An American marten defends a piece of bait from a Northern goshawk. The bait is set up to attract marten to a remote camera station that allows researchers to identify individual animals using their unique chest and throat markings. This footage was captured in the John Prince Research Forest (JPRF) in north central British Columbia. The forest is co-managed by the University of Northern British Columbia and the Tl'azt'en First Nation. Thanks to JPRF researchers and HCTF grant recipients Shannon Crowley and Dexter Hodder for sharing this amazing footage with us! To find out more about this conservation project, visit hctf.ca/marten-vs-goshawk/

Hardly; the hawk more likely the lucky one. Martens are fierce predators on the same side of the food chain; they eat similar things. It's like watching a tiger and a lion fight over food. Martens can fatally wound bobcats and kill deer, things that hawk would consider impossible. Martens are mustelids, related to weasels and the famous wolverine and honey badger.

@HCTFBC
@HCTFBC 6 жыл бұрын
Great question! We talked to one of our marten experts, and they were unable to determine whether this animal was male or female. American (aka Pine) marten are sexually dimorphic, meaning that males and females differ in appearance, but it is their size rather than the appearance of their underbelly that allows observers to differentiate between male and female marten. Male marten, on average, are 15% longer and as much as 65% heavier than females, but it is difficult to be certain whether an animal is male or female using video alone. Some conservation projects using video analysis add a hair snagging device at the camera station so that researchers can find out additional information about individual animals captured on camera: see kzbin.info/www/bejne/mGannauklNmFr68 for an example of a project using this technique on wolverines.
