I was a USMC recruiter from 2003 thru 2007 and when a kid showed me dedication and the want I would go to all ends of the Earth for that kid. Regardless of their background I pulled out all the stops to make it happen. Guys like this make recruiting all worth it. Horrible long days but 1 guy like this made it worth it to me. Just finished watching this and his final words of wisdom really struck a chord with me. I’ve been in comparison trap ever since I got out six years ago. I was in the Guard for six years. Did a peacekeeping deployment and two NATO exercises. But I got out the day my unit got the WARNO for a combat deployment and six months prior to that I lost my stripes. Ever since then (especially on days like today) I always think that my service was useless/uneventful compared to other people I know and that I failed myself in some way. Hearing his story helps me realize that even these badass SOF guys aren’t perfect. So I just want to say thank you. I really needed that today and I’m glad that you’re life has headed into an awesome post-service direction.

I can really relate to the mentality of "you're not a real Marine until you been to combat". My first deployment was with 2/7 F to nowzad Afghanistan in 2008. I wanted so badly to be a combat tested Marine right up until I got to that hell hole. That place was an IED infested mine field with daily fierce fighting. I can honestly say that after the first week I was there, I wanted nothing more than to leave! It was the most terrified I've ever been. It was 9 months of almost uncontrollable fear. My brother in law (who was also a grunt) never had the opportunity to do a combat deployment and that really bothers him. I tell him "you didn't miss anything and just joining the marine corps infantry during time of war is something to be very proud of". S/F warrior!!

I was a Advisor in Afghanistan in 12 in RC north and we had a team get hit by a motorcycle IED and lost 4 and then my buddies team got hit with 5 wounded 12 was a bad year for my Advisor teams. And then my friend who was a officer went back to Afghanistan and was assassinated by a insider. RIP Brent Taylor. These people supporting these wars today without ever being in war kill me. Now as for myself I'm 100% disabled living in the mtns with just me and my dog and enjoy being left alone. I was fighting my medical retirement also and had orders to go advise in Egypt until my SgtMaj. Told me to stop and get out because my luck was going to run out since all my friends luck ran out. Getting out for me was the hardest thing to do but I'm glad I did get out. Once I got off all the meds they put me on also was the greatest thing I did.

I served with the same Unit, 2/1 from 05-09. I was in Fox and Weapons Co. Some of what he said was true with our seniors holding it over us boots that we needed to prove ourselves. Well of course, they just finished getting shot up in Iraq for 2 tours! The mind games were real but as for the leadership being bad, NO. Echo, his company, always had discipline issues. Was I there in Echo, no, I was in Fox but we always paid for something that happened with them or were told don't be like Echo. Maybe his NCO's weren't the greatest but I can tell you that in both Fox and Weapons Co, our leaders were awesome and while hard asses, they looked after us. This is not a 2/1 thing as a whole. This is one defiant Marine's view out from a hole in the ground, it's a VERY limited picture of what was going on around him. I got to the fleet same time Prime Hall did, I actually did the same exact sniper indoc as him, did that year long 31st MEU pump, and went to Iraq in 2009. All the same. If you are a problem Marine, you manifest more problems on top of you. My experience wasn't unicorns and glitter but it was never supposed to be. If you're getting busted down and on restriction, that's a personal issue, not commands. Once you're in that hole, you lose respect and may never get out. I made it to Corporal from Pvt in 3 years because I followed the rules and thrived in 2/1. I respect Hall for his later accomplishments I really do, but don't give me that 2/1 this, 2/1 that boo hoo me bullshit. "If I just stay out of trouble" Dude was fighting himself to not screw up! It's not hard to do well in the Corps, unless you make it hard for yourself. I'm not against Hall but the record needs to be set straight on 2/1, which is not affiliated with his Snipers command by the way.
@michaelsinclair7253

I’m sure that he now realizes that it was his personal issues at the time, and not the unit itself. He makes a valid point about the typical single idiot of a leader who takes joy in crushing people. They exist in every Command.

That is actually a huge skill, people don’t understand how important it is and how much it says about you when it comes to not just how you speak and the words you use, it’s maintaining the same exact tone throughout a story that has the highest highs and the lowest lows, all of these men have dealt with death and lived through times where they could have died they all have this same quality.
