@13:58 you say the reason you don't boil bluecrabs! The meat gets mushy and loses flavor. Try steaming them in a double cooker, use 1/3 beer, 1/3 vinegar, 1/3 water. Layer plenty of Old-Bay as you put them in pot- you wont need all that onion/lemon/garlic. Steam them until they get just beyond orange, starting to get glowing red. Much better!

You got it going on Marsh Man/Joel! Many years ago, I used to sometimes help a co-worker of mine run his 120 crab traps in SW Lake Ponchartrain. Always enjoyed running the traps, being on the water in the morning. Females are my fav too, especially the hard bright orange roe. And fried soft shells too. D had molting tanks at his house.

Loved your video!! I’m from Maryland grew up on Blue Crabs!! Also I’ve been crabbing bunch of the time same way you’re doing it I really like the GoPro footage that was awesome! Now I’m hungry for some crabs🤗The prices to buy them are astronomical I just saw a dozen for 100 bucks the other day and they were large but they appeared closer to medium. Catching your own is the Way to go!

That dam on the west side of Wonder lake (PAC WMA) used to be AWESOME before it was destroyed and rebuilt several years ago. You would always have several boatloads of people there ahead of you, but they always caught their limit so fast that you never had to wait long for a spot to open up. One time, I caught the limit of 12 dozen in a little less than 30 minutes ! Before I put the 4th line in (which I never got to) the 1st and 2nd were pulling HARD ! The second I threw the lines in, they were pulling. 4-5 at a time was the rule that day, and not the exception. The exception was about 7-8 at a time which happened at least twice that day. It looked like a basket ball size clump of crabs. I actually thought my line got snagged on something due to the weight. That only happened to me on that dam one time, but MANY times I caught my limit in just an hour or so. Rarely did I not catch my limit. Never went back since they rebuilt the dam because I heard several times that it's very high now, and you can't walk on it anymore.

A few other stupid questions, but I’m curious what you do. Do you put a weight a few feet below the buoy to keep the line from getting tangled in boat props? I know they sell a special weighted rope (lead strands?), but not sure. Next, what do you use to attach bait to net? Zip ties? And do you ever use a weight/sinker on the bottom of the net to hold it?

No weight on line or net. The bait is attached to the net with a shower-curtain clip.

I learned so much from this video! I watch most of your videos for your fishing, but this was a real treat! I often bring a couple of traps out when I go kayak fishing as a backup plan or complement on the plate for the day's catch. The crab activity underwater was FASCINATING! That was so interesting to watch their behavior. The whole "eating with his face" as opposed to grabbing meat with the claws and bringing food to his mouth surprised me. I think you are right in saying that it maybe some of the best underwater footage you've gotten. It was action packed! 🦀 🦀 🦀

I have some 20” round deep water crawfish nets, which have much smaller stitching/opening than the crab nets do. Would the crawfish nets work or do you think the crabs would be able to get out easier? I’d just rather not buy new nets if i can duel purpose the ones i have. The nets are made by Gus’s here in Slidell.

Floats. They're designed to keep the bridle strings above the net when it's sitting on the bottom.

Important question for you: I’m in South Florida, and buying a boat specifically for blue crabbing. Our regulations require a maximum of 5 POTS for recreational crabbing, plus all kinds of regs on the specs of the pots. Using nets like yours, the regs might allow me to drop TEN of the things, but how long do you normally let them sit before pulling? I assume that if they’re hitting your bait like gangbusters, you can do quick soaks, but I’m curious what you’re starting point is. Half hour? Hour? More? Less? Thanks!!!

You can ignore this. I see what you wrote elsewhere. Maybe 15 minutes, and just keep running net to net. Makes total sense for many reasons, not the LEAST of which is trying to fit 2 dozen pots on your boat! Which wouldn’t be allowed anyway.

They're actually bigger than they look in the video, due to the width of the camera lens and the distance the crabs are from it. But to answer your question, no, there are no size restrictions in Louisiana for recreational crabbers.

Hello Marsh man! I was wondering on if u’d know and could advise me, I’ll be 61 n May, truck is not trustworthy, I live n Oklahoma, and I love crab meat, anyway, I was wondering if u had any idea on how far North n Louisiana and what river that people r still able to catch crabs, closer yet would be Texas, would u know area’s and rivers. I have a serious craving to go have fun catching and eating crabs, and camping to top it off! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, yep, I’m begging for knowledge. The 1st and last time I’ve ever went crabbing was with my aunt and uncle who then lived n New Orleans, and yes, that was the 1st time I’ve ever eaten crab legs, (that’s the only part they gave me, and yep, then it was yuk to me, but I remember what a blast it was catching them off the bridge as though it was yesterday. Around age 25, I gave crab meat another try, and since then, I can’t get enough. So please, if u could help me, like I said, I’ll be 61 n May, and would love to do a crab and cook before time runs out. Thank u

One of the best places to crab from the shore is Bayou Lacombe down by the lake. We go out in the boat and just use string and turkey necks off the side of the boat and use a scoop net to grab 'em.

Recreational crabbing has statistically zero impact on the fishery, and isn't even a drop in the bucket when compared to commercial crabbing. The state's biologists study the crab fishery intensely, and ask the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission to institute tighter regulations when they are needed.

That's actually inaccurate. Have you studied the fecundity of Louisiana crabs and compared it with the state's carrying capacity? If so, and you've found cause for concern, please reveal your findings, so I may look closely at them. The creatures can't be stockpiled. The state's estuaries will never host more than they're capable of supporting. That means in a healthy population, if you remove one female crab, another will take her place.

I agree. I never keep the female. I have seen statistics showing the decline in New Jersey blue claw populations in the past decades and can’t eat the females in good faith for future generations that want to bring home a bushel a day. (No scientific research just good karma)

As I mention in the video, I like 8 to 12 feet that's adjacent to deep water. Seabrook still has good crabbing, but it can definitely be hit or miss.

Minimum crab size in nj is 4 1/2". But honestly nothing under 5 1/2 is worth keeping IMO. Too much work for too little meat. Always throw those smaller ones back

Me and a friend had 140 crab pots. Threw the females and small Jimmies back. If you want an easy way to keep your crabs fresh for up to a week, put them in a brown paper grocery bag, roll the top over and put them in the crisper drawer in the refrigerator.

I run two dozen nets. As soon as I pick up the last one, I motor around to the beginning of the string, and do the run all over again. If you let them sit, you'll lose your bait in no time.

I freeze 2 liter coke bottles or milk jugs and put them in my cooler to keep the crabs cool. That way you don’t have to worry about the melt water at all.
