She was put in a state of fear and trepidation and that encouraged her to speak out. When she gave the interview, it wasn't a case of self-indulgence, as many people thought, but it was a question of self-preservation, she thought she was a target, she thought from what Bashir said she was under the gun, in the sights of the establishment. I saw both famous Bashir interviews. Watching the Diana one, I didn't observe much noticeable manipulation from Bashir, whatever was going on behind the scenes. However the Michael Jackson interview was the most manipulative long interview I have ever seen. He was obviously setting Jackson up from start to finish. How he was talking to Jackson himself - easy, not too pushy - was in strong contrast to how he seemed to condemn him in his commentary. After that, I never trusted Bashir to be an objective journalist again. Though I agree with John Ware about right wing politicians and newspapers looking to use things like this as a tool to undermine the BBC and the whole idea of public service broadcasting in the UK.
