I could hear you inhale when standing up and exhale as you roll. I sometimes hold my breath when rolling. I'll try to breathe deeply like you do. Thank you so much for the great video!

My biggest fear with forward rolls is because when I was just starting fifteen years ago, a yudansha threw me and I broke my collar bone. since then for the last fifteen years they have been hard for me to do.

Sensei I met you some years ago when you went to seminar here to Chile while I was training under Jorge Rojo Sensei but this movement is my Achilles heel. I always end up with excruciating pain in my lower back, especially in my lower back ribs. This has been so painful and frustrating for me that I had to stop practicing Aikido. I feel awful and I really love Aikido but this pain leaves me out of breath.

Andrew have you tried working with a chiropractor? The right physician might be able to help the present condition of your lower ribs over time.

MARTIAL FUSION I was so concerned about it that I even had some x-rays taken but there was nothing there. It’s only in my right lower back rib side. You might understand that for me being a 4th kyu and being unable to make a fluent Mae ukemi is frustrating as it’s embarrassing. Every time I have to perform a Mae Ukemi I get scared of the pain I’ll feel afterwards.

@@andrewbaker4204 A tip. Try not to look at the floor at the time of making the rolled down your chin to the chest and look back, not on the floor; When I managed to apply that my UKEMI deeply improved.

Investigate if you perhaps have iliosacral hip displacement. It doesn't normally show up on xrays. It will cause a pain up one side of the spine of the lower back. You will need to find a physio who knows about it and has handled the condition before. It does require joint manipulation to get it back in, not just relaxing therapy. In some cases it might be trapping a nerve and then you get problems down you legs. It should only take 1 or 2 sessions to reset to about 90% back in place. It will take a lot longer for the muscles to re-adjust depending how long you have had it but you should get instant relief for most of it. It can occur if you have landed badly after a throw or simply stepping off something with one foot and causing a jolt to dislocate the joint. Worth checking out.

Sensei, no offence here but I am 65 and 1/2 years old and pretty fair shape. The only forward roll that I will be doing is ROLLING out of bed in the morning. peace out
