A friend of mine was working on the property next door to Kate Hepburn. He saw her climbing a tree to prune some branches. She was in her mid 80's at the time. He called out, "Be careful Kate, you're an American treasure." She yelled back, "Mind your own business, young man!" A Hepburn classic that's not been heard until now!

I know people admire Hepburn's acting skills and all that, but I've understood the praise she got for her rude behaviour. All this nonsense about her being "real" or "remarkable" or "she told it like it was" is very frustrating to read. I know she had good points, but when she felt like it she could be arrogant and rude. There's nothing praiseworthy about any of that. I guess I can look forward to accusations of jealousy or whatever. It's the same with Bette Davis. People had to make excuses for what was essentially difficult behaviour that you wouldn't put up with from a famous person.

When you’re fond of someone (if it’s a relative or an old friend) or you admire them a great deal (as is the case here), transgressions of that kind are easier to forgive. When that person occasionally has things to say few others would dare that are worth hearing, you could even grow to enjoy the delivery, including while on the receiving end. Now, with KH and BD there’s something else going on as well. They were being arrogant & in your face at a time when only men got to do that and get away with it. It took guts for female celebrities with that kind of personality not to choose to censor themselves all the time to avoid the consequences (which BD and KH both did suffer, BD especially). That’s what fans are praising here. Many non-fans too, precisely because they are aware of the social pioneering women like them were doing, whether they meant to or not.

helllooooo, you there, "challenging old hollywood"! thank you. so many people just jump on the "ooooh" and "ahhhhh" "oh, looky there, it's a celebrity" bandwagon and applaud their immorality, rudeness, coarse behavior, and so on. and why? because they are brainless and immoral themselves. example, have you ever seen the View? the applauding seals in the audience responding to the sign flashing on, "laugh now" or "applause here" to the audience. just brainless, clapping seals. no discernment, no life. those who know, know. bette davis left her legacy, it's in her daughter's hurt. katherine hepburn left hers, known for sleeping with a married man who felt tremendous guilt because he had kids and yet still cheated, and it's all public knowledge. so, no morals? is this so brave? is rudeness a quality we admire now? it's their arrogance, people. theirs is a false superiority. I know lots of narcissists like this. the theme of their life is, "It's all about me, excuse me, get out of my way, I'M the ONE WHO IS IMPORTANT HERE!" If they've said (or done) something even slightly quirky or disagreeable - they become offensive people in an instant. Many folks draw conclusions from reading just the 'headlines' but not the story. Someone's phone camera can snap a picture and incite a riot. In this example, Short describes the uncomfortable outcome of a meeting with a diva. Short's remark should have been received as complimentary to her talent and career. It was humorous, but she took it as a sort of insult..probably hurt her ego in some way.

I took it that she had just hoped to remain anonymous - but maybe he was being "too familiar".

She won them by acting and being liked by the voters. Not just 4 but almost 50 years apart between the first and the last. Wouldn’t happen today with all the diversity inclusion crap they’re imposing.

@Hudpix16 Жыл бұрын
They were both great, however Kate aged better acting wise, she was still getting good roles in her 60s whereas Bette was relegated to B movies and supporting roles by this time. I admire in Bette that she was more diverse in her roles but towards the end she almost made anything they offered her because she needed the money. Also Kate was and still is the only actor to have won 4 Oscars which cemented her status as a legend.
