Why do they get any? Is it because they live a long way from parliament ? I think if they live within 50 mile radius of London they should get nothing no second home allowance etc. The rest of us are supposed to commute by train they can get discount on their second class annual train ticket. 😊 there thats saved the tax payer a few quid 😊

Every company I have ever worked for pays expenses, why should I or anyone else be out of pocket to do my/their job? If I need to go to a meeting for work in a different part of the country to where I am based, why should I have to pay for that? Use some common sense. Also is an MP's salary really that outrageous? These are the men and women that are meant to be running the country, should they not get an above average wage? What needs to happen, is stopping MPs having second jobs and being on the boards of companies while in office. Being an MP should be your sole interest for those 5 years

Three course meal in the House of Commons for just over £10, according to Yhoo. An estimated £7 million food subsidies a year, courtesy of the tax payers. No need for that, for crying out loud. No reason for them not to buy their own lunch out of the pay they get. Meanwhile, the elderly, and many others, will be choosing between food and heat this winter.

I have lived all my life without heating from when I grew up till now at nearly 65. I don't want central heating in my house, we just have one oil less electric free standing radiator in the living room and that's it. If we do get cold we put extra layers on and that's fine. I have gotten accustomed now to the cold and couldn't think of anything worse than having central heating.

At the moment pensioners living on more than £11300 a year stand to lose the winter fuel allowance. The minimum legal wage is £11.44 per hour. The standard working week is 40 hours a week. 40 x £11.44 = £457.60 a week or £23759 per year. In other words Rachel Reeves thinks that a pensioner who may be living on LESS than HALF the legal MINIMUM wage for a standard working week is 'wealthy' enough to lose the winter payment !

Due to some of the shady claims some years ago, someone was appointed to oversee. They ensured she lost her job! The concept is fair to ensure anyone can afford to become an MP. But now MPs who have always lived within reasonable commuting distance from London are able to purchase a second home and we pay the mortgage, furniture, utilities (including heating) and travelling expenses. There were some restrictions placed on employing family members. We pay for electronics, usually updated before an election. Tightening the rules about MPs expenses would cover a lot of the money needed to reinstate the pensioners allowance for heating. Why are they not paying their heating from their salary like the rest of us? Why when their time as an MP ends are they allowed to keep the second home we have paid for?

No ifs, no buts. If we are going to have the thing at all, it should be universal. Child Allowance (for some reason, referred to as a benefit, these days) should be universal. The number of people living on the edge of this is huge, people who will go without, and others who are entitled but won't or can't fill in the forms. A Gordon Brown style bureaucratic nightmare ! Better still, how about scrap it altogether and just have an as-of-right increase in State Pension. Let us also see the abolition of the standing charge. Mine has quadrupled in the last few years. It just defeats any attempt to reduce waste. Why bother when the standing charge is so high. If the grid is not to collapse because of the fuel demands of immigrants, and the self-satisfied rich with their very, very, dangerous firebomb EVs, then the native population have got to cut back.

"If there were any empathy and humanity in those companies" - is one of the causes of this issue; other than government policy. You clearly understand the situation so I know you aren't naïve, and you speak up for the poorer so I know you speak from a pure place. Commercial companies will (usually) make as much profit as possible under the rules provided by the government. I haven't checked myself but I accept your figure on profits - which means the government will be taxing that. That amount of profit would imply a massive operating turnover, I'd suggest that would imply an overly bloated organisation (similar to public sector - but with the government able to mostly offload responsibility) so a huge number of staff each paying taxes to the government. We pay tax on our energy so the higher the bills are the more revenue goes to the government - just the same as with vehicle fuel. The government, through the MSM, partly blames Russia for the price increase; Russia never stopped selling - the UK choose to stop buying. (policy box ticked) Despite the government being solely responsible for for these price increases they try and gaslight us to think that the global market supply & geo politics (as presented by the Western MSM) are the cause of insecurity in the market as the reason to put our faith the wind blowing or the sun shining (policy box ticked) If I were a cold hearted energy company executive or self-serving politician; it's hard to see how I would behave any differently 🤔

My husband and I both only have State pension but pension credit can only be granted if joint weekly income is less than £325.00 per week two state pensions added together means we are over that amount. A friend has said her pension credit is just under £19 per week but she will get an additional 16.67 per month (£3.85 per week) winter fuel allowance and she gets almost all her rent paid and little to no council tax because she lives alone. Therefore because my husband and I have remained married and live together we are penalised and have to pay full rent and council tax and no winter fuel payment this year because we cannot claim benefits. Is this really what working and paying taxes for 50 years gets you? Asylum seekers, illegal immigrants etc etc get more government hand outs and that is where the money to fill the black hole the chancellor has needs to be taken from. Stop people working in UK claiming child benefit for children living in other countries. Stop paying heating allowances etc., for MP’s second homes. When deciding to stand for election they are aware they might need somewhere to stay whilst attending government duties in London and their salaries reflect that so never mind giving them all salary increases use that to fill the black hole.

Thank you, Martin!. Together with my neighbours who, like myself, are pensioners, we live in 2 bedroom bungalows that are in council band "D". Many of us are just over the thresholds for pension credits so with your scheme of using tax bands A to C we would still not be eligible. Can I point out that people living in flats or in the outer boroughs are probably the only areas that have A to C council bands. If you live within London or the outer London suburbs there are practically no A to C tax bands so many pensioners would still not be eligible! There was a reason why bands A to D were chosen, and if the government accepts your scheme maybe they should keep to these bands. I am sure the chancellor would gladly accept your scheme because she is aware of the council bands and knows that many pensioners live in band D properties.

Hypocrisy is invisible if you think your preferred enemy is being shafted, but point out that reform is needed even in the shape of voting for anyone else not of the 2 parties and you're the fool. I lean centre to right just, but have no issue pointing out Tory BS, but the condescension from Labours base is only going to backfire. Surprisingly little. Four billion a year. That sounds huge, but it's not much by government spending standards - annual state pension payments are 125 billion. So the annual cost of processing asylum claims, housing those being processed and supporting those who are successful in their application is about 3.2% the cost of the state pension.

How come the working living/minimum wage is around £11 an hour, this is deemed to be how much someone needs to live on today. A pensioner is on the equivilent of around £5.25 an hour if they worked a 39 hour week, how come this is seen as enough to live on today. When the national minimum wage is said to be more than double the amount someone needs to live on.

@@bertross9727 Your in cloud cuckoo land mate, many many pensioners do not receive housing benifit, council tax paid or any other benifits. Only pensioners that qualify for pension credit are entitled to the things you say, pensioners that dont receive these benifits have to pay full rent & full council tax & full everything else come to that. All of my 50 years working life my flat working week was 39hrs a week & still is for a lot of workers ( by the way it was 40hrs week when i started work at 15 years old in 1966 ), but based on your 37.5hrs week it punps the effective hourly rate of a pensioners income up from £5.25 an hour to a heady £5.33 hour, whoopy i wont know what to do with that extra 8p an hour. I know I can put the 8p an hour towards the £300 we have lost in heating allowance. The average energy user under the new price cap is going to see an increase of around £140 - 150 a year, pensioners increase will be closer to £500 a year. Also a couple of years back under the pandemic, the triple lock pension should of risen by 8.5%, Theres Coffee welshed on the triple lock & gave 3.1% instead of the due 8.5%. Pensioners are an easy touch for goverments, there is a total miss conception about all these so called rich pensioners, there are some very rich pensioners around. They are few & far between the 12 million pensioners that there are, there are quite a lot of very poor pensioners out of the 12 million.
