As a 2203 nutter I have a JMP, a 4010 combo, JCM2003 reissue, Kerry King JCM800. They all sound killer. Between components tolerance shifts, components and tube wear it's hard to really pinpoint where the small difference in tone originate from.

Thanks for uncovering another hidden gem, Johan. Sonically I prefer the JMP a little fot its clarity and bite, but the JCM is very close indeed. Wonder if it's just parts tolerance, different bright cap or something else responsible for the difference.

Johan and R9 is the right input for any Marshall! JMP for me: My type of sound, and it has a punch that I didn't hear in the JCM. I also think the JMP has better tone separation, or "clarity". The JCM had a more aggressive sound, when pushed. One their own they are both great amps, though. Different dialects, with the same roots. Thanks again Johan, and Happy New Year!

Happy new year Johan. I knew about them , because I had one during the 2010s. JCM 800 model 1987. Mine was made about '86 I think because it had the PCB mounted pots etc. 50 watts. I had it returned to stock by a tech, but it would not do the Plexi thing. Most do though. Mine was just a bit oddball for some reason. Very nice clean, but very high headroom and the breakup was not so Plexi sounding. Some of them have massive amounts of classic sounding crunch though. I know more about amps now due to channels like this and several others. I wonder if its 'stock' form was Superbass or something, so that's why it would not do the snarling kerrang Plexi thing. The tech could have also missed a component that was out of spec or something. It happened at Marshall sometimes, plus they get modded and messed with etc. I bought that amp and some other stuff with my refund from my new Randy Rhoads 1959RR amp that blew up pretty good after just a week. :( In 2014 I sold all my music gear to go chasing after a woman on the other side of the planet. Doh. I flew from NZ to Canada to set up an apartment on the US border just 20 mins drive from my new fiance. We got married but not long after her mother convinced her I was a Russian spy (even Russians think I am Russian for some reason). Seriously. I still have the emails of the mother in law accusing me. Family in NZ convinced me to immediately return to NZ in late 2016. I had zero guitars, amps, or pedals etc. Doh! I have finally rebuilt the hoard and exceeded it. A clone Plexi is my amp now. I run it into a Power Station. I am liking the new gadget though. A Friedman IR-X. Great for home use into DAW at lower volumes. It reminds me of Iron Maiden live and 'the moral of this story is not what to do when a bird...." 🤣 P.S. I think it may have been my instincts driving me. A last ditch second effort at another marriage in my 40s to not make my Dad 'extinct in the male line' like he used to joke before passing in 2022 (his Italian family tree stuff).

Very interesting. They were surprisingly (to me) close. I wonder if the difference was slightly different circuit design, component age, different suppliers of components, component tolerance "stacking" or some combination of those factors? Most of the difference seemed to be that the JCM800 was darker than the JMP and the JMP seemed to distort a little more. Nice video.

@@JohanSegeborn Due to internet forum tone dogma, I was expecting the JCM800 to sound like ass and the JMP to sound super-awesome, but that didn't turn out to be the case. Each has strengths and weaknesses. I might possibly even prefer the JCM800--it sounded smoother and beefier and might be slightly better as a platform for pedals. (Or maybe not, only in-person experimentation would really tell.)

Great comparison Johan. The 800s run slightly less plate voltage, and I think this is what's responsible for the more spongy tone. Ian Moss (Cold Chisel) used one of these 800 superleads for years (still does sometimes). His tone has always been amazing. In particular his solo stuff in the 80s. I think they're a hidden gem amp that no one really knows about.
@zachariahwade8482

He used a stock 74 Superlead in the early days. When I used to play Strats I was obsessed with his tone on the Your 13 live EP and bought a stock 74 Superlead but didn’t have an attenuator so had to run it clean(but still very loud) and out of all the Mossy tones the only one I could get close to was that spanky cleanish sound on Tuckers Daughter. I assume that was the 800 Superlead era(though he also used Fender Twins in the studio) I got most of the info on the 74 JMP out of an Australian Guitarist magazine interview about 15 years ago but I’ve seen it online. Such a shame there’s not much info on his gear(or any of the big Aussie bands of the era)

Thanks! I thought it was the other way around regarding plate voltage. Many of my JMP MK2 amps are from 1977 though
@scottdunn2178
@scottdunn2178 Жыл бұрын
Incorrect. Plate voltage is the same... it's the power supply on post-1985 JCM 100w models; they went from 6 to 3 electrolytic capacitors in an order to cut corners and save costs. This accounts for the "spongier" feel... the power supply isn't recovering as quickly. An 800 converted back to original 6 cap specs is punchier and has more balls and faster transient response.

Awesome work Johan! I just picked up a 1990 year 4 input JCM 800 Super Lead. It has been modded with a master volume. It has giant Mallory filter caps and 6550s. It sounds nothing like the one you are playing in this video or my old JCM 800 2203. It is very gainy and dark. It also does not clean up like a normal Marshall, perhaps because of the mods and old General Electric 6550s. I am loving it for the uniqueness but want the chime of a not-modded Marshall with EL34s. Any feedback would be much appreciated...THANKS!

Not that my opinion matters but, to me the 76 has that Frehley sound and sounds better when playing more nuanced chords or when there is a lot going on or you are picking often. It allows the intricacies of the notes be more transparent and would really work well in a live setting cutting through the band. The 87 sounds better with less complex changes and held chords. It sounds fuller and helps not sound thin when there isn’t much going on. Most people like this because they are used to practicing alone without a bass player or drums filling in the lower end. Either way they both sound good and would have their uses in certain mixes. Thanks Johan and have a Happy and Healthy New Year my friend. 🎸🤘🏻

Johnny Ramone favoured the JCM 800 era 1959 Superleads in the 80’s and early 90’s, as seen on the cover of Loco Live (1991)

By 87, Marshall had reduced the number of filter caps in the 100W models from 5 to 3, which some say had a negative impact on the tone. FWIW, I do prefer the sound of the JMP in this clip (a pre-84 JCM might be a closer match)

BOTH were alm identical in terms of clipping character, the '76 had a bit more mid range punch than the '87, apart from that, very little in it, assuming you kept the same/similar settings on both amps! \m / Ha ett gott nytt år!

The 87' likely has stiffer filtering and/or negative feedback, but they are otherwise * surprise * the same

I think the main difference is that they run on a higher voltage making them firmer

Same circuit so they're going to be close. The difference could be the tubes or valves if you prefer that terminology.

The JMP has an attack character that punches you in the face. The JCM seems, a bit more mellow. To me it sounds more like a power amp difference than a preamp component change.

That poor little tuner was hanging on for dear life for a while! As for the amps, I think I prefer the JMP by a small fraction - it has just a little more balls.

The JMP sounds more “honest”… if that is a metric ; ) The JCM is still kinda ok but already steering towards that infamous Marshall mush of the later era in which the amps have less and less definition, no string-separation, no good clean tone (if any at all!) and no presence while still sounding terribly harsh. I’m really not a fan of the later M stuff. Worst amp I’ve ever played was a JCM900. Man, that amp stank, haha. …Nothing beats a Black Flag!
