The OM really is the ultimate Swiss Army knife of acoustic guitars. The 000 body lends itself to a balanced sound and the long scale gives the OM power and projection. You can string them with lights and play them fingerstyle or with a regular pick, or you can string them with mediums and they are great for flatpicking.

Thanks for sharing, William! Do check that your OM is suitable for mediums, sitka tops+scalloped aren't all suited for mediums. Adirondack tops are a different story, our Laurence Juber OMC-44K likes Juber custom mediums!

That sounds pretty damn good even with my shitty ear plugs. I swapped my mates OM28 with my HD28 for a couple of weeks. OM28 is a treat. The ultimate acoustic guitar in many ways from my perspective.

Thanks for the great video. I recently played a OM28 in my guitar shop and was blown away. What you do think suits better for singing along with it, the OM28 or the HD28, which I always wanted before I played the OM 😅

Thanks for watching! I think it comes down to how you are singing and projecting. If you're loud then the HD might match you better. OM it's better suited for normal volume singing, will accompany dynamics better!

If you can only own one Martin, probably go with this one. If you can own three, get a OM-28, a 00-18, and a D-18 or D-28

Hey I have a question about the OM scale length being 25.4 … well my question is I recently purchased a Martin 00028VS -12 fret with a 25.4 scale length but it’s a 000…. I don’t understand this discrepancy with the scale length on the 00028VS with a 25.4 scale length …. Any response would be appreciated. I love the guitar by the way. I’m simply confused about why the 00028 -14 fret are 24.9 and the 00028VS -12 fret is 25.4 …. It’s an inconsistency if what I understand about Martin scale length is accurate.

Hi Steven, good question! A complicated answer but in short: The 14 fret 000 and 24.9 scale length have been a combination since the early 30's, the 30 years prior to that 12 fret 000s were commonly 25.4.

No worries, mate! Technically an OM would be classified as a 14 fret in 25.4 scale. You have an example of an original 000 design, a harkening back to Martins 2nd Golden Era!

@@studio1vintageguitars Oh okay so it being a 14 fret also determines if it’s an OM , I actually have another Martin 000 that has a 26.44” scale length and it’s a real cannon of a guitar also . It’s a Martin 00012-16C nylon string guitar with a cutaway and electronics. I don’t know what kind of luck others have had with this particular model but I got lucky and got a great one… funny thing about this purchase is I had no intention of ever buying a nylon guitar as I had never played a great one before. I went to look at one a guitar tech had on consignment just for something to do and it came home with me after about 5 minutes of playing it… now it’s the main guitar I reach for, it’s been a learning experience for me… lol Thanks for your time and the information.

If you want to have a chat about it send us a message through our website and we can Skype/facetime and go through it all. The Scale length of 25.4 determines it is an OM, if 14-fret. If the guitar is a 12 fret with 25.4 scale length you most likely have a 1900-30 000 style guitar. Side note: On the spec sheet, the body shape of an OM is referred to as a 000 body size. Think of it this way: The 14-fret was first introduced in 1929 as 25.4 on Martin's new body style the OM/Orchestral Model, the 14-fret neck was then applied to the 12-fret D-28, making the D-28 we know today. To accommodate the 14 fret neck Martin changed the body shapes removing the slope shoulder and changing the waist. It was the development of the 14 fret neck that changed everything, the various scale lengths had already been established. Nylons are a whole other story! And just to add to the confusion; the new 00-15M, 000-15M, and 000-15SM are all 25.4 scale length. Give us a call!
