I saw Martin Mull live with a friend of mine way back in 1975. My friend sent me this clip and expressed the ongoing shock we feel when we realize so many of the entertainers we grew up with are in their 70s & 80s! But that’s OK. I’ll be there too in 10-15 years anyway.

I know what you are saying about mortality. I saw Mull in 1974 opening for Robert Klein. He was a ‘no name’ at the time, but boy he immediately won the audience over. I was so happy he made it in the business. He deserved it.

I saw Martin Mull in Tucson around 1979 and saw him perform this song in his one-man stage act sitting in a comfy chair and old lamp to his side. Always hysterically funny. One of many great performers from northern Ohio, now drained of brains, seemingly. I left in 1978. Best decision I ever made.

The level of ability here is completely off the charts. One guy is a comic who could easily have had a career as a pro guitarist and the other guy is in the top 5 or 10 guitarists of all time. And yet, when you watched this, it was all “Aw shucks!” No big deal. Incredible.

This is a funny as hell composition by Martin Mull. The live album version was always entertaining. But with Campbell doing the hot licks here as well as singing cornball harmony, it ramps up the song by new heights. Glenn is just winging it the entire time, but he kills it. Wow! Just wow!

Okay well Wikipedia says that Vito Russo wrote that "the film is permeated with hatred for gays" and that it was "the perfect anti-feminist homophobic statement to usher in the age of Ronald Reagan". Rotten Tomatoes summation: "a man (Martin Mull) resists the California fads that his wife (Tuesday Weld), friends and Marin County neighbors embrace." But it sounds from your comment as though you are trying to make Martin Mull into a shill for what you don't like about present day California. Personally I was marinated in Smothers Brothers and everything Norman Lear ever made. I never saw this movie but I think it probably didn't age well. 🤪

Mull did solo stand-up at Emory University sometime in the early 70's. I believe he was connected with someone who taught there. I had never before and never since laughed so hard and so long that I hurt. I don't remember what I was laughing at but I've never experienced that since. I also remember one brief song snippet he did, making fun of the pain of the wealthy--a blues number--something like, "I woke up this morning, both my cars were gone...I was so upset I threw my drink across the lawn." Sorry to hear he has passed away.

Great comment. It seems that Mull settled in to this number after a verse or two, when Glen’s superb fills began to carry the song. Freed Martin up to focus on his vocal and rhythm playing.
@ayeyouhenio21172 жыл бұрын
Mull composed the song. . . words and music . . it was his song, and I agree that he made it fun. . . as he did with all of his recorded compositions. I'm thinking that Mulls' intent was to poke fun at those country boys blessed with that raw musical talent. . . .period. To Glen's credit (assuming that he interpreted the lyrics the same as I). . . choosing this song to play with Mull showed a humble/self depricating side to him. Either that. . . or the humor escaped him. . . which makes the whole thing ironic. Reading too deeply into this? Yup. . . most likely I am😋 Love Glen AND Marty!

Mull is a creative genius as far as lyrics and comedy go, and plays the roles of the very unlikable great in moveis. He wrote this song. Glen is not su much a writer as he is a guitarist (one of the best ever). Most of his hits were written by others, but he just had a knack for making them hits, a great voice, and superb guitar. He was also part of the Wrecking Crew, he has the ability to do studio work for all kinds of writers and musicians, he was multi dimensional, he could play with anyone. Great mix to have those two talents work together on this one.
