story (vocally) in a manner that was intoxicating and believable. What passion and conviction each one sang with! You could close your eyes and just feel each word through their vocal interpretation…simply OUTSTANDING!!!🎤🎤🎤🎤🎤
