A few questions 1) Why is the standing charge going up again? The cables and pipes to my home haven’t changed and I’m not getting better quality gas/electric. They are not building better power plants or cables so is this purely an offset for people cutting use? 2) I’m with E.on who crow about 100% renewable energy however they charge the fossil fuel rate. Why? Because they buy from the wholesale market? So it isn’t all renewable then is it! And how can they guarantee it if it’s all the same pipes and cables.

I can't understand why gas prices are not going down significantly when the wholesale price has gone down massively other than our government's decision to get rid of Gas storage facilities, so they have to lock in a price. Subsidise bills will still be paid by the hapless UK taxpayer... it's just a case of when and if interest. Fact: the price for oil (and therefore fuel) has gone down and this NOT being passed to the consumer. Fact: the UK government is reaping the rewards via taxation. Why are costs being held up? As pointed out in this video, the standing charge is rising on top of this... NOT USE... This is screwing every energy user and the government's response to this is defer the problem. If I'm wrong then tell me.

Notwithstanding, the government would have been warned in advance of such rises and if (I have to say if, as the government's current goal clearly repeated in the budget is to collect coffers) the government were attempting to act on behalf of their constituents then they would have negotiated down the prices offered to suppliers. If one was to carefully (and painstakingly) outline every tax thrust upon UK citizens one would see that to add to said burdens only offers frustration for some and adverse life changing decisions for others.

@@redacted629 not quite sure how any government would "negotiate down prices". The price is the price on the international market. It's still obscene that while consumer subsidy is being taken away - the electricity prices are only dropping by a ridiculously tiny fraction. When are we going to get transparent pricing? I am with a renewable electricity only supplier but still paying prices pegged to kwh prices for gas. How can this be legally enforceable? How can there be a genuinely competitive market between fossil fuel generation v renewables until these pricing mechanisms are decoupled? As a consumer crusader we need you to advocate for the fairest mechanism change. To make the electricity market for renewables transparent and competitive - to support and accelerate our energy transition. Otherwise, what will you be telling your children in 10-15 years time? The £400 payment was for 6 months only, so you could argue we have just gone from an effective EPG of £1700 and now to £2500, so that’s a 47% increase. For ease of calculation, I will assume the £2500 will be in place for 6 months, now if you average them (£1700 and £2500) out over the year it is equal to an EPG of £2100.

Exactly. I think people are forgetting they will still see an increase of £400 to their bill. I think they will be shocked

@@joniandre10 Am on pre-pay for electric. Because of the £400 over the last 6 months I haven't had to top up the meter in the last 8 months and I still will have about 3 months worth of electric on the meter at the end of this month(I have only used about £56 to £60 a month average the last 6 months). So I will be okay until July 1st(I topped it up before the £400 started) not that I am bragging or anything.

@@gmo4250 My electric/gas usage is no where near £2500. At a rough guess I would say it is closer to £1900 a year at present.

Suppose fuel will start increasing now, as summer comes and people become more mobile. The wealth transfer merrygoround doesn't stop, it just shifts around for maximum devastation for average people.

Absolutely zero for small Business government help stopping end of March and our rates are far higher than domestic. Watch small Businesses close.

Great news. Now all we need to do is apply the same pressure to get the utilities renationalised.

Oh crikey no. All that will result in is no innovation and sclerosis in customer service. The likes of Octopus energy with their innovative tariffs would be impossible

Ofgem says it has agreed to allow the National Grid to raise an additional £20bn over the next 40 years from customer bills to pay for the huge upgrades the grid needs. The 64% increase in the standing charges for Electricity and Gas is designed to hit the Elderly and low users and subsidises all the heavy users disproportionally.

Thank you Martin Lewis for speaking up on our behalf. 💯🙏👏👏👏👏✊✌ It is interesting to find that the prices the foreign owned energy companies (are allowed to) charge in the UK are far higher than in their home territories. And, I believed it was wrong for the government to pay the energy cost supplements directly to the energy companies; for them to make whoopee with. Rather than to the customer. So, a supposed form of financial help, to benefit the least well off appeared contrived to benefit the best off...
