Marti Pellow - Dante's Prayer (Official Video)

I've got something I want to share with you. When we decided to do Pellow Talk, I didn't just want to do a book. I wanted to give you a new record, new videos, and new photography so that everything came together. Dante's Prayer was very much inspired by my love for Scotland. That's resonated even more deeply these past few weeks, following the death of the Queen at Balmoral. I was in Scotland when that happened but didn't want to say anything for a little while, so as to be respectful of what had happened. I hope you all understand.
The Dante's Prayer video was sent to people who'd bought the tartan edition of Pellow Talk - and the feedback was incredible. People from the UK, North America and around the world were deeply moved by the music and the strong Scottish theme. The truth is, people were so connected with what we'd done that I wanted to share it with everyone, so that you can all enjoy it. I thought I should also share the comments from some of the people who received Dante's Prayer and I've listed them below. I'm really thrilled that people have got so much from it and that it moved them, the way it moved me. It's incredible to hear and I'm grateful to everyone who's been in touch.

Used to walk to this lighthouse and my husband then wanted to buy it . A lovely lady has since and restored it.He was a brilliant music teacher at Tobermory . I was a Ta there too. He would meditate there and I would gaze towards the Cullins too . I missed my Family in England and my daughter struggled as she was only 17 when we left her in Leicestershire. I went back to support her for a while and she and her then boyfriend lived with me while Pete my hubby taught music and built our home in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull. It was not easy for me . I had to work 3 jobs to make ends meet. However Our daughter never gave up her musical dream and now thanks to support from her sister and brother and a great team (INVADA) She has truly found her voice as billynomates. Sadly Pete ,my husband now has late stage Parkinsons and struggles to talk and walk sometimes. However our love of music carries us through. Thank you ,you got me through Lockdown .Tor (billynomates) wrote her album here during it too.with dad on the Isle of Wight and has never looked back, My dad passed away suddenly just before HM Queen Elizabeth 11 . So this beautiful song resonates even more than it did when Loreena sang it so many years ago, Again Thank you x Hazel

Such things are (to a degree) subjective, no ”rights” or “wrongs.” I like both equally, perhaps for different reasons. I was a professional soloist, choral director and voice coach for many years. I was only familiar with McKinnett’s original, having just now discovered this adaptation. Her voice is rather thin and delicate, his somewhat as well, neither singing out fully at any point. That approach (technique) lends an air of wistful melancholy, mystery and introspective “contemplation.” The video here (the lighting, spectacular scenery and views, and careful editing) enhance the song. Of course McKinnett’s can’t fairly compete with that. I find the musical introduction here to be less odd, a bit less lengthy and perhaps more mood setting. (Again though, subjective.) The visual effect of a warrior contemplating his own mortality, knowing he might well die in the next battle provides a nice context that McKinnett’s cannot hope to compete with. Male/female, yin/yang All one can do is critique the voices and style of presentation. Both voices work in that respect. Interesting to “note” the arranger’s choice to change a pitch used for each iteration of “please remember me,” resulting in a minor chord, the affect of which leaves the listener longing for musical “closure,” which adds to the song’s sadness. The one “bone I would pick” with this version is the balance between the voice and instrumentation is a wee bit off, as at times the instruments compete with the voice rather than supporting it. The cello and musical arrangement of the intro (in this McK version) is splendid and effective in setting the mood. Much nicer than another arrangement of her’s I heard on Spotify. Excellent choice. The intro to the male version works to set the context of the lyrics, as envisioned in the warriors video. Also a good choice, as the melodious cello introduction would have belied the warrior’s battle weary lament.
