My advice would be, if you want to make money playing music - DON'T DO IT FOR FREE. Really what's the biggest incentive to not pay musicians to play? So many will do it for free, why pay?!? Just about everyone else at the gig will get paid before the musician. Make music your day and night job. Want to work for free? Go wash dishes, it's great for experience and for exposure. Yeah, right.

I'm now a retired drummer and was pro for a few year in late 80's and what Martin says is spot on .If I had kids Idd advise them not to get into music as it never really benefitted me overall lol just saying.

Dude makes a strong point and definitely changed my mind about working. However, fuck 9-5 Monday through Friday. That's some slave shit. @dukethefool - strong point but not everywhere pays unfortunately. People can always still do it old school and go play on the street with an open case. If you're good, the money will come.

Did he ever think about consulting economists and financial advisors to see all the possible financial problems people encounter? Day jobs do not afford a high standard of living. He better get acquainted with progressive economists and ask them. Just a suggestion before writing books on economic advice.
