I think a lot of it has to do with the fact they get paid while playing Smash anyways. Most people cannot play Smash competitively as a life style, unless they win all the time. I think it is best to just play it with just friendlies and if you go to tournaments just do cause you want to see the limits of the players and the game rather than being number 1. That is just my take.
