Oh, man! KILLER video!!! This is probably the best demo of the Vintage/Modern on KZbin. Your explanation of how the Detail and Body controls work is something that nobody ever really gets right, but you nailed it. The range of tones you got really showcases how versatile this amp is. If there is another single channel amp out there that can cover as much tonal ground as the VM, I’ve never seen it! You were clearly having fun playing and it and I was equally enjoying hearing it!! Plus….you riffed out some “Kiss of Death” AND some Loudness! WELL DONE!!!! 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘

@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
Thank you Mr. Dawson! Coming from you that means everything to me! Ya know, I don't get why/how the VM could be so misunderstood. Operation is basically the same as a 1959/JTM45. I'd never used a 4 hole Marshall when I bought my VM, it still took literally minutes to wrap my head around it and then I was mystified by the sounds I was achieving. This is also my first KT66 amp. I love EL34s but now I'm curious how my EL equipped amps would sound with KT66's. Thanks again Steve, and thank you for such an amazing amp design. I hope to find a way to get an Astoria head in here so I can give it the same video treatment. Thank you for watching!

I love amps that nobody cares nor understand them. This is probably the best Marshall amp since JCM800. Steve Dawson made a genius amp! High profile guitar players at some point used them live: Jeff Beck, Paul Gilbert, Slash, Doug Aldrich, Robin Trower... Maybe the market wasn't prepared for this kind of product. The kind of market that uses the volume knob as the main piece of gear! Marshall consider making one in the Studio Series. Who knows? I'm biased; I have one and will never ever sell it! Just need a place to connect to a proper 4x12 and Rock!!! Is it the best amp? No, it's not. But is one of the best amps! Amazing video, well explained and very educative. Thanks!

I bought the 50W cab version 2nd hand about 10 years ago for what was a bargain at that time. This is the most understated amp in the entire Marshall range. It is my sound and it's so versatile. Its cleans are dreamy, its crunch is dirty, it's overdrive just kicks you in the guts. It takes pedals on the front end and it takes effects in its preamp loop really really well. So much so, I sold all my other amps. This is the only amp I use. Great review, Steve. Nailed it.

Exactly. My expierence is - i've had this amp once, 100w head. thought it was not enough "marshally", i just couldn't hit desired "authentic" tones, so i sold it. I have recently sold a 1976 Super Bass head and replaced it with a 50w VM (My studio needed some upgrades!), but I don't regret it at all! Something very important is the speakers. At the moment I'm using a 4x12" Jimi Hendrix limited edition with special Greenbacks in it, but it also sound awesome with the other 1960 I own, with normal Greenbacks. I haven't tested it yet with my third 1960 loaded with V30s, I'm very curious to hear what it sounds like. Great with my TS9 or other Tube Screamer-type OVDs I own. Great Vintage Modern video, Steve! I have never played through one. I love those clean tones near the beginning. (Nice Tele, BTW!). Those overdrive tones were amazing as well. Killer tone. Of course, I love those Loudness, Lynch, Jake E. Lee, Whitesnake tones as well. I especially loved the “Kiss Of Death”and “High Wire” tones. I really enjoyed this video. I watched it twice. Killer lead tone at the 12:50 mark with the Maxon OD. That amp is oozing with tones. Of course, with a master musician like you rocking it! Keep these videos coming!

@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
Thank you for your kind words! Which pedal, the Maxon/Tube Screamer? I do crank the level all the way up and usually keep the drive knob low or all the way off. The pedal pictured in the video is just a random stock photo of it, mostly as a visual cue. My pedals are velcroed on top of a rack in the corner that's both hard to get to with a camera as well as not being well lit to it's pretty hard to get a good shot. I was not familiar with this amp until I saw your post on Marshall forum, but based on what I've seen and heard in these two vids, this one is now on my radar. I tend towards Hiwatts, and this appears to be a Marshall that sits between Hiwatt and JCM...so something I am very interested in trying. Subscribed.

@samuelsmith4494Ай бұрын
@@TheGuitarNerdShow In a nutshell, Hiwatt preamps do not appreciably distort at any volume setting, and when cranked, all distortion is from the power amp. So held notes/chords decay into chime instead of decaying into less preamp buzz. Vastly different feel and style.

Wonderful demo, world class! Is the mic clean or going through a colored preamp, transistor or compression? Also, for those clean edge of break up Hendrixy tones, is it real loud (rock drum kit loud, or neighbours hating you loud?) Let's say is it viable for raunchy cleans barely touching break up when you live in a detached house with neighbours next door? Apparently the cleans are a bit shallow on low volume, would love your opinion. PS: Great video, many thanks.
@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
Thank you for your kind words! The mics are running directly to my Universal Audio X8P interfaces. No external preamps, nor are there any preamp color plugins. No EQ either - just raw mic signal. Delay and Reverb added in post. It's loud. I haven't experimented much with lower volume playing, for me it seems the amp opens up around 6 on the master volume. It's a 100 watt tube amp so, yeah it's loud LOL, but I too live in a house with close neighbors. Thus fan I'm not getting complaints but it's not because they can't hear it, believe me LOL!!!! You would make any amp to sound good. Still I am with you regarding VM. My favorite amplifier. There is though another trick that it can do: super clean sound in Low Dynamic Range. It can be achieved even with Les Paul.
@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
That is really kind of you to say - thank you! If you watch through the video, that's where I started - nice clean sound in LDR. Best clean Marshall tone I've ever heard! Thank you for watching!

The VM is a cool concept. I think it was buried behind the popularity of the flagship JVM (which has endured), also the rise of smaller "giggable" amps and digital technology. The VM really seems to require / deserve a space to be cranked.

Nice demo too - great tones & playing.

I had one of these and it was great. Wish I had kept it. However I found it was really a one channel amp. You needed to set it up as either a one channel amp and use pedals or a rock amp. I do think once that is understood it is a great setup.
@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
Yeah, I do wish 2-channel functionality was feasible, but for what it is, it's an amazing sounding amp! Thank you for watching!

I see you have what looks like a JVM in there. Would love to see a comparison between the Vintage Modern and JVM to see if the JVM can cop some of the VM tones.
@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
That’s a great idea! I’ll be honest, I haven’t had much success on the JVM other than on the OD1 channel but I haven’t put in as much time with it as I should. I think a comparison like that could be great! Thank you for watching!

Got a little Origin 5 combo and I really like it for home use. Also got a DSL-1 also a fun little amp (both same speaker 100% identical) and does sound different. Don't let anybody tell you what does sound right or wrong. Would not mind owning a Plexi or 800 😉

Nice video and playing!!! Questions: After seeing this video: 1. Does this amp have a direct line out? 2. If you had to pick one of your Marshalls, which would it be - the Vintage Modern? Studio Plexi? Studio JCM800? I'm trying to decide on one. I play some Jeff Beck songs so I will be rolling my volume to clean things up, but I also need notes to cut and sustain when I turn up the volume on my guitar. I will be using the amp at home, and possibly direct for recordings for videos. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.
@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. No direct out, just the effects loop and speaker out. If you're playing Jeff Beck, I'd choose the Vintage Modern, as Mr. Beck (RIP) did. He apparently loved it. For direct recordings I'd just get a load box. There are some great ones out there it is my opinion that most amps sound better when pushing 16 ohms, so look for a 16 ohms load box. Thank you for watching!

Did you have the master fully dimed for all tones? I use my 2466 with an Ox Box and noticed that it sounds a bit lackluster if the master isn‘t at least on 3-4 o‘ clock. Could maybe use a set of new tubes since it still has the factory ones from 2007. When Friedman came out with the 100w JEL-model in 2020 I remembered the VM since it does a similar thing uniting Plexi with hot rodded 80‘s tones.
@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
That master isn’t fined for all of it. It’s on 6 for most of the video, the only place I domed it is for those classic crunch sounds, starting around 6:15 (ZZ Top, Kiss, Stones and the little dynamic thing starting with the thumb plunking.) Thank you for watching!

@ yeah, I remember it well. It was stacked in a tower with a bunch of DSL100’s and a JSX, over a decade ago. Nobody was buying those amps.

I'd like a reissue of the heads & cabinets with the exclusive speakers. Instead of the digital reverb a power scaling that does not affect tone (like in the Suhr Badger) that lets you play in lower volume. In the original color of course, we don't need more black amps.
@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
That sounds like something I'd definitely be interested in. Do you recall which speakers the cabs used? I've never used one. Thank you for watching!!!!
@nowaylabsАй бұрын
@@TheGuitarNerdShow The speakers are named G12C, found this info online: “SPKR-00095 = G12C with spade terminals and manufactured in China by Celestion’s OEM partner ‘GPE’ as used in the Vintage Modern series. SPKR-00092 = G12C with solder terminals and manufactured in Celestions UK factory in Ipswich, as used in the Hendrix SUPER100JH 1982A and B cabs.”

I'm still trying to find my way out if the labyrinth of available tones with this amp. Even the slightest movement on any knob can make a big difference. And that's before you start touching your guitar's tone and volume. Ive never played a more touch responsive amp. I think people give up on them because the tone permutations far exceed anything they've encountered before. This is an "ears only" dial in amp, because you"ll find a good tone, then step back, and realize the knob positions don't make any sense. A lot of traditional dial in procedure has to get thrown out the window when tou plug into these. But the rewards are there. You just have to write settings down, because it's, in some ways, too much amp.
@TheGuitarNerdShowАй бұрын
That’s a great way to put it - labrynth of tones. There’s just so much in this amp! Thank you for watching!!!!

@TheGuitarNerdShow Yeah, it's wild how much of a difference symmetrical vs. asymmetrical clipping makes, as well as adding a Baxandall tone stack to the TS circuit! You've earned another sub!

I love my VM 2466. The Vintage Modern has a lot of gain on tap. But it is a bit more polite, even with more gain, than my 1985 2204 and my old mid 70's 50w JMP's. It's not a bad thing, just different in feel. The 2204's are my all time favourite Marshall's but the Vintage Modern has a place in my amp rig. It sits nicely somewhere in between the 2204 and the JMP's. It just has a thing of it's own. I guess it has more of a Van Halen vibe than a NWOBH vibe. Great amps, sounds just as good as any Silver Jubilee and that without any diode clipping. Just a pure tube cirquit path. And heavy transformers too, a very well built amp. Marshall did not save money on the design.
