One of the many things I love about Jackie Chan fight scenes: he's been vocal before about his dislike for scenes where a hero takes on 20 bad guys but is really just fighting them one at a time while the rest are dancing around in the background. So when Jackie fights a group of bad guys, there are significant portions where he's fighting 3 or 4 simultaneously, and for the rest of the time he's using the environment and choreography to create logical reasons for why they can't all attack him at once.

His fight scenes also make it clear that in those moments where he hasn't been able to break away from the group of enemies, he's taking hits and struggling to find a way to get out of that situation. The fact that the hero gets hurt even while fighting seemingly "perfectly" simply because his defenses can't be everywhere at once, only reinforces the idea that his fights are more real than most.

Dude, this one and the tower scene from Project A are one of the best stunts from Jackie Chan back in the 80s. I am so excited and eager to see your reaction on his other stunts. He puts his own life on the line for our entertainment, no other actor has come close to doing that other than Yuen Biao or Sammo Hung.

If you think extreme self defense like his character's situation, broken glass is about the most damaging and easily available improvised weapon you can get. Die hard, with Bruce Willis, also has a scene with shattered glass used to create sort of a "mine field"

They had like 16 hours to shoot the mall fight. I think a lot of the scenes were one shot or just a few. I think I remember reading in his book that the entire scene was hastily shot. They practiced in a warehouse for weeks and then did the real thing in the mall between closing and opening. They had to get the mall looking pretty before it re-opened the next day.

Jackie got seriously hurt doing the fire pole gag as his hands were burnt and he hit his head bad. After doing this he slept for few hours in a car getting to his next movie location, he tried walking out but collapsed on the sidewalk and was rushed to the hospital with burns and a nasty fracture. It’s why he punched out the bad guy and mauled the bad guy at the end of the movie. He honestly couldn’t think and randomly started punching things. He was completely out of it. They played it up in the next film though as a joke to change filming location outside Hong Kong. So it worked out.

I went to this shopping mall in HK. When watching this film I recognise the locations quite well. The criterion Police Story 1 and 2 is packed full of extra goodies on the blu ray. Well worth getting. The transfer looks amazing as if it was filmed yesterday.

I'm from the UK and later on this month (September 2022) we're about to get the first three _Police Story_ movies in a 4K Ultra HD box-set (the first two are already available on Blu-Ray from the same company: Eureka! Entertainment, so _Police Story III: Supercop_ is due to be released by itself on Blu-Ray at the same time). Yesterday I saw all three of them in a cinema triple-bill in London and those were 4K remasters; if the quality of those is anything to go by, those forthcoming 4K Ultra HD versions are going to rock! I also visited the Wing-On Plaza when I went to Hong Kong in 2015; it was quite eerie being there and seeing just how far down it was from the uppermost balcony - wow!

According to the autobiography _I Am Jackie Chan: My Life in Action,_ during his pre-stardom time a stunt co-ordinator told Jackie a rule that he abided by ever since: something about never asking someone to do something that he was not willing to do himself (cannot remember the exact wording from the book off-hand, but it was something like that).

safety was always the priority but so was it to make the scenes look as real as possible. these guys just know how to fall without taking any serious injuries, they got some cover under their clothes too for protection and the furnishes etc are mostly even prepped to break easier. you can see it in jackie chan my stunts, one of his documentaries explaining many of his stunts

I am quite sure, he said he hadn't the budget for safer stunts on 'my stunts' just because they could be more dangerous doesn't mean they are safe ... So i disagree that safety was priority, i think also injury list will proove this ;) And a normal movie would cancel to expensiv stunts, if they couldn't be done safe, or reduce other to get the budget (all the shattered 'glas' is ie quite expensiv). This real action hero Jackie was makes hier movie better, but to be honest i am quite happy that no one else do this to this extreme since i don't want to hear about death or disabled actors just for my entertainment.

@@christiang5209 yes, thats true too, but for many stunts, they just couldnt do much about safety, except laying a matress on the floor or something. they still did it as safe as possible with a very low budget, they covered him with some protectors underneath his clothes etc but that was it. just like the jump on the escalator, he explained that too, that it was dangerous, if the escalator comes against his direction, so they changed its direction to go up, to make the landing safer.

In the mean time, Tom Cruise wants to take credit for doing his own stunts after he say Jacki Chan come to American doing Rumble in the Bronx. When he takes off all of his protections when doing the stunts, then he can pretend he is on par enough with Jackie to claim he is doing his own stunts.

The bus stunt early in the film put the stunt guys in hospital. If I recall correctly, they hadn't taken the then-new anti-lock brakes into account when stopping the bus, so they just sort of fell out of the window and dropped, rather than flying out as planned.

You were correct: that was a double for Jackie in the bit where his character is riding the motorcycle through those glass cabinets. The double in question, according to Bey Logan's audio commentary on the Hong Kong Legends DVD release, was Blackie Ko Shau-Liang (1953-2003). It is also not Jackie at the bit where that same bike first knocks Jackie's character down onto his back (7:05).

Jackie was quite open in interviews about using a double if he wasn't trained in something that could result in severe injury to another that would be caused by him not knowing how to do something. Ie: flying a plane, expertly crashing a car or safely running into another human being with a motorcycle.

2:20 stunt was done in one take. I can’t remember what injuries he got, but either way it still hurts to look at them. Every fall, I groan and flinch away every time I watch it. The pole slide, he also burned the skin on his hands.

I remember reading some interesting facts about Jackie, he had over a dozen time broken spine, and each time the doctors said that he would not be able to walk anymore, for the rest of his life in a wheelchair, and after 2 months he was running and jumping,WTF whit this dude.

One of my favourite fight scenes is the final fight in "The Young Master". It is brutal and always gets a visceral reaction from me. Not just for safety. Sometimes using a fake leg is to help with choreography that would otherwise be physically/anatomically impossible (as demonstrated in _Jackie Chan: My Stunts_ when a fake leg was used in a specific section from the rooftop fight in _Who Am I?)._

I don’t know if anyone else has picked up on it, but Brandon Lee pays homage to Jackie in Rapid Fire by doing a similar motorcycle stunt (first fight scene) and part of the clothes rack stunt (toward the end in the of Rapid Fire). Maybe you can react to scene from that movie some day. An underrated martial arts movie overall.

That is one of JC greatest fight scenes and stunts from him and another movie I would recommend is Armour or God and scene with the amazonian women. One of the greatest scenes in that film.

In first police story Jackie played a character that is basically him . There is a running Joke through the whole movie where he tries to cheat on his girlfriend . He really went all in with his character.

Hey, if you get a chance, take a look at Jackie's "Operation Condor" (aka "Armour of God 2) -- easily one of his best, and highly underrated! The entire wind tunnel sequence at the end is glorious!
