Saw her playing at a European junior tournament in Chur (Switzerland) in 1990 or 1991. She was 11 years old at most. Her two significantly older, taller, physically stronger opponents on that Saturday may have managed to score a game or so. If I had to describe how she played, my attempt would fail before I even said one word. There are certain things in life one cannot describe.

"during her time"? after her loss to Graf at the Roland Garros 1999 final, Hingis NEVER again won a grand slam...
@alexpiper1115 Жыл бұрын
@@anthonydecastro6938 well yeah but she still won enough tournaments to retain the number 1 ranking for a while. this tournament really solidified her decline. she played well against Venus in the next round and was the heavy favorite to win against Jennifer but she had other plans. After this, the big babes( Jennifer, Venus, Serena, Lindsay) we're beating her pretty regularly. Everyone in the comments was praising Martina but this was really Serena's match to lose - She lost a lot of matches that she should have won in 2001 and trained hard in the off season to start winning again.

But temember that Serena W was far from the form of her dominant self. She was making lots of unforced errors. The serve was not as good yet. Hingis had the game but just not enough power to deal with the bigger stronger rivals that came after her.

True. The 00s are the best era for women tennis. Williams Sisters, Hingis, Henin, Davenport, Capriati, Clijsters, Sharapova, Mauresmo. So many multiple grand slam champions. And so many top players with different playing styles. These days everything is about power. Which is still ok if they can reduce the unforced errors. But when all players go for broke too many times it creates too many unforced errors, and creates inconsistencies. Not many players can play the power game the way that williams sisters and sharapova does. I think the younger generations player needs to hold back some of their shots and not go for broke all the time.

The fluidity of Hingis's game combined with an ultra-competitiveness clearly separated her in terms of appeal from the other female players of that era. You recognize the correlation between youth, injuries and going on tour. This is why Mr. Williams limited his girls junior touring schedule. He was called all kinds of disrespectful name for this by the USTA people and media people. In hindsight, he looks like a genius for his vision and guidance for the Williams sisters. And, as he foretold, they had long successful tennis careers. They have been conscious international embassadors of tennis and inspired millions to play. Currently, Serena is two major wins away from being the number 1 all time major tournament winner in tennis. Venus has been magnificent and has significant multitudes of tournament wins. When Venus casted a shadow over her sister in the early days, Mr. Williams said the younger Serena would be better in the future. Now, we see what he talked about decades ago.

One of the greatest matches of all time, the level was just unreal and the atmosphere is crackling. It's a bit like that US Open match of Henin vs Capriati, where you can rewatch it and instantly feel the excitement of the crowd and the occasion. Some of the shots that both players came up with were inspirational. True talent on display and they both fought to the end.

Serena is so quiet in this match....I wish she played more like this. Amazing tennis. Martina was tougher mentally in this match.

And Serena was never a graceful loser against other players. Admittedly, she's one of the greatest players of all time, but never liked her entitled attitude.

I always loved the Hingis style. The compact, efficient strokes, the angles, the strategy and the sometimes arrogant, brattish behaviour.

That was great to watch. It's easy to forget that Williams used to be so trim back in the day. Hingis, by comparison, has barely changed in appearance.

One of my favorite all time matches. The Australian Open might be the most neutral surface for both Hingis and Serena. Hingis truly won this match. Serena did not lose this match, Hingis had to win it.

I believe they played 23 times, Hingis winning 12 - and this was their most competitive and best match. Hingis probably one of the most intelligent champions of all time. She played tennis like a chess match, anticipating shot placement well in advance against much stronger players. Her mother coached her with this “no unforced errors” mentality , so that she gave away very few free points. Add that to mental toughness at 1-4 down in the third set, and it’s easy to see how she maintained the number one ranking for so long in one of the toughest eras in women’s tennis. Besides the Williams sisters, Hingis had to contend with Graf, Seles, Davenport, Capriati, et al. Without those ankle injuries, would have been interesting to see how much longer her singles career might have been.
@christianWilliams-pc4jn2 жыл бұрын
Yeah Hingis is definitely a legend to be able to even compete with the likes of Davenport the William sisters etc. With no overwhelming power weapon was remarkable. It was like you said her anticipation her tremendous footwork, taking the ball early and redirecting it. But make no mistake Serena is the greatest of all time.

Classic Hingis, after she demolishes Venus. Too bad for Women's Tennis Hingis got injured. This would've been such a great rivalry. Hingis has superior striking ability, shot placement, pace control, diversity of game, she just lacked power.

LadyMaryNW45 Yeah, most players even hard hitters were very cautious when dealing with Martina Hingis. She was striking the ball early on the rise, top spin shots and those skillful half volleys were her weapons to compensate for the lack of power.
@aaron19835 жыл бұрын
@@mountainblanc3200 She really formed the foundation for the new players now. They are able to incorporate all which Hingis innovated into their power games, even deadlier now!
@troyhaskins38635 жыл бұрын
@@aaron1983 she never had a power game. She couldn't hang with the heavy hitters. She was good for her time but her game was too weak for what was coming. The William's sisters Shsrapova, Justine Anna Harden. Too strong for her weak game. Not to mention her serve was like 20mph slower. She rarely hit 95-100

Looking at the head2head Hingis “blew” the Williams 6-0 and won easily more often than they could win Hingis easily. Grand slam head2head Hingis actually leads 5-3 against Williams sisters. Overall 11-10 & 6-7 even. 2-2 in doubles. Similar age: One won with mature brain and game in prodigy term; the other with power. Last laugh had Hingis 2006 winning Venus and Lindsay.
