Fun fact: In Greece we bake Tsoureki on the Thursday before Easter, however we eat it on Saturday night after church or on Easter Sunday, only after the fast has ended. Because everyone loves it here, we end up making it all year long. There're many ways you can make one, actually! Also, try it with nutella on top. Happy Holidays 🎄🎀❤️

Thank you Martha for your delicious recipes, I’m Italian, I’m happy to hear that you love panettone, but I have to tell you that the original panettone has neither sugar nor almonds on top. We don’t put beaten egg, we make a cross cut on top, we just put a little piece of butter in the center of the cross, and bake.

Not my mother or grandmothers, they only bought bread. I married a man raised in the country, his mother was 100% French and she could bake and cook everything way better than my mother. One Thanksgiving my mom thought she was buying a completely cooked dinner and my dad went to pick it up at an exact time while mom was mashing potatoes. My daughter opened the box and said grandma it’s still frozen, we died laughing and my mom cried. Another time at Christmas she was scooping up food from containers and she was just a nervous wreck and said next year she would have to take more shortcuts. Again my daughter looked at me and smiled. Of course my daughter has never cooked a meal and served a dinner party and she is over 50. I’ve cooked many dinners. But now I’m 75 and very handicapped so I don’t have dinner parties now besides most of our family has passed away. Maybe Martha would adopt us.

Merry Christmas! You actually pronounce it "Shtollen" with a short "o". :) Yours looks so good! ♥️♥️♥️ Poppy seed Stollen is also great, or adding Grand Marnier into the marzipan core. In Germany we also love Stollen bites, i.e. tiny Stollen in the size of small rolls or scones. Also great as a gift.

Thank you! I was wondering about the pronunciation. Perhaps in the US they say "stolen" because "Stalin" is a name that brings up such negative connotations here? I'd love to try it one day.

This is a great recipe...we have our own family recipe but I did try this one. I couldn’t use 4 stollen. ... so I’ve needed to cut it down to only make two. Turned out fine. I, however, used rum instead of cognac to soak the currents/raisins as we do in our nw recipe. Usually it is made some time in November so that it can cure and flavors meld over time to enjoy over the holidays. Beware even if you wanted to do this recipe and use a stand mixer you’d never a fairly powerful one as it is a very bulky and heavy dough especially after you add the fruit and nuts. Thanks for sharing this Martha!

Stollen is pronounced like Pollen . Rum soaked raisins are used in this bread, makes a huge difference, The alcohol evaporates while the bread is baking. Martha also baked it too long or the heat was too high, because her Stollen is too dark . When done , the finished product may be wrapped in a rum soaked cloth and thus may be kept for a very long time on one's kitchen counter !. I have baked Stollen for 60 years , to me it is an irresistible bread and I can not just eat it once a day . I gain a few pounds during the holy days. You will not regret my suggestions !
