Year before they laid us all off dec 23 because the weather was causing issues with the mill freezing up. brought back dec 27, 28, 29 & 30 as temp part time. Rehired on Jan 3. the day after a holiday the company I was working for sent me to the hospital for some blood tests. there was a gas leak..some sort of ammonia...in the supply room for the lab. they looked at the MSDS and it said that a blood test was warranted just in case. ok, I'm cool with that. then they said "can you maybe...drive yourself? and punch out before you go?" wait...this stuff MIGHT be deadly...and you want me to drive? NOPE! and you're paying because you're sending me for something YOU exposed me to! "so, you're refusing medical attention then?" nope, but I'll happily open that supply closet door and then the whole damned building will need to get tested..how about them apples? you like that? they paid me for the time and the blood tests. then I had to go to the labor board when they tried to not pay me for the holiday because I wasn't "at work" for 8 hours on the day after the holiday....

The place I work at is opposite of this thankfully. The business adjacent to us actually had a small fire a few weeks ago and we were sent home the rest of the day with pay. If there is inclement weather such as snow, we'll get paid for those days also if work is closed. We also don't have the stupid rule about holiday pay dependent on working the day before and after. We get paid for the holiday even if you want to chain your time off to it.

am a trucker. every place i have gone to that had a union did their best to make my life miserable. very often union warehouses would demand the driver either unload and re-palletize the cargo and expect the driver to sort out the busted pallets provided OR expect the driver to pay a $300+ lumper of non union guys, all of this would take 3+ hours doing something any non union warehouse could do in half an hour. the lumper fee does get reimbursed sure but that's not important. it's almost like the union places hate anyone not in the union while the union guys are slow, overpayed thieves.

I worked for a call center who tried stuff like that. The trick is to know the Supervisor´s Car. Just sprinkle in "Hey... you still have that red ford, yes? The one with the number plate XYZ?" Usually a few silent comrades settle the score pretty easily and the supervisor will learn to grow a backbone before fucking with employees.

My time warner job tried to pull this crap on me back in 2006. The holiday was in the middle of the week and I had scheduled time off for mon-tuesday. I came back on thursday. Two weeks later when I got paid, I was missing holiday pay and was given two occurrences. Someone in workforce used sick time instead of my vacation pay so it showed that I had called in. It was a nightmare to get it fixed and they tried to bully me to allowing it to go their way. I'm not dumb or do I roll over and take it. And at that time they used to punish us for scheduling sick time. That was eventually changed because of backlash. They wanted you to call in for sick time so they could give you occurrences.
