Last year we went guitar shopping AB’d d18, d28, and hd28 for several hours. Me and my wife both preferred the d18.

I own both and I find the D18 much louder but I prefer the scooped sound and smoothness of the D28. But it all depends on what type of song you’re playing as they both are so good at different things.

I feel the D-28 has more “shimmer” and treble. The D-18 is wonderful warm and more open. I have both and enjoy the differences.

Both sound great! However, The D-18 sounds a little brighter and louder. I guess there’s a reason why they call it the “Banjo” killer.

I dont know if it is a no-brainer, but in my opinion as an older folk guy, I love the sound of Martin Dreadnoughts of any nomenclature. To choose between these two is not easy, but I would opt for the D-28. I've had a couple of rosewood guitars, and I'm a bit partial to that brighter tone.

I have a D28 and I love it. But the d18 sure sounds nice. It's brighter. I think the 28 is more well balanced

Last year, I purchased both of these guitars new from Sweetwater. I immediately liked the warmth, and MUCH BETTER BASS of the D-18. It has a full well balanced tone with great mid-range and highs as well. The D-28 too my ear was all midtone and some highs with NO low-end. Of course all the professional reviewers always tell you that the D-28 has more low-end, is louder, etc., etc. Well, not to my ear! I really wonder whether they are all just parroting the same thing and have ever really played them both side by side. For several months, I played them both. I actually played the D-28 a bit more, as I was really trying to convince myself to like it. I finally decided that I just couldn't convince myself and sold it to a local Guitar Center for a substantial loss. Moral to the story, if at all possible, play them both side by side before you buy!

The D28 has far less mid range than the D18, you ears are broken

Perhaps your's does, but mine wasn't much different in midrange from the D-18 and decidedly different on the low end. And again, I spent many hours playing them side by side and switchng back and forth. How about you, have you done that? :)

​@@Tarnway0412 First time I've heard anyone describe the differences between the two like that and I've played' worked on and repaired dozens and dozens of martin guitars over the past 45 years. What kind of strings were you using? Same strings on Both guitars?

I was using Martin Lifespan 2.0 13-56 Medium Treated MA550 on both. Both had new strings put on along with truss adjustments at the same time by a very skilled luthier in my town. So, the setup was identical on both. My main issue with the D-28 was it didn't have any good low-end when compared to the D-18. I've since heard from other who also felt this way about D-28s.

Owned a D18 in the '70's. Amazing sound. My desert island guitar between the D28 and D18- the D18. I currently own neither and play a Taylor koa. Very different. I do like the D41, D42, D45 series. But the real guitar secret- no two examples of the same model are the same. Which is why I hesitate to buy a guitar I haven't played.

I went to my closest Guitar Center to purchase a d18. I already have an hd-28 and d-35. I came home with a Gibson j-45.

For my ear I find that I ageee with you regarding the tones of these two guitars. That said, it would have been easier for me with just an ok ear, if when you went back and forth from one to the other, you would play the same passages. Food for thought. Thanks for the info and good job

The background music really helped. By themselves, I preferred the D18. But in a mix, it depends on whether on not you want your guitar to blend in or stand out.

I have a D-18. Best guitar I have ever played. The sound is IMMACULATE. And I prefer the 18 over the 28 in sound tests.

I hear exactly the opposite in comparing the two. The D18 has a shimmering clarity, whereas the D28 has a richer sound with more harmonic content, reminiscent of a grand piano.

Its about picking the one that instantly makes you feel like you can play better and opens new doors. The tone will click with your ears. Loved my 00016 but knew I found the one when I played the D35. Price is irrelevant

These things are best evaluated after years of aging. These sound nothing like the pre war ones but few can afford that price point. As for quality of build they have been the standard for over 100 years. The one that is the best depends on the skill of the player.

They sound a lot alike, a few extra points to the d28 it has a slightly warmer sound. To me the big difference is the wider neck width on the d28.

They have the same neck profile and neck width. The big difference besides the back and sides wood is the Standard D28 is non scalloped bracing.

My old ears tell me the D-18 is more precise but not harsh. The D-28 is mellower but not muddy. Both are nice.

Sounded like 2 guitars that have yet to be played in accompanied a distracting drum track that kept me from hearing the tone of each respective guitar. For me, the winner is the HD28, which isn’t here.

D-18 will always sound better through a mic/recording equipt. D-28 is a beast sonically live to the naked ear

I don't own a single guitar that cost me more than $800. I've played more expensive guitars at a store, but never bought one. I can hear the difference, but with my playing level, the guitar won't make me sound that much better.

I know I'll get some crap for saying this but I think it's ridiculous to be this picky about guitars. I've been playing 40 years and own $300 Fender's to $4,000 Martin's and the price to sound difference between all my guitars is certainly not worth it. I got caught in the hype which is why I spent a fortune. People are amazed when I pick up a $300 guitar and play just the same as my Martin. 90% of people aren't going to know a difference because it's so slight to normal people. We get caught up into spending money because we all do it to ourselves and to each other. That being said, I wouldn't be caught on stage without my Martin, just because I'd worry what other guitarists would think. 😂

At the end of the day it varies guitar by guitar. I play a lot of classical and finger style guitar and perceive the differences as soon as I start playing. There’s a smaller margin of era in the high end guitars and feel in them so people gravitate towards what their hero’s play. I gravitate towards the individual guitars responsiveness

I respect this take, and you're right, most people can't tell. But you, the player, can tell, and to me that makes it worth it. Does my D18 sound ten times better than my Epiphone at ten times the price, of course not. But it does sound noticeably better, and it is 10 times more fun to play. Add it all up and to me it's worth the investment. But to each their own.
