Very Marshall type sound in a tiny package - great for us bedroom axe warriors ! With so many choices around including modelling amps I can't help but feel that a back to basics setup forces people to concentrate on learning how to get the sounds they want from their fingers rather than continually playing with software and controls. Shame it does not work for those like me with a lack of talent :) .

Same boat! I correct people who call me a player and stress that I am a "practicer". I want a small tube amp but am having trouble finding one in my budget so i'm watching this video. I don't want a lab experiment like Katana (the store guy is pushing it on me). Might use an overdrive pedal with this but otherwise just me and the guitar. Also, wife works at home (permanent now0 so I have to keep it down. Small amps for me. Obviously, I won't need gig volume.

You are pretty much the only person I've found on KZbin who actually did this amp justice. EDIT: I ended up buying one and I absolutely love it. It's surprisingly versatile, sounds amazing on clean, etc etc. I may eventually do a review myself if I can find the time/energy

I and my friends used to make fun of these for sounding terrible, based on the number of kids butchering "Iron Man" and "Smoke on the Water" on these in guitar shops. In hindsight, the problem may have been the kids... It sounds positively massive when you play it! Great demo!

Well said. "I can't help but feel that a back to basics setup forces people to concentrate on learning how to get the sounds they want from their fingers rather than continually playing with software and controls". I just bought this amp for my Granddaughter for exactly that reason, Played 3 other amps in the shop and as soon as I plugged this in I knew that's what I was looking for.

Sounds absolutely fine to me. I have an older MG15 DFX which I really like. There's just something about it. I think guitar players are spoilt these days with the choice of amplification, but I think there's alot to be said for a straightforward solid state amp with simple controls.

From Leo: I have an MG 15 DFX from a few years back. The little speaker really holds the amp back. I added a speaker jack that cuts out the internal speaker when plugging in an remote 8 ohm speaker. It is pretty impressive when the amp is hooked to a quality 12 inch cabinet. I do not love everything in the MG line, but they got the little 15 watt amplifier right.

A Marshall MG15 was my first amp, I've had a bit of a love/hate relationship with the drive channel over the many years I've owned but it was a really solid clean channel and takes pedals well, plus my one has a real spring reverb unit in which blows my mind these days considering how many amp companies won't even put a real spring reverb in their higher end stuff.

They are a great little amp, powerful for their size & as robust as they come. I've actually had one for much longer than I've been a guitarist (I bought my first guitar for Xmas) You see, they also make a better-than-acceptable harmonica amp with the right mic... I love mine!

A good trick with these cheap solid state Marshalls is to disconnect the speaker and hook it up to some good speakers! Still, these MGs sound much better than the one I bought for practice like 15 years ago. There's a recognizable 'plexiness" to the tone!

I have an MG15CDR that I bought years ago when the power switch was still square and not round. Very good amp. It also has an FDD button that made it more dynamic. When I dialed it in to my liking by lowering the treble and gain a bit. Sounds pretty sweet.

I've had this amp since I started (the silver one which is basically the same) and I tell you it's not impossible to get some great tones out of it, I like it with the treble at like 2/3 mid slightly past 12o clock and the bass at like 11 in the clean channel, and in the crunch channel I mostly use high gain at around like 2/3 with treble being at 3/4, mid at 12, bass slightly past 12

well it op amp and diode distortion. op amp very high fi chips which lack the miller effect. the miller effect which fets and tubes do round off a square wave. how ever a tube amp will sound solid statish if it is a high gain amp.

Couldn’t help going back to that gain channel one more time with your Tele, eh? I don’t blame you. Sounds awesome. That Marshall sound is so unique that it’s probably worth the money to have it around, especially in such a small package. Trying to decide between this and the Orange Crush 20RT and any others I can find in the non-modeling category for under $200.

I kept my MG15CFX. Despite all the hate online, it really isn't a bad amp once the speaker is broken in and you learn how to dial in some basic tones. Mine let you have reverb plus one other effect either Chorus, Phaser, Flanger, Delay, Octave. So it was quite versatile even without pedals. I sometimes wonder if an upgraded speaker would have improved it, one of those 10" greenbacks might have fit in the largish cabinet. Quite a lot of stigma on these amps, but I think there is a reason why they haven't been discontinued with the arrival of newer Marshalls. They really aren't that bad for practice, good even, if you don't mind only having 4 presets in the case of the FX version.

Last week I opened it and found that it actually has a small plastic spring reverb tank, not a digital one on PCB, so be careful with handling because I had some problems with squealing in the past because one spring fell off from the tank. Anyway it sounds more pleasant to me compared to a digital reverb in a friend's Boss amplifier.

These amps have gotten a raw deal over the years... mainly due to 2 things - 1) the crappy speakers the manufacturer sticks in the low-priced product, and 2) since they are usually owned by beginners due to the low cost, they obviously don't know how to dial in an amp worth a shit(and are probably using a lower priced guitar as well)! An advanced player, in this case Shane, has no problem getting a perfectly decent sound out of the line. If it sounds good, it is.

@perival9547
@perival9547 4 жыл бұрын
This was almost my exact rig a few months ago, and I found it perfect as a starter pack ! Super versatile and trusty. You've got enough to play whatever you want with a pretty good sound. The Squier is very well built and comfortable to play, while the amp has just what you need to begin and learn, with the coolest look and sound you can get at this price. The audio input and headphone output are awesome for bedroom playing, they don't sound very good but they're playable. I have the MG15FX version with some built in effects (chorus, delay etc.), and 4 channels (clean, crunch and 2 overdrive levels). Not much more expensive but you can control the distortion much better than the basic 2-channel and its brutal gain. Both the guitar and amp are definitely benchmarks in their price range, so if that's your taste go for it ;)
