Fun fact: the guy that was supposed to do that scene sitting in the back of the cab in the movie didn't show up that day or got sick?,,, Marty decided to do it and basically improved the whole thing!👍

I mean considering how much love and care he put into it, there’s a strong argument that it’s his magnum opus. It’s unlike his epic crime dramas but is an epic in its own right. Tells a story of an individual. A very personal film for Marty i’m sure.

These directors in the 70’s were wild guys. Really they’re one step away from an insane asylum. That’s what made them great directors. They were crazy artist high on drugs and booze. And we got the best decade of films ever made. Now we got guys like JJ Abrams and Jos Whedon who will accept any “notes” from the studio. They’re literally shills for the Hollywood studios. They deliver bland unoriginal movies.

Censorship being as it is, it’s frustrating, but true genius is never suppressed by restrictions, rather it thrives under the challenge. This is what I take from this video. Also don’t let Martin Scorsese drink with a gun anymore lol.

Lol it's not censorship when someone else is paying for your movie to be made. If you're self funding you can do whatever you want but if you want someone to hand you millions of dollars you have to play by their rules at least a little bit

Its true. the color of blood matters. Youll notice it in a lot of bloodier PG13 movies, the blood is almost black.

Better than not having it. Some scenes are far less impactful without it. It creates tension & despair. Without it the emotional impact of the scene isn't the same.

@MilkSteak55 Well it depends on the scene. If it's just a run of the mill fight scene then whatever, but one with emotional weight behind it? Then it becomes far more important. It's there to show just what the character is going through. Blood has an emotional weight to it.

There is no murdering part... The story is apparently Martin Scorcese was drinking with a gun "plotting" to kill an executive, but somehow he has his peers come over and talk him out of it and somehow he comes up with the rating. Seems just like a whacky legend but it's probably rooted in truth. I'm sure Marty was drinking with a gun talking shit that night

That’s the funniest part about it. We will never truly know. Scorsese will never confirm or deny it. On one hand it could be a story made up to create more aura and lore around the film thus bringing more attention. But on the other hand, Scorsese at this time was an impassioned artist in the 70s going through a severe cocaine addiction…anything is possible. But no matter what you believe, we’ll never truly know

Yeah for sure but I think even though it hits a stronger audience, because the bulk numbers aren't there they don't go for that rating. Also as I understood it X meant sexual, at least in Australia, and R is the highest the ratings go
