The Martin SC-13E acoustic-electric guitar introduces an entirely new body shape and neck joint to the Martin family. The unique, asymmetrical S shape balances its tone to allow for more gain and less feedback as you amplify your sound with the built-in Fishman MX-T electronics. The Sure Align neck system removes the heel, allowing unprecedented access to the highest of the SC-13E’s 20 frets, and the ergonomic low-profile velocity neck barrel delivers a comfortable playing experience meant for long nights on the stage. Sitka spruce top with Koa back and sides, ebony fingerboard, and mother-of-pearl inlays finish this modern guitar with classic Martin details. Guitarist Angela Petrilli checks out the new SC-13E and shares her first impressions.

Yeah, I wondered if they're compensating for flaws in the guitars response to softer touch? Does it sound thin or washy unplugged, does it lack sustain?

Hmm, found myself a little concerned about intonation of the guitar on this video at :23 in. Then at :45, the tight shot doesn't match the audio. (Video producer, musicians do notice these things.) That's when I bailed out and looked for other videos about this guitar. Learned that you can fairly easily change neck angle (without a re-set) and fine-tune scale. Those are features that make this worth a look.
@bobh2185
@bobh2185 4 жыл бұрын
intonation is pretty bad - again at 2:00. The pickup sounds very piezo-ish. The mic sound is nice tho - at 4:40. I love the access to upper frets. I wonder if this type construction will break in and gain sweetness over time and playing.
@Lancefrei

@@bobh2185 The difficulty in adjusting neck angle and scale length with acoustic guitars has been a problem for a long time. This would be a great solution. Looking forward to experiencing this model in person.

The Martin SC-13E currently retails for $1,600.00 at Sweetwater. Want to save at least 1,100 bucks, or more? This guitar is clearly modelled after the Yamaha APX which is one of the best selling acoustic electric guitars in history. Yamaha has been making the APX style guitar for over 33 years. You could buy a used APX500 or even a new APX600, have it professionally set up, ask them to change the saddle, bridge pins, and nut to bone, and now, you now have a stage worthy guitar that will do everything the Martin SC-13E will do. I am not saying that the Yamaha 500/600 and the Martin SC-13E are made out of the same materials, or with the same attention to detail, they are not. However, the budget APX, IF set up correctly, would totally get the job done, and you would not be afraid to take it places or worry as much about it getting damaged, or stolen. However, If having Martin on the headstock is super important to you, and you got the cash, buy the Martin, it will hold its value well.

Angela Petrilli just convinced me to buy this guitar. Not because she is drop dead gorgeous. But, she shows just what this guitar can do. Just paid off my Les Paul Classic ($2,000). And, just so you know, I am 66 years old. Been single for 21+ years. Been a lonely journey. But, I have my Harley and my Les Paul, so not too bad. Well, maybe a little. But this lovely lady just convinced me to buy this acoustic from Martin. Just hope I can learn to play as well as her.

Perhaps, but slotted headstocks are easier to break so this may be a better choice for most players that leave their guitars out . I’ve been building guitars for over 40 years and build both slotted and solid headstocks.

Every maker would have their own sound and yes, there is that certain signature Martin tone that we can immediately recognize and will only be heard thru their guitars. I played this one at my GC in Phx last week. I REALLY want to like it. Just acoustically it was OK. Would prefer the sound of a 214 dlx personally for that price. This sounds a bit too thin for me. it also doesnt come with a hard case which is a miss considering no one else is probably going to make one. Last note too, the build quality of the one that I played (just one example) didn't blow me away. The mix and match look of the woods was kind of disappointing the spruce top looked very strange to me. Maybe I'm nitpicking but I wouldnt order one. Id want to go into a store that had like 3-4 to choose from if it were me

I'm a Martin guy, but I tried it. Eh, seems like the model will fizzle out. Unless you play an x series you'll find it's not like the solid body you're used to...at least in my opinion. Rather thin sound. I suppose with today's recording technology you could record it and make ot sound fine, but mic'd up I couldn't see it being anything special for a performance that's seriously acoustic focused. At best It's a giger and a good guitar for somebody looking for a step up from one of there non solid models. Bolt on and will get ya by.

Martins necks feel like a barstool leg! I’ve had 5 in my life! Then I found Taylor’s at a tiny guitar shop! A doctor had it special ordered and put down $2000 ! But obama care crushed his practice! I visited the shop and the owner showed me the Leo kotkee signature he figured in the $2000 that was already paid and I got it for the difference! And is 20 yrs old now, perfectly aged and the neck feels like a 59 telecaster neck! So thin and the wide fingerboard! It melts into me when I play it! And so loud , in small venues I just mic my voice and it projects to the back of the room! I will give it to a young musician before I die!

Angela has always been a fine player but these newer Martin models fitted with Fishman electronics sound tinny, scratchy, and thin - more like a Taylor than a Martin. Without the Fishman it might have that famous Martin "sound" but activated it's just not there. Liked it better when Martin limited their use of electronics on so many models. Once I see that "E" attached to a Martin model number I'm turned off.

Great sounding guitar. But I am afraid I Would spend the rest of my life trying to bleach that blue color off the rossette and stain it tan or brown. Anything but that ugly Garrish blue. Seriously this is what I would try to do. Hopefully they’ll come out with one without that ugly color on it. I just googled it. It is possible to die mother of pearl but difficult. Since I like guitar sound I might buy it and tape off the mother of pearl and work the rest of my life trying to change the color and then play it. Whoever decided to put all that blue on that guitar needs to have a brain reset. It seems like it will be easier to tape off those blue lines around the outside edge and paint them anything better than ugly blue also.

For this mediocre female player, it's nice sometimes to get a woman's review because I have small hands and stature and what is comfortable for a man usually is different. Most of the reviews are done by men. There are plenty of mediocre male reviewers too. Sometimes I wonder if any of the reviewers listen to what they sound like. Yes, the strumming is very harsh with no real beat to it.

Justin Johnson played a fingerstyle cover of Tennessee Whiskey with the same Martin s13 and it is UNREAL. Prime example of why there's a "gender pay gap." hahahhaa
