Ryan and Lindsay restored the golden shackle that sits on top of Martin Puryear's Big Bling art sculpture at Mass MoCA in North Adams, Massachusetts. Restoration was done using 23.75 karat gold leaf.

The crane rental fee alone would have fed a whole lot of homeless. What a waste of money by a museum that doesn't even promote the city that has given them everything. Non profit my ass.

I personally think this is an eyesore, there is a group of us that think what an unsightly “elephant, roller coaster”, thing Mass Mocs is okay, but I’d rather see industry that produces and builds our town back up to a universal industrial model it once was.

it's interesting for sure, but I have to ask.. gold is a soft metal, so how long is that gold leaf going to last out in the weather? and what is it going to look like when it wears off? I'm not against the installation. just wondering what it will look like down the road...

@bonnie17177 that is a good question to ask. It will last 40-50 years out doors as long as it is handled properly. IE- no bare hands can touch it directly. The oils from our skin tarnish it and can cause it to break down if handle too much. We kept a close eye on the shackle getting installed and the crew did a great job wearing protective latex-like gloves so as to keep the piece protected for years and YEARS to come and still have its golden glow!
