It's a common misconception that wing chun requires space to execute, when actually the whole objective is to close the gap and attack in close quarters, that was the concept the elevator scene was trying to achieve. The stairwell scene was very well done, with the intention to show the geometry and structure to the system, displaying the triangle form of the stance and its effect, although they keep trying to depict the yee jee kim yeung ma as an immovable position which its not.

@SwordTune3 жыл бұрын
I think people are usually surprised with how versatile the kicks and elbows are in WC, most only think about the hands and oblique kick. However, you shouldn't be limited just by what some people did in the past. Ip Man's WC was just his tool for teaching martial arts to as many people as possible. One man's teaching philosophy can't be made into an entire system without become too rigid. Wing Chun is one of the traditional martial arts that has the best chance to modernize itself and be more practical.
@mountaintiger69453 жыл бұрын
@@SwordTune You're right about it's versatility, I learned that by watching Master Z teaming up with Master Ip in the movie. I've studied the various stories on WC origins and have come to the conclusion that they're not separate stories but continuations of the same story, I hit a wall though in the connection with the 5 masters who escaped the destruction of the temple and Wing Chuns teacher. The 5 were male her teacher was female, the temple wasn't co-ed, so it's still a mystery, except for that all the stories line up with each other from what I've been told of the reason WC was developed in the first place up to it coming to Hong Kong. BTW speaking of modernization, have you seen the new version being taught in Germany, it definitely has it's origins in WC from the demos I've seen posted on KZbin. My instructor is Jose Grados of NYC, you maybe never heard of him but that's ok, he's got some good vids here on KZbin if you're interested.

Mixture between muay thai & TKD? Nonsense! Muay boran has it's own unique forms & techniques. That are nothing like TKD. Man, I hate it when TKD guys try to promote their useless martial art by riding on the fame & reputation of other actual tried & tested combat systems. Like muay thai. Face it, pure TKD is a *joke* both in & out of the ring. Without combining TKD & basic kickboxing? These K-Pop fighters get floored 9/10 times because TKD, as a *combat system* is fantastical, impractical & flawed for real world application. Like, who even stands a chance in the Octagon or ring using pure TKD, tell me? Bouncing around like a Mexican jumping bean & spinning like a ballerina when cornered. With no basic boxing nor clinch-work. A waste of time is what TKD is.

Have you seen a Thai fighter tho… more so if they can headbut. People like to glorify king fu cus “they learn since childhood”. Well that’s what Muay Thai fighters do. They fight in arenas for money from age of 7. Their knees break ribs. You can’t sticky hands out of that. Can wing Chung counter a clinch… sure, but no one clinches out of nowhere. They set it up with punches kicks elbow and knees. Thai fighters fight weekly. They are fucking tanks.
@fionatsang9353 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely. Wing chun is designed for, and is most effective at, close range. There's a reason the one inch punch is part of the repertoire; the chain punches don't need a centrifugal wind up like a roundhouse, it's blunt force with the elbow directly behind the knuckles for added strength. If a roundhouse is like swinging a bat at someone's head, a wing chun punch is like ramming the end of the bat directly into someone's face. The blocks rely on being in close range too; it is actually a danger for martial artists whose ideal striking distance is longer range because it can get in under their guard. (I don't know enough about muay thai to compare the two; trying to stop knee and elbow strikes with standard wing chun blocks would be brutal, better to try to disrupt their balance by attacking when they take one foot off the ground or commit to a strike)

Obviously there are some liberties taken with that it is a movie (reduce injury) and that they are on stairs (reduce injury), but he makes some good points. Trained in both, and it is not about the differences in techniques. It is about how you train and different amounts of skill, strength, speed, etc., these determine who wins. Some Wing Chun when used against Muay Thai are just great. Most MT artists will not handle well the difference between a fellow MT practitioner parrying a teep, versus a WC practitioner doing gan-da, which is a shift of weight away from the teep or kick, parrying, and moving in close and getting under the leg that just tried to teep. But, if the MT artist starts using a low kick to the knee, the WC guy will be hard-pressed. WC's answer would be to get in before the kick lands, but unless you have seen the kick a thousand times, that timing is going to be hard to find. How you train makes all the difference.

the only problem with that is the the WC Practitioner has to be perfect in every way, whereas an adequate Muay Thai practitioner can do a ton of damage with knees and elbows in the clinch. If they were both masters it would be closer, sure (which in the movie yes). But the skill level required for that level of execution is incredibly high. For me, effectiveness comes from what skill level do I require for this to be effective. If the skill level is low for it to work (but can always be improved on to become more effective) then that is effective. If something requires years and years of mastery to become effective then it is less effective in my eyes. Mastery is always something to strive for but for me simple is always best

There is a lot not muay thai about that 'muay thai' fighter. His kicks are very tkd and his form is very karate. He manages to drop a golden Tony Jaa stance, but that's it.

Yeah it seems to be super stylized around the Muay Boran style and the Elephant Style that Tony Jaa developed for the Protector movie

As already said, it all depends on the practioner... but for a master like Ip Man, getting in close might be a huge mistake, as intermediate and advance levels in Wing Chun are all about contact, in-close fighting, precision and control.

I think id disagree wing chun is a layered fighting style. You fight at length first then close the distance. Its how you test your opponent. This fighter chose to get him in close proximity without testing. It was a wager in a way wreckless agressive and effective. He underestimated IP mans adaptability however and by the time they exited the elavator there was no reset to test each other only a desire to out this to an end quickly.

Yes, Wing Chun is a medium and close range style (with a heavy focus on that close range). My point is that to think if a Muy Thai guy can simply just clinch a Wing Chun practioner and automatically the fight is over is a underestimation of Wing Chun. The last thing you wanna do against a Wing Chun guy is get close and give him contact, as if he has no defense against this or would let it get to that point (depending on his skill). By the time you get to Form 2 (Chum Kiu)... which should be within your 1st year, is where you really start your Chi Sau training and close in fighting techniques that focus on sensitivity, trapping your opponent and shutting down his defense and offense. Folks with more training can probably explain it better, but for people to think it's a good idea to get that close to Wing Chun guys would be a mistake. Close range fighting is basically the bread and butter of Wing Chun. They are trained to attack and defend at this range from quite early on.

@@Aero5000 Close range is definitely the focus. Kung Fu Tea published a lot on the actual history of Wing Chun, rather than the creation myth, and there are reasons why it works the way it does. I did it for six years, and fought artists from other styles, and that's where the necessity of having learned biu jee becomes clear. It's where you also learn how to make it work for you. The way Donnie Yen fights in these films, he includes a lot of kicks and elbows, which are strangely absent from the training in many schools. They absolutely need to be focused on more though. The armchair warriors seem to think it's all chain punching, and I have to say that the way some schools train is not far from that.

i agree to most of the points, though i also understand why the mu thai guy wanted to gain some distance, wing chun strongest advantage is fighting as near as he can, cause this the core of wing chun. so mu that actually needed more distance than wing chun

Not just Muy Thai has that style of fight but Khmer Martial Art also has that kind fight Called Bokator or try to watch the movie called Jail Break from Cambodia

It's a common misconception that Wing Tsun is not strong in knee and elbow distance. It actually is and has elbow techniques on par with Muay Thai.

Wing Chun is the king of close combat Muay Thai guy was feeling so much pressure inside he tried going to distance kicks/ knees. Usually the closer a Wing Chun user is the more dangerous position you are in

Catching kick under the leg is easy. Step in the direction the kick is going so its going past the point the kici is most effective so you dont break ribs and then catch it. Tho catching it has dangers too. I kick a lot and am prepared for a catch. I either jump forward and elbow your face and then clinch or do a 360 jumping backheel kick with my still free leg. That kick wont mis. Its easy to aim and you still hold my other leg.
