These two amazing ladies really owned the AO for some time, scoring amazing records : Seles 33 wins streak (4 titles without a loss), and Hingis 6 finals (3 titles without a loss followed by 3 finals). Both records are ridiculous ! The tennis quality in this match is so rare and great to watch. Seles is a bit like Nadal with her never-give-up on-court mentality, and Hingis is like a Federer with her perfect touch. It's WTA golden era in a match.

@elbouiss4 жыл бұрын
@John David We are talking about legends. We can face each legend with another's record, none should pale at all ! I mean look at Graf's Golden Slam, where to find that. Seles 4 AO in 4 successive participations, including the stabbing in between, where else. To each their crown and their kingdom. No doubt the reign of Seles was short due to unfortunate events. But now all this is history. And I believe that Navratilova had the best touch ever, only second to Hingis. And I might be wrong :-) this is strictly an opinion. But again, look at all the records you cited, with or without Hingis, these records still stand as amazingly. And with or without Navratilova, Hingis, in another super short career has her own all-time records, still unbroken til today. Respect to each for all they could achieve. But what they achieved most : highest level in women sports entertainment in times when caring to watch ladies sports is not the top interest worldwide. These women are amazing and none can pale the other, except in our heart (and that's fully legitimate).

@Elias B. -- The quality of the match is as good as the pleasure of watching it. But I would rather compare Monica with the tough, strong, determined and unwavering Novak Djokovic, and not with Nadal, although he, like many, can serve as a good comparison. If it weren't for the act of psychopath Gunter Parche, Monica would probably be the best for many years to come. Unfortunately, she never recovered mentally, she remained trapped with fear, and in life with paranoia, which definitely affected her game in the future. Maestro Monica, in those years, had a great competition with a lot of amazingly good girls. Really big, big loss for women's tennis. I love Monica very much, like most fans from Serbia, but what she shouldn't have done, and she did, is give up her Serbian citizenship because of the American one. She should have proudly kept him like Djokovic, who as a Serb has no obstacles to play and become the No. 1 in the world. At a time when only the bad was talked about in Serbia and all the good from the past was suddenly forgotten, Monica, like most of our athletes of Serbian citizenship, should have been another one of the few who represented us to the world in a beautiful light. It is certain that Monica would have some problems like Djokovic and others from Serbia. She should have endured all that and proudly stood behind her and the flag of her country, and in that way she would stand behind her people, and in that way represent them nicely in the world. The country in which she was born and in which she lived - magnificent SERBIA. It is the Serbian tennis school! Lots of good players, and lots of young hopes for the future of tennis. And if I were to talk about our region or the countries of the former Yugoslavia, then I could say that we have now, and that in the future we will have the best tennis players in the world from our wider region. The best of the best !!! All in all, this was a great match for great girls.

@Ilya Kuryakin It's my opinion ... that Seles would have been much better had it not been for the stabbing, and also that her father's death contributed to her worse game ... Steffi is also a fantastic player. Then the best. I love watching her play. I didn’t hate Steffi, quite the opposite - I love watching her matches. AND, I'm not even a big fan of Monica. Seles struggled more with Davenport, in all their matches. The former flaws are too obvious for anyone. The genius in Martina shows in the beauty of the execution of such tactic. @@elbouiss I don't subscribe to ESPN or Tennis Channel because I would waste precious hours watching sports. Which is why I don't qualify as a tennis geek. I was an Edberg and Rafter fan until Agassi and Sampras chased them out of the game (or at least chased them down the ranks). So then I was mesmerized by these two. I was really disappointed to see the Seles career end so abruptly, as I was of the impression that her maturity along with her incredible shot making would give her a chance at Grand Slam records. Nowadays I look for matches that include all court players: Serena, Barty, and a very few others. I don't know what happened to Andreescu, but she has that ability. Federer of course, Rafa is not all court but quickly recognizes when he should be at the net. Shapovalov has the tools for all court but guess we'll have to wait on that one. Best shot maker Federer. Don't know anyone else who can hit half volley winners from the base line. Best mental game ever, that's not so clear: Conners, Lendl... this I believe though, when Djokovic is on the court the pressure is always on his opponent no matter what the game or set scores are. Most memorable match: The one where Novotna choked the Wimbledon match away to Graf. Sorry if I loaded my own questions, but we all view it in our own way. Stay safe mate.

Other athletes in tennis, and other sports, have had other serious injuries and surgeries, and trauma, and recovered to go on winning. The stabbing is the lamest excuse.
@ileanasantamaria23645 жыл бұрын
@@markuse3472 The actual stab wound (not "cut") is one thing, and surely the part that healed the fastest, as would be the case in a mental game like tennis. The psychological repercussions of a violent attack on one's life by a deranged fan of Steffi's while on court, unawares, on the other hand, is NOT an ordinary sort of athletic hardship, and certainly not one about which it would even be possible to hypothesize how others would have coped with it. Unless you plan to go around stabbing tennis players to have a basis for comparison. It's just a cut, right? For one who has such disdain for Seles, you sure spend a lot of time on several of her videos, disabusing her fans of what you deem erroneous notions, in what is a fairly transparent bid to defend Steffi's post-stabbing legacy against the Gunther Parche asterisk. Markus and the German justice system, which did not force the deranged fan to spend a single night in prison, apparently take such incidents lightly. All for the greater glory of Steffi.

Her problem wasn’t the mental game, it was lack of power. She couldn’t handle the power of players like the Williams sisters, Davenport, Capriati, and later Henin and Clijsters. Hingis was so beautiful this is so enjoyable to watch in so many aspects, Seles the relentless hard hitting girl (who owned Graaf by the way) vs the beautiful fluid Hingis, that last game was so crucial I think Seles faulted in concentration and martina was so nervous that I´m pretty sure if she had lost that game she would have lost the match.
@MrCappon11114 жыл бұрын
@Illya Kuryakin she beat Graaf when it counted, and any game after the stabbing does not count (Seles was trying so hard, staying in Court was a triumph) by the way the stabbing was done by a white Nazi supremacist that couldn't stand Graaf loosing to Seles . Do you remember?

True that. I would like to see some comparative stats on TV ratings, ticket sales, tour revenue, etc. The era of Graf, Seles, Hingis, Davenport, Capriati, not to mention the Williams sisters. Does anyone really care about womens tennis these days?

Seles would have never missed some of these shots in her prime, before she was stabbed. After that incident she never played with the same intensity as she had in the past. She was the most intense female competitor I've ever seen. Hingis played very good here, and deserved to win, as Monica was missing shots, she would generally make. I believe Monica said in her book, that after the incident she had trouble keeping her weight down, and it showed in this match.

Seles completely folded early in the 3rd set and never recovered. You can’t come back against a player like Hingis unless you really turn up the heat, reduce your unforced errors, and take the match away from your opponent.

I enjoy watching the 1990's tennis players more than those after 2000 overall. Steffi, Hingis, Seles, Capriati, Sanchez, and more, and the men, too. Awesome decade. For me, Steffi is the best of all, to date, and I have my reasonable factors to those who say Serena is. Its all good, I just believe after all said and done, Graf is the GOAT.
@ninjaboy685 жыл бұрын
Graf's record only succeeded in making her "GOAT" officially because her biggest fan got rid of the girl that was usurping her! Seles had her measure and Parche knew it. Graf's backhand in particular is excruciating to watch. Awful.....

@@ninjaboy68 Steffi's biggest fan(s) are all those but that criminal, but I see stupidity is your strength and forte so pet yourself on the back. Steffi beat your Seles more times prior to the paper cut, and after it. Steffi was dominating. After that toe-nail clipper cut, Seles still won One more slam and various tourney titles so she still had it. But as with many athletes from all sports, some are Good for a few years only--It Happens To Many and Seles was no exception. More so, the other players figured Seles out: her Always two-handing everything. They targeted it. It was Seles's doing not anyone elses. Steffi's backhand had spin and many times went low, and that made her competition go lower to return it and it helped Steffi set up her returns. But as I've said, pop culture (stupidity) is your forte so I forgive your inability to think.
