Taylor 717 V-Class definitely has more sustain and good clarity, but sometimes a bit too much treble and very dominant upper midrange. Martin D28 has enough sustain, but maintains a warmer, rounder tone with a little less midrange and a pleasing amount of bass with beautiful treble notes. I think ears that prefer the Taylor sound will like the 717 and ears that prefer the Martin sound will still prefer the D28! Great comparison, Jarvis!

Bob Burnett great assessment BOB .. what you said is sensible

The Taylor is brittle and thin in this comparison. It cuts through but lacks body, to my taste.

for my ears, its the d28. The taylor was really screaming but just to much treble; The d28 just sounds so so much better.

I have to say the Taylor sounds better than the Martin and I have heard other demos as well as this great channel. Hard to beat Taylor these days. Bro what about the HD28 though? Is it similar to the D28 in comparison with the 717e builders? If so then for sure I’m going to get the 717e. It’s not that the Martin doesn’t sound great too I just like the boom of the Taylor. It’s such a tough call to spend my money on. I gotta get it right for 3000 bucks. Thoughts?

Martins are an old man guitar plain and simple

I own both, a Custom Shop Martin D28 VTS top and Taylor 717. The Martin is hard to beat, such a recognizable sound on countless recordings. Playability, the Taylor feels like a warm conversation with an old, comfortable, trustworthy friend. Loud, proud and has mountains of Dobro sounding midrange with sweet highs. I run both with mediums though where I think the player here uses lights I heard in another vid. I didn’t think Taylor would ever dip over into the Martin/Gibson water but they have and have knocked it out of the park and did it without copying the bracing or cosmetics (well it is a slope shoulder J45 with a tighter waist)

Individual players will adjust well to either one of these amazing instruments and bring out the music they want to hear.

I actually played the same Taylor guitar at Swee Lee (Star Vista) last month and love its 'modern' tone although I'm not sure whether V bracing is better than X. I have long been a Martin fan as I grew up with country and western music. Guess it comes down to the type of music you embrace. Try playing Stairway to Heaven on the Taylor. Sounds good, too.

Alan Au Yong so you got the Rainsong .. congrats

Alan Au Yong probably Cox the 717 was stiff due to mediums on her plus the guitar saddle needs to be corrected and radius to 14 inches plus lower the saddle and then the playability would be like butter

Taylor definitely has the edge on sustain! as a feedback, could, appreciate a cleaner backdrop, maybe try heavier curtains so it doesnt sway.

Taylors are always way too bright and glossy for my liking. However, like the color of this Taylor with the matt finish. Still favor Martin.

I played a 717 BE just before the pandemic started and loved the sound of it. About two years ago I went shopping for a guitar to start learning finger picking. I had an open mind for brands, but wanted short scale anyway, because a dreadnought was to big for me and caused a numb feeling in my arms and hands, after playing a while due to blood circulation partly cut off at the edge of the guitar body. I spend about 3 hours in the store, before making a decision. For me the difference between the Martin and Taylors I tried, was that the Martins where way more boomy in sound as the Taylors at the first 3 frets and I liked it better as the Taylors in that region of the neck. Between fret 3 and 5 soundwise it was a draw for me. Not that they are equal, but that they both had in this regions sound of my liking. From fret 7 the Martins lost it for me, the Taylors had way more accurate, lively tones with more sustain. When playing finger style Taylor sounded the best, so I went for Taylor. With the 717 I hoped getting a bit closer to the first 3 frets on a Martin, in which they succeeded. Also there is now less chance on getting numb hands because of the rounded edges. I tried quite a few Taylors and from the ones I tried with rosewood body material, I like this one and the 9 series the most. My ideal guitar would have the sound quality of Martin at the first 3 - 5 frets and Taylor sound, sustain and intonation at the remaining frets.

Martin d28 is nothing more than an expensive piece of firewood 🪵 uncomfortable neck with their specialty neck reset after only owning it for 3 years , the Taylor 717 runs circles around it.
