I grew up with the Rubinstein, Heifetz, Piatigorsky recording (wit hthe Ravel on the flip side) and have played the piece many times (I am an amateur pianist). Argerich's pianism is simply astonishing, which is not news to those of us who have loved her playing for decades. The Scherzo is simply miraculous, the perfect tempo and sound for this music. If you play the piano, try it for yourself and you will understand what this genius did here.

Dan Sloutskovski is a marvelous cellist and artist. What a beautiful moment it must have been also to play Mendelssohn with genius Martha. Ivry Gitlis said "she is an "event" , not a pianist". Yes. This is the quality of music we want and need. Thank you for posting this recording.

After Rubinstein, Heifetz and Piatigorsky, it seems rather lacking pace and vitality. I feel that the cellist drags at the others, especially with his openings, whereas the pianist seems to want to inject more pace, and does a great job. The violinist needs more variation with his voicing.

This piece perfectly demonstrates how disproportionately difficult piano parts are in chamber music. The same is true with the second trio, the Rachmaninov cello sonata, the Beethoven violin sonatas, etc.
@thomasaldenhoven95133 жыл бұрын
"Mendesohn" zieht immer :-)
Yeah, I don’t know what’s worse - the really great phrasing, or the lack of blandness!
