Hey friend Martin! Shabbat Shalom from Israel. I am glad the bear didn’t hurt anybody. I carry a Smith & Wesson 357 magnum and a short barrel & stock Remington 12 gauge when on duty. I’ve dispatched terrorists with both. Given a choice against a bear, probably the Remington using solid slugs at the cabin. Hiking I’d carry the handgun. Stay safe!

Martin, Really like your cabin site. I'm a lifelong Minnesota resident, who's spent lots of time in the boundary waters and never seen A sprite grouse. Someday. I think by far the best video you have is the one In which you replaced the foundation on the cabin. I still can't grasp how you tied the floor in with the raised walls. Really inspirational, a person can accomplish a lot with a plan. Speaking of which. What are your plans for the new cabin? Foundation wise, and how many logs will it take?
@TheNorthwoodsman13 жыл бұрын
The floor remained on the ground when I raised the cabin as it was not affixed to the walls at all. The rocks of the foundation and new logs filled in the gap from the lifting. Boulders will be the corner stones on the new cabin.

If Mr. Bear could have chosen, he surely would have chosen you, who prevented him from causing harm and were yourself deeply unhappy about what happened. Can't remember if I mentioned this, but Faxon Atherton - founder of the California town of Atherton - was roaming around early California and bears were his greatest terror. One afternoon he had been travelling all day by horse (that was the only option besides walking at the time) from SF towards LA, and he arrived at a mission. The mission padre told him, "Thank goodness you made it! This morning we found another traveller eaten by a bear!" His diary mentions his dread of bears many times. Us urban people today just don't know enough about what's dangerous out there (I think this is why so many people get killed in places like Yosemite). If the bear didn't mean any trouble, you can exchange a bear hug in another kingdom.

Until you sell it, it’s never done. Been there and done that! Wish it had been as small as yours, too many buildings to maintain, should have avoided the lakes and run when realtor said needs TLC.

John, that is exactly why we sold the 120 acre farmette that was about 25 miles from the cabin. It was a great escape when Mart had down time from the auto factory. But after, it was more than he wanted to keep up so we sold that and still have the cabin! The wife

Vonnie's Kitchen Martin's Shack For wife and me to buy the camp, had to take the boat house and outbuildings with it, get liability insurance, and reside at -20* before purchase. 2- years non-stop work even when salmon were biting, new roof, stove pipes, stove, propane lines, lose Serval ,buy new fridge, new Windows , doors, siding,and the list went on and on.Needs TLC took on nasty meaning, took awhile to clean out 2-3000 lbs worth of stuff brought in during logging days or 20 years of living with only boat, ski plane access.No road access, for 30 years before purchase.

I walk the woods of New Hampshire where bears are more than prevalent. My dog has sent many bears up trees and many people say a dog is much more effective than a weapon or bear spray. It’s been the case for me. Maybe a suggestion for you?
@TheNorthwoodsman13 жыл бұрын
It would certainly help but I have seen friends dogs at the cabin and they do not get any sleep with all the sounds and scents in that forest. Wolves may lure them out too.

At 8:28 there's a shot of a tree thats interesting. Is that one of the northern ash that gets destroyed by some species of beetle ?🐞
@TheNorthwoodsman13 жыл бұрын
That is an apple tree at an old homestead that has been riddled by a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. It makes the hole and returns to suck out the sap that collects. Birch trees are their usual target.

@@TheNorthwoodsman1 That's so cool Martin. I'm from Arizona & the only time I ever heard of a yellow bellied sap sucker is when I was a kid & it came in the form of an insult, which were always held in high regard.😃🇺🇸🇨🇦

Anything short of a 12 gauge slug or a .44 magnum round can be very ineffective on a bear. In other words, you might just anger it.
@TheNorthwoodsman13 жыл бұрын
I agree and had used the 12 gauge on the bear. I have a 44 magnum and it is a lot less put down energy that the shotgun slug.

Martin, I sure enjoy your videos!! I'm also glad to hear your going to be carrying protection from now on, remember bears are tough animals, I'd suggest a magnum caliber...357 or .44 in a handgun...stay safe!!
@TheNorthwoodsman13 жыл бұрын
Right on, I already have the 44 magnum.

I don’t carry bear spray but I do recommend it strongly. So my opinion is suspect. I do carry concealed tho, so i’d be in your shoes too. But I have 2 big dogs that would bark & R U N ... Cause they’ve left me before.
@TheNorthwoodsman13 жыл бұрын
Though not the perfect solution I think a hearty can of spray is what I will go with.

@@TheNorthwoodsman1 Thanks, as I dream of building an off grid cabin on a 6-7 acre tract of land I own someday. All that's stopping me is money. Ha,ha. Good to hear from you, that must mean your back home in Illinois. Excitedly waiting for a new video of the Cabin, and your new project Cabin. God Bless!
