I met Dan Inosanto at a tournament one time and asked for an autograph. He graciously agreed, but when I asked him to write "Take it easy on me next time", he just laughed and said "no way!". A cool dude, but that would have made a great keepsake. :)

I've had the opportunity to train with Sifu Dan a couple times. Hes a really nice guy, and incredibly knowledgeable. He taught my master who's a full instructor under him. They are times I look back on and remember quite fondly.

Robert Clouse butchered the left over footage,to make that monstrosity in 1978 with stand in actor's,and specifically,a cardboard cutout. In my own humble opinion,it was terrible,until Bruce himself came into it. As more of Bruce's writings were found, they should remake it with today's technology. It would be a fantastic final tribute to the legend that is, Bruce Lee. Again,this is only my humble opinion.

In '74, I was stationed at Camp Pendleton....when I saw 'Fists of Fury' for the first time. There was a little theater in the neighboring town of Oceanside, that used to run double-features all the time....of kung-fu movies. There was always at least one Bruce Lee film. The place was often packed with rowdy Marines. I had a couple of roommates at the time & one of them had a pair of nunchucks. Of course we were usually just cracking ourselves in the head with them.

When learning nunchucks a beginner should hold their weapon close to the chain until they become VERY comfortable with the motion and the various striking techniques. They're much easier to control that way, and the inevitable training accidents are somewhat less painful.

If you hold the nunchaku close to the end it has more power and range. There are nunchaks with shorter chain or rope in between the two nunchakus sticks which enables you to make more tricks with the rope. With them there is a reason the hold it more near to the rope or chain, because it will make this fancy tricks possible: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mou6kJ5_qKqNpZI If you don't perform this tricks and your nunchaku rope is long, you don't need to hold it too close.

You should buy the Criterion Collection of the Bruce Lee Boxset. Fun fact : they remastered this version so now during the "missing dialogue" scene, he says "Do you understand, this bamboo becomes a sword." There are also other videos were there is additional scenes here on youtube before the remaster 👍

Maximum range, maximum power and speed is what you get while holding it away from the chain end...but a the cost of more difficult handling and control. For using Nanchucks as a weapon during a fight, how will you like to use it? If just for show/ kata/ Taolu/ shadow boxing, holding near the chain end will have better control, less strain to the wrist. For a fight, what Bruce Lee is showing is what it should be.

you are correct, they shot movies in Hong Kong at that time without sound. The dialog you hear is not by Bruce, as it was added much later and they did not have Bruce's recordings, mind you that he did not finish "Game of Death", except he did release a teaser trailer back when "The Way of the Dragon" was out in cinemas in Hong Kong... By the way, many thought it was Dan Inosanto who taught Bruce the nunchakus, but it was actually another Los Angeles students, Steve Golden (who is still alive by the way).

small note: the guy in the light blue shirt is not bruce's student in the real version of the movie. he and the other guy are both members of a gang that force bruce's character to climb this pagoda. bruce had written this character to be more antagonistic towards to him to make for a more interesting dynamic in the group. you can tell by his body language that the guy can't stand bruce but has to put up with him to get to the top. you can see more of this relationship in the fight after this one. no words are exchanged but you can see that they aren't friends. very good visual story telling from bruce.

When I learned a little nunchucks all those years ago, I held them close to the chain too. Everything I can find suggests that a grip closer to the chain makes it a little easier to control and less likely to hit yourself, as often as I still did XD I guess holding them further down means you get more reach and power and stuff but hitting yourself hurts WAY more as a result XD

The storyline of The Game of Death had to do with Bruce Lee being in undefeated martial Arts champion, whose sister was kidnapped so that he would help gangsters get what was on top of the Pagoda. The two guys were sent along to help Bruce Lee as well as keep an eye on him, but Bruce Lee ended up using them as Crash Test Dummies.

Honestly the climax of this fight scene is almost like watching a boxer similar to Muhammad Ali just dance around his flat footed opponent while he just works the jab waiting for that big punch.

That's because Bruce got it from him and pointed out how impressive and elusive Ali was at his height and weight. He would watch footage of Ali and mirror his footwork and he's the reason why he'd implemented boxing into his martial arts. But it was Sugar Ray Robinson who invented that style. Ali talked about how took it from him.

Grandmaster William Cheung, my teacher's teacher, told us once that Bruce Lee called him in Australia to ask him to appear in Game of Death as the last opponent on the top floor. But William couldn't make it back to Hong Kong to help Bruce because William couldn't leave his job at that time. So Bruce had to choose someone else. Bruce really respected Wong Shong Leung and William Cheung, and considered William Cheung to be the best street fighter he had ever met. Bruce mentioned this to his students in California; including Dan Inosanto. Dan Inosanto mentions this on the first few pages of William Cheungs book "Wing Chun Bil Jee: The Art of Thrusting Fingers". I was taught a long time ago holding near it end you have more whipping power and u keep some distance away from your opponent. Things may have changed over the past 35 years when i started. FYI BL was trained in fencing too therefore the quick in and out movements

love your observations! to answer your excellent nunchucku-question, when you "choke-up" on them is a recommended way to hold them for beginners. their easier to control i.e. less of a chance of bopping the rear of your head and/or elbows, lol!

i have been training in the art's for 52yrs. while this means by no means, that i am a master. i started training in ki-kaju-kenpo and from the beggining we were taught to hold them about an inch from the bottom. holding them near the rope or chain is for fancy tricks. most people i see now do really cool tricks with them and the nunchucku are very thin and light. not for combat but for entertainment...

If you’re looking for some good fights to react to, here are a few I enjoyed: Popular choice, but still a good fight, but the hallway fight in the first season of Daredevil was excellent! Obscure choice, but there was an episode of a show called The Closer in season six titled Old Money that had a surprisingly good fight at the beginning of it. Surprising because the show didn’t normally do fights.

how uncut version came about I have several HK BL magazines in English by HK & US journalist's 1 says his ex wife sold off box of BL's what she thought was junk notes & useless sketching's etc were original drafts of Game of Deaths movie script dialog notes & Fight choreography stick figures drawn by Bruce & I think guy who brought it had some film footage that matched those notes that was not used originally as sound & script for those scenes were thought lost 4-evea but luckily got Remastered into what we see just saw along with other footage studio did have but too incomplete to use. about 15 yrs ago while on holiday I meet up & briefly trained with an old friend of Brandon Lee & he had trained Shaolin (in China) & was one of toughest Martial artist I ever trained with = to most of my past Instructors (& few were actual-Champions) & said Brandon was cool fun guy to hang around town with & of course a great Martial-artist & spared hard-out but with good control & fluid but powerful kicks I think he was truthful as always brightened up talking about Brandon.

Agreed. The final 3 levels of the Pagoda were the only parts of the true film actually shot before Bruce passed away, but the half hour that we got is absolutely incredible all the way through. I can only imagine how amazing the full film would have been.

I saw a master once use nunchuku against three opponents coming at him katanas. The 80 year old never swung them but deflected and hit pressure point which dropped them immediately. This was an auditorium in North Dakota and it was Master Oyata...my Master's Master. He came to do a demonstration but half the people walked out when they saw how he turned studs half purple because of loss of blood flow. He knew how to kill with a flick of his will. He also knew how to heal them with strikes to pressure points that let the blood flow again. He was 10th degree from Okinawa in Gojo Ryu. He wore a denim GI and was old. Seriously, people were about to throw up because they didn't understand what they were seeing. He was the kindest and most humble man ever. If you like Bruce's fight scenes, I recommend reacting to HBO's "Warriors" with Ah Sahm's (Andrew Koji) fight scenes. He's not full Bruce in the show, but you can tell he drew a lot of inspiration from it.

This was the recovered footage of what Bruce had filmed before he passed. Before this version of Bruce's work (as he intended it) was released, you only had the edited version tacked on to the rest of the movie. The movie that was released was heavily edited and left the guys that came in with Bruce out. Then they filmed another guy in Bruce's role for like 3/4ths of the movie. You could call that the first Brucesploitation movie. It was a decent movie otherwise, but disappointing if you were expecting Bruce. The first time I saw it though, I got goosebumps when the real Bruce finally made it on screen.

Not sure if this comment is too late, but holding near the top is faster and you have more control. Holding near the bottom provides more force if you have the ability to stabilize them. Longer distance to the end provides a greater moment and more force.

I’m not professionally trained with the nunchaku, but my neighbor that got me into Taekwondo as a kid, he gave me a pair when I was 12-13 years old. He taught me the basics and the rest I just learned from mimicking Bruce Lee. For showing off, I choked up on them nearer to the chain. However, if I were to use them in a fight, I’d probably switch between the 2. Holding it near the bottom gives it more length & power. You also have to consider that Lee and Inosanto are using the Filipino version of a nunchaku (Tabak Toyok). The chain’s longer and the handles are typically shorter, so it feels different than the Okinawan type.

I've spent some time training full contact with weapons. Sticks, knives mainly altho we also had poles, ropes and nunchucks, anything goes pretty much. Honestly nunchucks would be the last weapon I would choose. It looks great. All flashy but the problem arises that the return on a strike is uncontrolled on the loose end which makes a follow up strike or recovery for defense difficult. I am not saying it's not possible I just think that its much easier to become proficient with a stick or knife much faster than nunchakus. If you want to see what full contact fighting with weapons actually looks like check out some Dog Brothers videos. You won't see too many nunchucks. Still a fun thing to play with tho.

You still didn't play that scene in it's entirety. It starts off with the other two fighting Dan and getting beat. Playing it, is also part and point of his philosophy, because the other two, like Dan, came in with a style that limited them. The only person who didn't come in with a style was Kareem Abdul Jabar
