What a wonderful vlog! I can just imagine the view at night. All I have to do is bring my stationary bike on the plane and place it by the windows to get either the Intramuros or Manila view while exercising. I must agree that this is my first time ever to see both rooms from a KZbinr.......you just made history Marshall 🤟🏽👍........9:48 And yes, I will start saving for your presidential suite stay next time. Instead of one night stay, how about a half day stay, lol. Good job!

Thank you for sharing. I have been to the Manila Hotel and stayed there as well for a few nights and was shown General MacArthur's suite. The Manila Hotel was actually built by the Americans early in 1900. President Eisenhower ( then a Major ) was once an aide of General MacArthur and was also in the Philippines. General MacArthur is beloved by Filipinos and he even named his aircraft - BATAAN! His rallying cry during WW2 was: "I Shall Return!" and he did fulfilled his promised on October 20, 1945 on Palo, Leyte Island. On the ground floor of the hotel, there are many photos of dignitaries and historical people who has been to the hotel as well like Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong, also a US Navy (Korean War ) Veteran.

Thanks for the great tour. I absolutely love the Manila Hotel and it's fascinating history. I had the privilege of visiting the MacArthur suite once in the mid 1990's. I do wish they would have some fun with the décor though, maybe put in some 1930s-40's era furnishings, or a vintage radio cabinet, something that harkens back to the old days. It just looks so modern today. *sigh*

It’s just laudable that you’re able to bring people to these places, albeit virtually, most of whom may not have had any idea about these elegant and opulent suites. I, for one, am guilty of such “uneducation”. My vague memory about General McArthur’s connection to Manila Hotel was only refreshed, and then, augmented with better knowledge of it by your management sponsored tour. I shan’t be able to afford myself a stay in any of these two immense suites but this video has allowed me a smidgen feel of accommodation. Thank you, Marshall. Here’s looking forward to more entertaining and informative vlogs of yours. Keep safe!

I am glad there is still alive at least one person with good taste and discernment to make videos and remind us that there was a period in earth history when things meant something and you couldn't buy your way into certain places without certain norms and attire Probably the manila hotel embodies the best of traditions and civilizations past. As an aside Marshall, maybe the hotel staff could gift you a copy of their fab vintage hardcover register from 1987--their special Diamond Jubilee Issue. So much history about General MacArthur and the Manila Hotel in general. Photos of dignitaries and famous stars that have stayed there, including Sean Connery himself! When I read "American Caesar" by William Manchester about Douglas MacArthur, it described him living in the penthouse that housed his great library that he inherited from his father. It was described as being surrounded 360 degrees by a rooftop walkway and that his favorite thing to do was to read at night while pacing the perimeter of the roof. He had to abandon the library when he evacuated and one of his first destinations when he came back was to check on his beloved library that, unfortunately, the Japanese had set ablaze just prior to making their own evacuation.

I have been there as a child but only in the lobby. I was getting ready to leave the Philippines in 1961 at the time. It was so nice, I remember as I walked up the entrance, there was a hair salon, american ladies were under the dryers with their hairs in rollers.

Marshall, I figured it out, thanks to this video. The "Million Dollar Pier" is basically the pier you see when you look out from the Manila hotel. General MacArthur picked the Manila Hotel to stay at because it was the tallest building in Manila at the time he moved in, as well the his military office was across the road at Intramuros.
@marshallbuttersvlogs68803 жыл бұрын
That would be the pier to the right as you stand looking out at the bay. The one the Coast Guard is using?

I thought, for sure, Marshall was going to sit down by MacArthur's desk and say something like... Bond...James Bond. I guess you had to show a modicum of respect for the man and the hotel he managed. I didn't know he even was the GM of Manila Hotel back then. The Presidential Suite was truly impressive, but the price tag is enough to deflate any interest in it and drops you back down to Earth. The only Presidential Suite I've seen personally was Cebu Plaza Hotel back when I worked for the hotel. It was furnished like that of Manila Hotel's. Imelda Marcos used to stop by and use the suite for a few hours when she visited Cebu. What else can I say...great job, Marshall!
