Picking up two popular and typical acoustic guitar shapes, Orchestra Model (OM) and Dreadnought and I compare the shapes and sound. In the end of the video, I played two songs to share the sound.
1. From Coast to Coast
2. Takibi (Bonfire)
My points are:
Even if those two guitars have different characters, if you keep in mind following things, guitars have more potential for different styles.
1. Changing the setup (action and string gauge)
2. Adjusting how you play each guitar (dynamics etc)
Guitars I used:
Martin OM-42
Martin HD-28
I hope you find helpful information through this video.

I enjoyed both versions of both compositions. I own an 'OM21 Special' that I love to play. Both of yours there are wonderful instruments. I believe that there is truth in the concept that a guitar can sound better over time; even a lesser expensive guitar particularly if it is well made and with a solid top. Something about the wood. I have subscribed and will keep an eye out for more of your posts here. Thank you for this one. -KM

I actually lowered the action and lightened the strings on my dreadnaught (like you mentioned) and it did play MUCH better for my style of playing (I am a fingerstylist). But I play mostly sitting down so even though I am a big guy (6'4") it would mess up my shoulder when playing for any length of time. So I found myself playing less and less. I switched to OM and it was like magic happening. My Taylor just melts into my body and becomes a part of me, as opposed to me fighting with it. And the major dimensions are identical.. the SHAPE is different with a smaller waist which makes how it sits when playing lower, and is HUGE concerning comfort. The neck profile also helps in playability but that carries across no matter what body shape you get... but folks should always take that into account as well. This all said, if you don't need the volume, I always recommend the OM. I thought I wanted and NEEDED the dreadnaught, but I was.... wrong. Wonderful playing my friend. Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your insight into the musical nuances of a dreadnought. I love my dread for fingerstyle and feel like there is so much emphasis on bluegrass and flat picking. I have a D18, and it can definitely bring it in any strumming and flat picking styles, but it also shines in warmth with the right fingerstyle touch.

Extremely helpful video! I am getting more into fingerpicking and I was becoming convinced that I needed an OM, but hearing your explanation and then getting to hear those songs back to back showed me that I really do appreciate the way the bass in the dreadnaught supports the melody. The OM sounds a little thin, especially when being played as solo guitar. Also, beautiful playing!

Hi Hiroja. Thanks for playing your lovely compositions; your playing is highly refined and sweet. Obviously we all hear differently and have different tastes. From my perspective - listening to your comparison on a good system - the OM pales in comparison to the lush sounds of the dreadnought, across the entire tonal range of each instrument. Thanks for your excellent comparison. I'll have to check out more of your music. Best regards, Paul

Really love your tune Bonfire! Very nice. I started on classical, then went to double bass, then acoustic guitar, then electric guitar. You make such a good point about approaching a single guitar from all angles instead of approaching it the way the shops or the marketers want us to. There are plenty of amazing recordings that can remind us that a dreadnought can be a great fingerstyle guitar and vice versa. In the end it can be challenging to have one guitar set up to do all things. Now I have a D set up heavy for flatpicking and an OM set up for both plectrum and fingerstyle.

I find it very hard to decide between an OM and a Dreadnought. Normally I would think the OM would suit better a complex and meticulous playstyle like yours, but I found that the Dreadnought, on the contrary, came to enlighten the bass notes in a delightful way.

If I would have to choose one, I would go with OM or OOO because they are comfortable and fit with our body well compared to dreadnought. I think it is important as if the instrument is comfortable to hold, you can play longer.

Great video! To my ears dreadnoughts have a much more boomy tone. Like much more focused in the lower frequencies. Ans OMs are more focused in the higher frequencies. Furthermore the dreadnought seems to have a lot more sustain to me, and obviously it has much more volume. I like how the OM is more comfortable sitting down, and I also find it to be comfortable standing up, but I adjust the strap of the guitar to make it hang a bit higher than I would with a dreadnought. I also like how when using an OM with a strap, it doesn't seem to weigh much compared to a dreadnought, so the strap doesn't seem to pull down much on the shoulder. I know people like to say that dreadnought is for certian styles, and OM is for certian styles. Like for example, people might say that the dreadnought is good for strumming and flatpicking, and OM is good for fingerpicking, but I don't totally agree with this. I like using an OM for strumming, because I sing while palying covers of songs, and I find the OM has an advantage because it has less volume than a dreadbought, and thus leaves more room for my voice. But perhaps I could also just use a dreadnought, but simply play in a much more delicate manner to achieve the same effect. The guitar definatly makes a difference to the tone, but so does the technique of the player.

I prefer the OM from what I'm hearing. The playability in the lap is also something I'm considering. At home the dreadnought just fells so large where it hits the arm and it leans down.. but I do need to try this standing up and see how they feel. The OM looks so comfortable there in the video.

I agree with tradition in that a 00 or 000 / auditorium body style is best for fingerpicking because they tend to have all the strings even in volume and are more responsive to touch. Hammer-ons / pull-offs, harmonics etc. can be done with minimal effort. The notes jump off the fretboard for you. You have to hit those notes harder to produce them on something like a dread or jumbo. Dreads and jumbos also tend to have 3rd and 4th strings that aren't quite as loud as the others, especially on cedar tops. Lastly, if you're a guitar playing singer, a dread or jumbo can be so loud and produce so much bass that you find it difficult to sing over if you have a rather delicate voice, like Roy Orbison for instance. I have a baritone (jumbo body) tuned with light gauge strings C to C that I can't sing over very well at all.
@HiroyaTsukamotoMusic

Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this. You have a great view and it is interesting that you mention about using dreadnought for singer songwriter style. Yes, it might bother with too much bass, but I sometimes use lighter gauge for bottom string to balance it out.

As a beginner who does not know a whole lot just yet, I like the sound of the dreadnaught better but as a beginner who needs easier playability, it seems the OM for me is a better choice. I own a Fender Strat and a Yamaha acoustic dreadnaught but now I am looking for a smaller acoustic to learn on. I could hear the difference between the Dreadnaught and the OM even with KZbin's audio compression not helping things. I wish I knew how to put into words the differences I heard...the only word I can think of is that the OM sounds more muffled. Not as vibrant but still sounds really good. Thanks for the comparison Hiroya.

I'm 69 years old, got a helluva lot of acoustic guitars to think back over........what I would say to you, is.......the most beautiful guitar I ever heard was an "OM", as you call it, Hiroya - (there is a question of our words, 60 years ago, for the same guitars today).......the make was a Guild, played by Bert Jansch, it had an incredibly beautiful individual tone.......all I remember musicians referring to was "the female body shape" (the OM) + "the chord box" (your Dreadnought)......we did know these are called Dreadnoughts, but they were called "chord boxes" disdainfully, real musicians, musicians' musicians......showed off they didn't like "chord boxes", "for nothing but strumming"........Guild had a bigger image in the 1960s & 1970s, they suffered financially, possibly with the advent of Ovation guitars (look at the clip of film on KZbin of Glen Campbell talking on British TV, to talk show host Michael Parkinson, about his Ovation, I think that might have been very damaging to other guitar companies, with only Gibson & Fender surviving - another good make of acoustic guitar was Fylde, you would find them very interesting).......anyway, I enjoy these KZbin series, Hiroya, I'll watch out for more. 6:38

First of great playing and compositions! I have to admit that the dreadnought here sounds better through my serious Bose headphones....I know OM's are suppose to be the better for fingerstyle, but there have been so many fingerstyle songs recorded in the 60's and 70's with D-28/35's....especially in alternate tunings. I too struggle with which is better and have both too. The OM I have is sweeter, more defined, balanced and certainly more comfy sitting, but the dread has that projection and power even when played softly. Nice work Hiroya

I know Hiroya was demonstrating that body shapes alone shouldn't determine what suits a particular right hand playing style but am I right in thinking (judging by the body colours) that the dreadnought had mahogany back and sides and the OM was rosewood. This would also influence the sound. For me the the first song being higher and brighter sounded clearer on the OM and the second sounded warmer on the dreadnought.

Hey Hiroya, I came to listen to this comparison, but I was distracted by how pretty those songs are. Great job! Both sound great, OM would probably be my choice because it is more intimate of an instrument imo which is my favorite aspect of guitars.

I just purchased an OM-28 Marquis to pair with a D-45 and I was surprised that I liked the dreadnought sound better on both pieces. The more resonant low notes gave a piano-esque 3 dimensional sound. Whereas the OM I felt like communicated the melody more clearly but I couldn't hear the bass resonance as much. I really agree with you on experimenting with how to play each instrument. The OM demands a lighter touch and making sure you are strumming in the right place. I also have a nylon stringed Kremona Verea and that one due to the Nylon strings has a different sweet again for where to hit the notes with the right hand. Beautiful original pieces. Do you have a Spotify page?

I liked both instruments. I thought the dreadnought sounded more brittle on the first piece. But upon listening to this again I wondered if it was the subtle difference in hand position of the right hand due to the size difference of the instruments. On my large body instrument, I find I can get a very sweet sound playing over the sound hole. On my short scale 00 instrument I have more flexibility for that sweet sound, and I think it is due to the shorter scale length, 12 fret body join, and the bridge placement. I am fascinated by the possibilities of the large body instrument (use of dynamics, muting bass strings so the top line doesn't get lost, etc.), and I agree that these instruments have been too categorized. I sit in the classical playing position for all my instruments and think it best allows for plucking hand maneuverability, eliminates that pesky upper bout issue, and since I don't have large hands makes playing extensions with the left hand much more possible. I am currently deciding between a 12-fret body join slope shoulder instrument or a traditional 14 fret dreadnought.

@HiroyaTsukamotoMusic 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your feedback and your observation. You have a very good point about hand position. And yes that makes a big difference for the sound and I agree that if you play in classical position, no matter what guitar we use, we can generally get better sound. 12-Fret Slope Shoulder sounds very interesting to me. I feel like that is bit more comfortable than normal dreadnought, but I have never tried before though. Thank you!

Beautiful stuff man, seriously beautiful. Personally I like 000 Martins, especially the 000-18 MD, but in your hands, I think you're getting more out of the dread with your style. Both are terrific instruments, but yeah, your style, at least here, benefits from the bigger body.

I have been learning the guitar on a dreadnaught, I have now bought an OM and I find it much easier to finger chords and change chords. I think that size of guitar for beginners is very important and I would err on the side of smaller. I want to start busking and the OM is more mobile and sounds great when plugged into an amp.

I preferred the OM for both songs. Maybe it's partly because I'm more used to hearing fingerpicking on an OM. That's possible. But they both sounded very good. I thought you might want to try flat picking on both as well. Maybe you would want to change to medium gauge strings to do that. But you would not have to.

The larger body of the dreadnought clearly gives the sound more depth (richer low-end resonances, longer sustain throughout the entire range), but I felt the OM actually was the better choice for Bonfire. The thinner, silky sound of the OM suited the plaintive melody--lonely and bittersweet. The dreadnought ironically sounded too self-assured, as though the instrument itself didn't empathize with the loss being communicated by the song. The comfort of the OM is a significant advantage, especially for someone who plays sitting down -- in a jam with friends in their living room, etc. Thank you for this thoughtful review!

Recently watched a video comparing the D28 and the HD28. Liked the D28 a little better. But can't decide between it and a D 18. What a gorgeous sound from both. Beautiful songs!! Thank you for this. I think most can agree different body shapes and scale lengths have different strengths, but isn’t it likely the manufacturers and certain sponsored reviewers overemphasize these differences to encourage consumers to buy more guitars? Great video. I'm a fan of the dreadnought guitars myself, everything from folk & blues to classic rock & some more guitar-based pop. I love the sound, & feel of these guitars - especially if it has a slightly thinner neck & slightly curved fretboard (handy for thumb-over work). Love your playing style👍 I think the fit depends much on the size of the player too. I've never had issues with dreadnoughts while sitting, but I am quite tall & long arms (in proportion to my size. I still need to bend down if I want to scratch my knee lol)
