People need to stop crying about this guys opinion. What he’s saying is 100% true. Yes, Marvel movies are cinema but they more so fit into the amusement park category. He isnt saying that’s necessarily bad either. Just compare Taxi Driver to Doctor Strange or something like that, 2 very different films, one allows you to shut your brain off for 2 hours, the other one challenges you for 2 hours. I think Scorsese’s point is completely fair.

Reading Percy jackson is entertaining,... then... next, I'll read another one, then another, then another. Not a big deal. Some suggestions to points above: Netflix was the only studio willing to back this movie. Also, filmgoers should read up on monopoly power in movie theater chains and the film industry. You can't break through to audiences today unless you are a comic book movie. Theater chains prioritize the opening weekend. Not because we prefer comic books over others, its that most theaters have no [financial] incentive to show them. They make quicker bucks on opening weekend vs let's say an original property in the 80s like Back to the Future which took like 2 months floating in theaters before it took off word of mouth. The studios, in turn, respond to this by making movies that can break through, hit that opening weekend total which is a sign in our culture now of a "good movie." They're bet is on "brand" movies. Do you see Marty's beef here? Weird original daring movies dont stand a chance, not like the 70s were studios gave more leeway to the new generation of filmmakers to experiment and fill theaters. It wasnt all great but looking back now it was a gold rush of classic cinema. Audiences today dont have those options. We are shaped to like what's there, because the gatekeepers decide what's there, and the gatekeepers now are not film buffs or snobs like Scorcese but CEOs in corporate monopolies.

That’s all Pirates was, but it also had a first entry that still stands as one of my favorite adventure films of all time. But yeah, Jungle Cruise doesn’t have Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Kiera Knightly, Or Geoffrey Rush, and The Rock doesn’t exactly bring that acting caliber. Emily Blunt definitely has that kind of talent, but from the trailer, Jungle Cruise doesn’t seem to be featuring it.

I do get his point, and I did think that element took away from the Joker experience. Because when watching Joker you think there is no way this ends well for Arthut. In ANY other movie, he would've died at the end. Maybe as a "hero", maybe as an icon, but he would've died. But... while watching Joker I had in the back of my head that... well... this has to end with him somehow turning in the clown prince of crime, the apparently immortal enemy of the Batman who is still at the very least 10 15 years away from even existing. So... yeah. I do understand his point about having a fantastical script about an amazing character that ultimately has to turn into a comic book character. I get it.

The film makers need the theatres. Very well said, he don't want the theatres to be annexed by the big studios so they just become theme park rides. People misunderstood everything he said about this topic.

I agree, Marty. The Joker movie is different from a superhero movie. Despite it being an origin story, it mostly focuses on Arthur Fleck. It’s about the person himself before he plunges into the abstraction. The challenge, now, is for the sequel to come off less as a superhero/supervillain movie and continue as a character study/narrative. It can happen. It just needs to deliver a really significant narrative on the human himself and the society he deals with.

If you made Taxi Driver you dont gain anything from making The Joker. If he could have told the story in a more creative way, he probably would have done it. But youre talking about a character the whole world knows and had an opinion on and then its just so damn dark. I dont think he wanted to revisit that sort of story especially since every other day we get to see the story on the news "crazy, disturbed, misunderstood, bored person walks into a school, church, mall, store with a weapon and empties it."

Theme park ride is a good term for those movies. Remove the special effects and what are you left with, men in tights with bad puns.

Honestly comic book movies are huge cause the guys in charge of studios were young during the comics boom of the 90s. Shit if I was a Hollywood big shot, I’d damn sure try to adapt the comics of my youth. Those were my fables as a kid.
