i have one of these amps. here is how i went about buying it: i have a neighbor who has recently gotten into playing guitar. he also has plenty of money so he just buys whatever, whenever. well, i was over one day helping him to learn something on a guitar because he needs someone to help him learn. well, he had one of these as50d amps. i never heard one and didnt even know marshall made an acoustic amp. i went ahead and plugged my acoustic into it (just a Yamaha A1M since its a good sounding guitar for the money) and i heard the best acoustic sound i have ever heard before. i knew i wanted one myself and in that moment, i had only played three chords through it. once i got home maybe two hours later, after finishing up helping neighbor out, i went and ordered one. i had to. especially after seeing the gordon giltrap demo of it on the marshall youtube channel. the problem was that the cheapest i could find it for new at the time was for $499.... i have had it now for about a year and it has been great. it has everything i could want in an acoustic amp in a somewhat small-ish single unit. i have heard sounds come out of my as50d so beautiful i had to stop to listen and let it last as long as i could. maybe it was the right sound at the right moment? i dont know. either way, i like that when you get onto the guitar, since its still a marshall, it has a nice bite, in typical marshall fashion....all that being said, i have never used another acoustic amp, so i really dont have an irl comparison to match it against. if i had to guess though, based on what ive heard recorded over the years, this really is a great acoustic amp without having to go 100w

Dominick, this is the best overall review I've seen. This amp is one of 8 different amps I use and you coverage of the pros, cons, and features is right on track. I use this amp from time to time with my vintage 70s Fender strat since I am not an acoustic guy. It's a great amp. Definitely agree with your comments about the grill cloth and pedal.

Good review. I searched for many acoustic guitar amps within this price range and the Marshall AS50D seems to be the best of them. Every feature makes a lot of sense and the people at Marshall clearly gave it a lot of thought, which I wouldn't have expected from a company that's known for their hard rockin' electric guitar amps. This thing is perfect for small venues and even for bigger venues, you could still use the DI and use it as a monitor. However, I do think this is a budget amp. I understand you wrote it a couple of years ago, but at the moment this amp goes for a laughable price of €299,- That's cheap. Certainly for what you get, a versatile and good sounding acoustic guitar amp. So that cover? It's not that much extra. And I don't really need a footswitch for a reverb or a chorus. Once you use reverb, you'll never switch it off anyway. And for what it's worth, I'd probably use the send and return to add my Neunaber Immerse Reverberator, a Keeley 30ms Double Tracker (for chorus like sounds - check it out), my Aphex Aural Exciter/Big Bottom, and a small clean booster pedal. I mean, these pedals cost me a lot more than that amp. Hell, I could buy two or three of them for that money, hahaha.... Off course I had (and still have) these pedals for my electric rig. I'm not an acoustic guitar player. Well, I'm going to be. For some songs anyway. So this is the perfect amp for me in every way. And thank you for this review. You convinced me of the fact that I was right all along. I give myself three months to purchase one (they make a beautiful green limited edition version as well, same price. I might go for that one, if they still have them by then). Anyway, thanks again! :-) Man, why can't I ever keep my comments short?!?!

Good review. I just picked one up today. A couple of points. The EQ does appear to route to the DI and Line Out. Makes sense for the small gigs that this amp is designed for where you are controlling your own sound. If you are running it into a FOH system, you're going to be annoying your sound man. Fortunately it sounds pretty good with the settings close to noon. I can't see needing to adjust it much once you have it dialed in. Second point, the lack of a Mid EQ was the thing that caused me to hesitate. However the anti-feedback Notch control gives you a 10dB cut at a selectable frequency between 80hZ and 1kHz, so it does give you some tone-shaping capability in addition to its primary function. As you point out, it is a bassier sounding amp. I'd advise someone considering it to try it out with the guitar you're going to be using. If you've got a really warm sounding Martin or a boomy dreadnaught, expect to be dialing back the bass a lot. I'm playing a very bright sounding Taylor and like the depth that the Marshall gives. I tried out the Fishman Mini too. It's a nice sounding amp, but it just sounded smaller. The twin speakers was what really won me over on the Marshall.

Can anyone verify the model of "custom" Celestions are in it? Saw a review elsewhere that the buyer opened it to find two totally unlabeled speakers inside. The other 'badge engineered' versions of the Marshall AS50R [original version had spring reverb, vs the AS50D with digital reverb]... anyhoo, the other versions of the 50 watt AS50R are known as 60 watt AC60R amps, by "Fame" primarily in Europe I think, and by Megatone/Mega, and by Sam Ash's house brand, Guitar Research. I have the Guitar Research AC60R version of the Marshal AS50R, and it has Megatone speakers inside. I thought maybe that was the only difference: The Marshall has Celestions, but the others have Megatone speakers made in Korea. But, now I wonder if the Marshall has unlabeled speakers because they're just made in Korea or China to Celestion specs.... anyone able to verify the speakers in their Marshalls?
@rusty03035 жыл бұрын
The Fishman mini, at low volume, sounds a bit more naturally acoustic than the Marshall, but the 2x8" stereo in the marshall vs 1x6" mono for the fishman mini means at mid- and high volume, the Marshall is better. If you're also singing through it, there is no comparison. The Marshall is 10x better for vocals. Plus the marshall has features you have to step up to the 'artist' to get in the fishman.

How much (if any) would a thicker grill/speaker cover affect the tone on the amp, especially the higher frequencies? 3. Would you buy this amp again? Thanks!
@DominickArena10 жыл бұрын
Hello amd thanks for watching! To anwswer your questions The mid eq wasn't that important to me since I have a 5 Band EQ on my Acoustic. I do have a Mid EQ on my Fishman Artist and it is nice to scoop the mids out once in awhile to get a Darker tone. As far as Grills go. Yes...the thicker the grill can mute it slightly. Running a thick weave so to speak. BUT my Fishman has a really nice Grill Cloth thats sturdy (Medium Density Weave) I like it alot. No muting. I just don't like the "Panty Hose" covering Marshall decided to use on this amp. As far as buying it again I'd have to say No. I like the amp don't get me wrong but experience some probs. I devolped a harsh rattle from 2 knobs buzzing in the amp chassis. It couldn't be fixed. They had to replace the whole unit for me. Also the Chorus effect needs to be Subtle otherwise it saturated my tone. Other than that the build qaulity it great and is good for small gigs. I picked up a Fishman Artist and thats my main Gig Amp. 120 watts bi-amped 100 to the speak 20 to the tweeter Loud!!! - lighter than Marshall by 10 lbs Phantom power for Condenser pickups amd mics 8 effects built in that blend well I absolutely love The Artist! BUT remeber its $150 more than the AS50D. So if money is not an issue I highly recommend The Loidbox Artist. But still recommend the Marshall over the Fishman Mini :-)

Great video Dominick. Im totally going to buy this amp for my classical guitar soon after watching your review. Question though: since I have a piezo pickup with XLR connection, how could I go though my pedal effects that do not have an XLR input and 48V phantom power? I understand that the FX loop on the back of the amp is for pedal effects with the typical 1/4 inch jack, but what is the solution for pedals that I want to connect in the front (in the line between my guitar and the amp before reaching the microphone channel with the XLR connection)?, sust as a volume/expression pedal, compressor etc? Thanks.

Can you hook up a external speaker(Marshall 4X12 cabinet) on this amp and where would you connect it to?
@DominickArena10 жыл бұрын
Hey how's it going. This amp doesn't have an external speaker out like most electric guitar amps do. It wouldn't sound right playing thru your Marshall 4×12 cab because those have Guitar speakers which have a freq response of usually around 7000hz. Where acoustic speakers have either full range speakers up to 20k hz or run tweeters. These amps have a mix out which can be ran to the house PA.

Thanks for the comment. No changes that I know of. And yes its a great amp for the money. I have upgraded to the Fishman Pro since then but it's double the price. For under $400 the Marshall is tough to beat

Is this Lars Ulrich giving a guitar amp review? Great review. Have had one oaf these for a few years really like it. Only problem I have is using it while gigging. The D.I. on the back running into a mixer at the front of the house always creates a hum. The dreaded 50cycle hum. Any idea how to eliminate aside from using the same power source.

HypnotistDougT I had this problem too. I don't use this amp anymore live and use a Fishman Artist for Live Gigs and have nothing but good things to say bout the Artist amp. Great great amp

Just picked one up for 50 bucks. Reverb doesn't work. But it will take a Reverb pedal I figured ❤️
